Chapter 4: The Person Standing Beside Me
The sound of the front door closing echoed through the house.
I froze.
Vanessa froze too.
My mother stood behind us, gripping the brass key so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
For three seconds, nobody breathed.
Then came the sound of footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
One step.
Then another.
I closed the safe immediately.
“Mom,” I whispered, “stay here.””
She shook her head.
“Marcus, no.””
“Stay here.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at the study door.
“Who is it?”” she whispered.
“I don't know.””
The footsteps stopped downstairs.
A floorboard creaked.
Then another.
Someone was coming up.
My eyes searched the room.
There was no weapon.
Nothing useful except the heavy brass lamp on my father's desk.
I grabbed it.
Vanessa stared at me.
“What are you doing?””
“Protecting my family.””
The irony wasn't lost on me.
Only a few minutes earlier, I'd been wondering whether Vanessa was the person I should fear.
Now I was standing beside her, holding a lamp like my life depended on it.
The footsteps reached the top of the stairs.
Mom whispered my name.
“Marcus.””
“Don't move.””
A shadow passed across the gap beneath the study door.
I raised the lamp.
The doorknob slowly turned.
The door opened.
And Claire stepped inside.
She looked terrified.
“Don't hit me.””
I lowered the lamp.
“Claire?””
She closed the door behind her.
“Lock it.””
“What happened?””
“Lock the door.””
I did.
Claire leaned against it, breathing hard.
“Someone followed me.””
Vanessa stared.
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“You don't know?””
“I saw a black SUV outside.””
She looked at me.
“It followed me here.””
My jaw tightened.
“Why didn't you call?””
“I did.””
I checked my phone.
Three missed calls.
Unknown number.
Claire saw my expression.
“They've been calling me too.””
Vanessa took a step backward.
“What do they want?””
Claire looked at her.
“You.””
Vanessa's face went pale.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“What did you do?””
“I didn't do anything.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You borrowed money you couldn't repay. You hired someone to investigate your husband. You lied to your friends. You let a stranger manipulate you.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to fix everything.””
Claire looked at me.
“That wasn't what the stranger wanted.””
I turned toward her.
“What did he want?””
Claire pulled a folded piece of paper from her purse.
“He gave me this.””
I took it.
There was a name written across it.
*Daniel Carter.*
Underneath were four words.
*Ask Marcus about Rachel.*
I frowned.
“Rachel?””
Vanessa's head snapped toward me.
“You know a Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“Who is she?””
“My coworker.””
Claire shook her head.
“Not that Rachel.””
I felt the room tighten around us.
“What other Rachel?””
“The investigator's report mentioned her.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“That was the woman in the pictures.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Claire reached into her purse again.
She handed me several printed pages.
“Read.””
I scanned the first paragraph.
My stomach dropped.
The report had been compiled by the private investigator Vanessa hired.
But parts of it had been blacked out.
Someone had deliberately removed names, dates, and addresses.
Only one line remained visible.
*Subject has repeated contact with Rachel Carter.*
I looked at Vanessa.
“Carter?””
She nodded slowly.
“That's Daniel's last name.””
“Your investigator knew that?””
“I don't know.””
I kept reading.
Another line.
*Potential familial connection under investigation.*
I looked up.
“Why would a private investigator be checking whether Rachel was related to Daniel?””
Claire looked at Vanessa.
“She said she didn't know.””
“I didn't.””
I turned another page.
A photograph was attached.
It showed a woman sitting inside a diner.
The woman had dark hair.
She looked familiar.
But not because I'd met her.
Because I'd seen her before.
In an old photograph.
My father's photograph.
My stomach twisted.
“Where did this come from?””
Claire answered.
“The file.””
I held the photograph closer.
“That's her.””
“Who?””
“The woman from the picture Vanessa showed me.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“So you admit you know her?””
“No.””
“Then why is she everywhere?””
“I don't know.””
Claire's eyes widened.
“Marcus.””
She pointed at the bottom of the photo.
There was a date.
Twenty-seven years earlier.
I stared.
“That can't be.””
“What?”” Vanessa asked.
I looked at the woman again.
She looked almost exactly the same.
Twenty-seven years couldn't be right.
Then I noticed something.
A second person was visible through the diner window.
A man.
My father.
I stopped breathing.
“Where was this taken?””
Claire said, “A restaurant in Ohio.””
“My father never lived in Ohio.””
Mom's voice came from behind me.
“Yes, he did.””
Everyone turned.
Mom sat down slowly.
“I never told you that.””
“What did you just say?””
“He lived there before we met.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“He was working there.””
“With whom?””
She didn't answer.
I looked at the photograph.
“Rachel.””
Mom's face changed.
She looked as though she'd been struck.
“You know her.””
Mom whispered, “Yes.””
Vanessa took a step back.
“Who is she?””
Mom's eyes filled with tears.
“She was your father's fiancée.””
I couldn't speak.
“What?””
“Before me.””
Claire covered her mouth.
Vanessa looked at me.
“This is impossible.””
“No,” Mom said.
“It isn't.””
She stared at the photograph.
“She disappeared.””
“What do you mean disappeared?””
“One day she was there. The next, she wasn't.””
“Did Dad leave her?””
“I thought so.””
“You thought so?””
Mom shook her head.
“He told me she left on her own.””
“Did you believe him?””
“I had no reason not to.””
I looked at the report.
“Then why is she connected to Daniel?””
Mom's face went white.
“I don't know.””
“You do.””
“Marcus…”
“You know something.””
She closed her eyes.
“When Daniel first came to our house, he showed me a photograph.””
“Of Rachel?””
“Yes.””
I felt the room spinning.
“What did he say?””
“He said Rachel was his mother.””
The silence was absolute.
Vanessa whispered, “Then Daniel is…”
“Yes,” Mom said.
“Rachel's son.””
I stared at the photograph again.
My father's face.
Rachel's face.
And somewhere between them was the brother I'd never known existed.
But the questions multiplied.
“Why would Daniel blame us?””
Mom shook her head.
“He said your father ruined his mother's life.””
“Did he?””
“I don't know.””
“But he came after the trust.””
“Yes.””
“So this is about money.””
Mom hesitated.
“I don't think it's only about money.””
“What else?””
She looked at me.
“He believes your father stole something from Rachel.””
“What?””
“I don't know.””
“Mom.””
“I swear.””
A sharp sound came from downstairs.
Glass breaking.
Everyone jumped.
Someone was in the house.
Claire whispered, “They found us.””
I motioned for everyone to stay quiet.
Another crash.
Then footsteps.
This time they were fast.
I moved toward the door.
Vanessa grabbed my sleeve.
“Marcus, don't.””
I looked at her.
“You're staying here.””
“No.””
“You need to stay with Mom.””
“And you?””
“I'm going downstairs.””
Claire stepped forward.
“I'm coming.””
“No.””
“You don't know what you're dealing with.””
“I'll figure it out.””
Claire shook her head.
“That's exactly what Daniel wants you to do.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed toward the safe.
“He wants you to chase the wrong person.””
I glanced back.
My father's letter.
The person you should fear is the one standing beside you.
The words burned in my mind.
I slowly looked at Vanessa.
She noticed.
“What?””
I didn't answer.
Her face crumpled.
“You think it's me.””
“I don't know what to think.””
“After everything?””
“That's the problem.””
A loud bang came from downstairs.
Then silence.
I tightened my grip on the lamp.
“I'll be right back.””
I walked into the hallway.
The house felt different.
The lights downstairs were off.
Moonlight spilled through the windows.
I reached the top of the staircase.
“Who's there?””
No answer.
I stepped down.
One step.
Two.
Three.
I saw the broken glass near the front door.
The door was open.
The wind moved the curtains.
Nobody was there.
Then I noticed something on the floor.
A photograph.
I crouched and picked it up.
My mother.
Standing beside my father.
And another man.
My heart stopped.
The man in the photograph wasn't Daniel.
He was younger.
Maybe thirty.
And underneath the photograph was a handwritten note.
*You have been looking in the wrong place.*
I turned the photograph over.
There was an address.
An old motel.
And a room number.
214.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a man's voice said,
“Did you find the safe?””
I didn't answer.
He laughed.
“You should have listened to your father.””
I felt my heartbeat pounding.
“Who are you?””
“You already know.””
“Daniel?””
“No.””
The voice was calm.
Almost amused.
“Daniel is just cleaning up his father's mess.””
I froze.
“His father?””
The man laughed softly.
“You still don't understand.””
“What do you want?””
“What your father promised.””
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
“You will.””
The line went dead.
I stood there in the dark, staring at the photograph.
Daniel is just cleaning up his father's mess.
His father's mess.
That meant Daniel wasn't acting alone.
I turned toward the stairs.
Vanessa was standing there.
Watching me.
“Who was it?””
I held up the photograph.
“Do you recognize him?””
She looked at it.
Her expression changed instantly.
“No.””
“Look closer.””
She stared again.
Then she shook her head.
“I've never seen him.””
I believed her.
At least I wanted to.
Then Claire came down the stairs.
She saw the photograph.
Her face went pale.
“Marcus…”
“What?””
“I know that man.””
I turned toward her.
“From where?””
She swallowed.
“From the bank.””
“What bank?””
“The day Vanessa withdrew the two thousand dollars.””
My skin went cold.
“You saw him there?””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“I saw him yesterday.””
“Where?””
“At the hospital.””
“What hospital?””
“The one your mother goes to.””
I stared at her.
“What was he doing there?””
Claire looked toward Mom.
“He was asking for her medical records.””
I felt every muscle in my body tighten.
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
“Did he give a name?””
“Yes.””
“What name?””
Claire's voice dropped.
“Daniel Carter.””
I looked at the photograph again.
It wasn't Daniel.
But now I understood something.
The man in the photograph had the same eyes.
The same sharp jaw.
The same cold expression.
He wasn't Daniel.
He was someone connected to him.
Someone who had been close to my family for decades.
Someone my father had known.
And maybe someone my mother had known too.
I climbed back upstairs.
Mom was standing at the doorway of the study.
She saw the photograph in my hand.
Then she covered her mouth.
“Where did you get that?””
“Someone left it downstairs.””
She stared at it.
“Mom.””
She didn't answer.
“Who is he?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You don't want to know.””
I stepped closer.
“Yes, I do.””
She shook her head.
“He was your father's closest friend.””
“And?””
“He knew every secret.””
“What was his name?””
Mom closed her eyes.
“Richard Gray.””
The room seemed to stop.
I looked at Claire.
She was shaking.
Vanessa whispered, “Gray.””
I remembered the name.
Mr. Gray.
The person mentioned at the investigator's office.
The person who had already paid for the file.
The person behind the messages.
The person watching my mother.
I looked at Mom.
“Why did you never tell me about Richard Gray?””
She started crying.
“Because I thought he died twenty years ago.””
I looked down at the photograph.
At the man who supposedly wasn't supposed to be alive.
Then my phone buzzed.
Another message.
**Motel. Room 214. Midnight.
Come alone. Bring the letter from your father.**
I showed it to Claire.
She immediately shook her head.
“Don't go.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You can't.””
Mom looked at me.
“Marcus, please.””
I stared at the message.
Then at my father's letter.
Then at the photograph.
Someone had spent weeks manipulating my wife.
Someone had been watching my mother.
Someone had access to our money.
And now someone wanted the letter my father had hidden for decades.
But there was one thing they didn't know.
I had already made a copy of every page.
And I wasn't going to room 214 empty-handed.
For the first time that night, I stopped reacting.
I started planning.
Because whoever was behind this had spent a long time believing my family would remain silent.
They had made one mistake.
May you like
They had pushed me too far.
And by sunrise, I intended to know exactly who Richard Gray was—and why my father had spent the last years of his life hiding him from me.
