Chapter 3: The Secret Behind My Father's Name
I stared at Vanessa's face.
“The person who sent you those pictures isn't trying to destroy our marriage.””
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“They're trying to get something your mother has.””
For a second, the only sound in the house was the hum of the refrigerator.
Then my phone slipped slightly in my hand.
“What does my mother have?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway again.
“I don't know.””
“Then why are you acting like you do?””
“Because the investigator found something.””
“You said they found my mother.””
“They found records.””
“What records?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know all of it.””
“That isn't good enough.””
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“No. You listen to me.””
I stepped closer.
“You've spent weeks watching me, hiding money, lying to your friends, and investigating my family behind my back. Now you're telling me somebody wants something from my mother, and somehow you still think I should be patient?””
She started crying again.
“I was scared.””
“So am I.””
That shut her up.
I glanced toward the hallway.
Mom's bedroom door remained closed.
I lowered my voice.
“I'm asking her.””
Vanessa grabbed my arm again.
“Please don't.””
I pulled away.
“You don't get to decide what I know about my own family.””
“I do if I know what will happen.””
“What will happen?””
Vanessa stared at me.
“They'll come back.””
“Who?””
“I don't know!””
Her voice broke.
“They called me three times.””
I stopped.
“When?””
“Before the party.””
“What did they say?””
“They told me to leave your mother alone.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Your mother?”” Vanessa said.
“No. They said the old woman at the house.””
A chill ran across my skin.
“And you didn't tell me?””
“I thought it was a bluff.””
“Until when?””
“Until yesterday.””
“What happened yesterday?””
She looked down at her phone.
“I got a photograph.””
“What kind?””
“My mother-in-law standing outside the pharmacy.””
I frowned.
“That isn't unusual.””
“The picture was taken from across the street.””
She hesitated.
“There was a note under it.””
“What did it say?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She knows where it is.”
I looked at the hallway again.
For the first time, I wasn't thinking about the dishes.
I wasn't thinking about the party.
I wasn't even thinking about the six hundred dollars.
I was thinking about my mother sitting alone upstairs, completely unaware that somebody might be watching her.
I walked toward the stairs.
Vanessa followed.
“Marcus, please.””
I stopped on the first step.
“If you know something else, tell me now.””
“I don't.””
“You're lying.””
“I swear I'm not.””
I looked at her for a long moment.
Then I climbed the stairs.
Mom's door was slightly open.
I knocked.
“Mom?””
No answer.
I pushed the door inward.
Her room was dark except for the lamp beside the bed.
The bed was empty.
My heart jumped.
“Mom?””
I checked the bathroom.
Empty.
Closet.
Empty.
Then I heard a sound downstairs.
The front door.
I ran.
“Mom!””
She stood in the entryway holding her purse.
“I was just getting some air.””
I rushed toward her.
“Where were you?””
She looked surprised.
“At the mailbox.””
“You scared me.””
“I didn't realize.””
She looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“What happened?””
I stared at her.
“Mom, we need to talk.””
Her expression changed.
“About what?””
“Dad.””
The purse slipped slightly from her hand.
“What about your father?””
I took a breath.
“Did he leave something behind?””
Mom went very still.
Vanessa looked at the floor.
That reaction told me more than words could.
“Yes,” Mom said.
I swallowed.
“What?””
She slowly walked toward the living room.
“Sit down.””
I remained standing.
“What did he leave?””
Mom lowered herself onto the armchair.
Her hands folded in her lap.
“Your father left money.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“How much?””
“I don't know what it would be worth now.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
Mom looked at me.
“He put it in a trust.””
I remembered Vanessa's words.
A trust.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because it wasn't supposed to matter.””
“Clearly it matters.””
Mom sighed.
“Your father made mistakes.””
“Everyone makes mistakes.””
“No.””
Her eyes turned glassy.
“Your father made decisions that hurt people.””
I looked toward Vanessa.
“What people?””
Mom was silent.
“Mom.””
She looked down.
“Your father had another child.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I had spent my entire life believing I was an only child.
My father had never mentioned a son.
My mother had never mentioned one.
Now both of them were standing in the same house with a secret that had apparently existed before I was born.
“Who?””
Mom's voice was barely audible.
“Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“Daniel who?””
“Daniel Carter.””
The name meant nothing to me.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“That's the name I saw in the documents.””
Mom's head snapped toward her.
“You saw them?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Who gave them to you?””
Mom's face tightened.
“Who?””
Vanessa whispered, “A man.””
“Daniel?””
“I don't know.””
Mom stood so quickly I thought she might fall.
I caught her elbow.
“Sit down.””
She did.
Her breathing became uneven.
I crouched in front of her.
“Mom, look at me.””
She did.
“Is Daniel alive?””
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
“I don't know.””
“When did you last see him?””
“Years ago.””
“How many?””
“Twenty-three.””
I stared at her.
“Twenty-three years?””
Mom nodded.
“He came to the house.””
“What did he want?””
“The trust.””
“Did you give it to him?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because your father had made the decision before he died.””
“What decision?””
Mom closed her eyes.
“He left you the controlling interest.””
I couldn't speak.
“Why?””
“Because he believed Daniel would spend everything.””
“Did he say that?””
“He wrote it.””
“Where is that letter?””
Mom looked toward the fireplace.
“Gone.””
“Gone how?””
“I burned it.””
My anger surged.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel came looking for it.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Marcus…”
I held up my hand.
I needed Mom to keep talking.
“What happened when Daniel came?””
Mom stared into the distance.
“He was angry.””
“Did he threaten you?””
“He said he would never forgive your father.””
“That's it?””
“He said he knew about the house.””
“What house?””
“This house.””
I looked around.
The same walls I had grown up visiting.
The same hallway.
The same kitchen.
The same house where my father had died.
“Why would the house matter?””
“Because the trust was tied to it.””
My mind raced.
“So the house isn't just Mom's.””
“No.””
“Then whose is it?””
“Yours.””
I blinked.
“Mine?””
Mom nodded.
“When your father died, the house was transferred into the trust.””
“And Daniel wants it.””
“Yes.””
The pieces were starting to fit.
The money.
The photographs.
Vanessa's fear.
The investigator.
Someone wanted control.
Someone had discovered a family secret and decided to use my marriage to get what they wanted.
But one question remained.
“Why Vanessa?””
Mom looked at her.
Vanessa began crying.
“I didn't know.””
Mom's expression softened.
“You know now.””
“What does she have to do with Daniel?””
Mom shook her head.
“That's what worries me.””
I stood.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel wasn't working alone the first time.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa looked up sharply.
“Who else?””
Mom's eyes met mine.
“I never knew his name.””
“But you knew there was someone else.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“He called himself Mr. Gray.””
The name sent a strange shiver down my spine.
Vanessa stared at Mom.
“That name…”
“What?””
“I've heard it.””
“Where?””
“At the investigator's office.””
I turned to her.
“What are you talking about?””
“The receptionist mentioned it.””
“When?””
“After I paid them.””
“What did she say?””
“She said, Mr. Gray already paid for the file.”
I stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I didn't know what it meant.””
Mom's hand began trembling.
“Vanessa,” she whispered.
“Yes?””
“Did he ever contact you directly?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
I turned toward her.
“Did he?””
She looked at me.
Then she slowly nodded.
“Once.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“When?””
“Three days ago.””
“What did he say?””
“He said he knew where I lived.””
“That's all?””
“No.””
She looked terrified.
“He said you would never believe me.””
“Believe you about what?””
She swallowed.
“He said he had proof that your father wasn't the man you thought he was.””
Mom gasped.
I turned to her.
“What does that mean?””
She stood.
“Nothing.””
“Mom.””
“Nothing.””
“What did he know about Dad?””
She shook her head.
“You need to stop.””
“Why?””
“Because some truths destroy more than lies.””
I stared at her.
“I'm done being protected.””
Mom looked at me, and tears filled her eyes.
“I was afraid this day would come.””
“What day?””
“The day you would start asking questions.””
“Then answer them.””
She took a trembling breath.
“Your father didn't die owing money.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
“Everything.””
She walked toward the fireplace.
Behind an old framed photograph was a small brass key.
She took it down.
I stared at it.
“What is that?””
“The key to the safe.””
“What safe?””
Mom looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“The one your father told me never to open unless Daniel came back.””
I felt my pulse hammering.
“Where is the safe?””
She pointed toward the hallway.
“Behind the wall in your father's study.””
My eyes widened.
“The study?””
“That room hasn't been touched since he died.””
I remembered that room.
I remembered my father's desk.
His old books.
His locked drawers.
The clock that had stopped at 2:17 the night he died.
I had always assumed Mom kept it untouched because she couldn't bear changing anything.
Now I wondered whether she had been guarding something.
I moved toward the study.
Vanessa followed.
Mom called after us.
“Marcus.””
I stopped.
“Whatever you find…”
She hesitated.
“Do not trust the first version of the story.””
I turned.
“What does that mean?””
Mom's face had gone pale.
“It means your father had secrets.””
I opened the study door.
Dust covered nearly every surface.
The room smelled like old paper and cedar.
I walked toward the bookshelf.
“Where?””
Mom entered slowly.
She pointed toward the far wall.
“Behind the painting.””
I pulled the painting down.
Nothing.
I moved my fingers along the wall.
Then I found it.
A narrow seam.
A hidden compartment.
My heart started racing.
I pressed the edge.
A panel clicked.
Vanessa gasped.
Inside was a small steel safe.
I looked at Mom.
“Why didn't you ever open it?””
“Because your father made me promise.””
“You had the key all these years.””
“Yes.””
“And you never looked inside.””
“No.””
I inserted the key.
It turned.
The safe opened.
Inside was a stack of documents tied with black string.
A passport.
Several bank statements.
An old photograph.
And a sealed envelope.
My name was written across it.
*Marcus.*
My hands went numb.
I picked it up.
“Mom…”
She said nothing.
I broke the seal.
The first line was written in my father's unmistakable handwriting.
If you are reading this, Daniel has found you.
I stopped.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
I continued.
There is something I never told your mother.
My eyes moved to the next line.
Daniel is not the danger.
I looked up.
Mom's face had gone completely white.
And beneath my father's words was one final sentence.
The person you should fear is the one standing beside you.
I slowly turned toward Vanessa.
She was staring at me.
Neither of us spoke.
May you like
Then, from downstairs, we heard the sound of the front door opening.
Someone had just entered the house.
