Chapter 2: The Moment Dad Found Out

David had never been the type of man who yelled first.

That was what made people underestimate him.

He wasn’t loud.

He wasn’t aggressive.

He didn’t need to be.

When David Carter was angry, he became quiet.

And that was exactly what happened when he stepped into Aaliyah’s bedroom.

Everyone turned.

Aaliyah immediately wiped her tears.

“Dad…”

David looked at his daughter.

Then he looked at the destroyed dress in her hands.

Then he looked at Mia.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, David asked one simple question.

“Who did this?””

Mia looked away.

Lauren answered quickly.

“It was a misunderstanding.””

David’s eyes moved to his wife.

“A misunderstanding?””

Lauren crossed her arms.

“Mia didn’t mean anything serious. Aaliyah is emotional because of graduation.””

David looked back at the dress.

The torn fabric.

The hours his daughter spent working.

The excitement she had carried for months.

He understood everything.

“No,” he said quietly.

Everyone stopped.

“No, this isn’t about a dress.””

Mia rolled her eyes.

“Dad, seriously? It’s not that deep.””

David looked at her.

“You took something that didn’t belong to you. You destroyed something someone worked hard for. Then you laughed about it.””

Mia’s confidence faded slightly.

“It was ugly.””

David nodded slowly.

“So if you think something is ugly, you’re allowed to destroy it?””

“That’s not what I said.””

“That’s exactly what you did.””

Lauren stepped forward.

“David, you’re overreacting.””

He looked at her.

“Am I?””

“She’s young.””

“Mia is old enough to know right from wrong.””

The room became silent.

Aaliyah watched her father carefully.

She had never seen him look at Mia like that before.

Not angry.

Disappointed.

And somehow, that was worse.

Mia suddenly became defensive.

“You always take Aaliyah’s side.””

David raised an eyebrow.

“Because she was hurt?””

“You treat her like she’s perfect.””

“No,” David replied.

“I treat her like my daughter.””

Those words hit harder than anyone expected.

Mia looked away.

For years, she had compared herself to Aaliyah.

But she never understood why Aaliyah seemed to have something she couldn’t buy.

Aaliyah had someone who believed in her.

Someone who showed up.

Someone who loved her without needing her to compete.

David walked toward the closet.

Everyone watched.

“What are you doing?”” Lauren asked.

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached for Mia’s designer handbag sitting on a chair.

It was expensive.

Very expensive.

Mia immediately noticed.

“Don’t touch that.””

David looked at the bag.

“This?””

“That cost three thousand dollars.””

He nodded.

“Three thousand dollars.””

Mia stepped forward.

“Give it back.””

David held it calmly.

“Why?””

“Because it’s mine.””

He looked at her.

“And Aaliyah’s dress was hers.””

Mia froze.

The meaning finally became clear.

David placed the bag on the table.

“It’s just a piece of leather, right?””

Nobody spoke.

Mia’s face changed.

Because those were almost the exact words she had used.

David continued.

“You said the dress was just fabric. You said it didn’t matter.””

He looked at the bag.

“So this shouldn’t matter either.””

Mia reached for it.

David moved it away.

“But here’s the difference.””

His voice became colder.

“You chose to destroy something meaningful to someone else.””

Aaliyah looked at her father.

For the first time that morning, she felt like someone understood.

David turned toward Lauren.

“And you defended it.””

Lauren opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

David shook his head.

“I thought we were building a family.””

“We are,” Lauren said quickly.

“No. A family protects each other.””

The silence afterward was heavy.

Then David picked up the broken dress and handed it back to Aaliyah.

“I’m sorry this happened.””

Aaliyah’s eyes filled with tears again.

“But graduation starts soon.””

David looked at the damaged dress.

May you like

Then he looked at his daughter.

“Today is still your day.””
