Calm

Chapter 8: The Warehouse

I didn't go to the warehouse alone.

Claire knew someone in law enforcement who could help us document the threats, but we needed evidence strong enough to connect Daniel to the financial scheme.

I gave the authorities every message.

Every photograph.

Every bank record.

Every detail Vanessa remembered.

Then I went anyway.

Because Mom's life wasn't something I could gamble with.

The warehouse stood at the edge of an abandoned industrial district.

I arrived carrying an empty briefcase.

Daniel was waiting.

He was older than I expected.

Late forties.

Gray at his temples.

A scar across one eyebrow.

He looked at me with unsettling calm.

“You look like him.””

“My father?””

He smiled.

“He never told you about me.””

“No.””

“He was ashamed.””

“That isn't my problem.””

“It becomes your problem when you inherit his secrets.””

He stepped closer.

“Where are the documents?””

“I don't have them.””

“You're lying.””

“No.””

He studied me.

Then he smiled.

“Your mother does.””

“She doesn't.””

“She does.””

He pulled out a folder.

Inside were copies of old legal documents.

My father's signature.

A trust agreement.

And something else.

A letter.

I recognized the handwriting.

My father's.

Daniel noticed my reaction.

“He wrote to me before he died.””

I opened the letter.

It was brief.

My father acknowledged Daniel as his son.

He also said the trust would remain under my mother's control.

Daniel had been cut out.

His anger was obvious.

“I deserved that money.””

I looked at him.

“You've spent years trying to destroy us for money?””

“I spent years being erased.””

“That isn't an excuse.””

“It is to me.””

He pulled out his phone.

“This is where you decide.””

The screen showed Mom.

She was sitting in a chair.

Alive.

Terrified.

I felt my blood freeze.

“Let her go.””

“Give me the original trust documents.””

“I don't have them.””

“Then she'll suffer.””

I took one step forward.

“You're done.””

He laughed.

“Am I?””

Sirens sounded in the distance.

His face changed.

For one second, fear flashed across it.

Then he grabbed my arm.

“Where did you put them?””

I fought back.

The briefcase fell.

The folder hit the floor.

Daniel lunged toward me.

Then the warehouse doors burst open.

Officers rushed inside.

Daniel froze.

They arrested him before he could reach the exit.

Mom was found safely in the back office of an adjoining building where one of his accomplices had left her.

I ran to her.

She grabbed me.

“Oh, Marcus.””

I held her like I was a child again.

“I'm here.””

She sobbed into my shoulder.

“You came.””

“Always.””

Vanessa arrived minutes later.

Mom looked at her.

Neither spoke.

Then Mom said softly, “You need help too.””

Vanessa burst into tears.

“I know.””

For once, there was no argument.

May you like

No defense.

Just truth.
