Chapter 9: The Secret That Could Break The Family Apart
David thought the hardest part was over.
He was wrong.
Three days after Mia’s apology, Lauren requested a meeting.
Not a phone call.
Not a message.
A meeting.
David agreed.
They sat across from each other at a quiet restaurant.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Finally, Lauren broke the silence.
“I want to explain.””
David looked at her.
“Okay.””
She took a deep breath.
“There’s something you don’t know.””
David felt his stomach tighten.
“What?””
Lauren looked nervous.
“I lied about something when we first met.””
David waited.
“I told you I understood your relationship with Aaliyah.””
“Yes.””
“I didn’t.””
David’s face remained calm.
“What does that mean?””
Lauren looked away.
“It means I thought things would change after we got married.””
“What things?””
“The way you loved her.””
David frowned.
“My daughter?””
Lauren nodded.
“I thought eventually she would become less dependent on you.””
David stared at her.
“She was sixteen when we got married.””
“I know.””
“She was still grieving.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I wanted to be your first priority.””
The honesty was painful.
David leaned back.
“And when that didn’t happen?””
Lauren whispered:
“I became resentful.””
The restaurant noise faded around them.
David looked at the woman he had once trusted completely.
“You should have talked to me.””
“I know.””
“You should have told me you were struggling.””
“I know.””
“Instead, you let my daughter feel unwanted.””
Lauren looked down.
“I never wanted that.””
“But that’s what happened.””
Silence.
Then Lauren said:
“There’s one more thing.””
David looked at her.
“What?””
She reached into her purse and placed a document on the table.
David picked it up.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
“What is this?””
Lauren looked nervous.
“A legal agreement.””
David read further.
It was a document she had prepared months earlier.
A plan.
A plan to convince David to separate some of his assets before their marriage fully ended.
His hands tightened around the paper.
“You were planning this?””
Lauren shook her head quickly.
“No.””
“Then explain.””
“I was scared.””
David looked at her.
“Scared enough to prepare for leaving me?””
Lauren had no answer.
Because the truth was there.
On paper.
She had been protecting herself.
Not building a family.
David slowly placed the document down.
And suddenly, he understood something.
The broken dress.
The jealousy.
The lies.
They were all connected.
Aaliyah had not been the problem.
The problem was that some people entered their family wanting love…
But only knew how to fight for control.
David stood up.
“I need time.””
Lauren looked up.
“David…”
He shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“But this time, I need to think about myself.””
As he walked away, Lauren realized something terrifying.
She had spent years trying to make sure Aaliyah didn’t take her place.
May you like
But in the end…
She had been the one who pushed herself out.
