Chapter 8: The Conversation That Changed Everything
Lauren answered the phone after letting it ring several times.
“David.””
Her voice sounded cautious.
“Can we talk?””
She already knew.
“What happened?””
David’s silence told her enough.
“Where did you hear it?””
That question confirmed everything.
David closed his eyes.
“So it’s true.””
Lauren didn’t respond.
“Lauren.””
She sighed.
“David, you don’t understand.””
Those words made him angry.
Because they were familiar.
Everyone who did something wrong seemed to have an explanation.
“I understand enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
“Then explain it.””
Silence.
Finally, Lauren spoke.
“I was tired of feeling like a guest in my own home.””
David frowned.
“A guest?””
“Yes.””
She sounded emotional now.
“Everywhere I looked, there was a reminder of your first wife.””
David’s expression hardened.
“My daughter is not your competition.””
“I know that.””
“Do you?””
Another silence.
Lauren’s voice became quieter.
“I never wanted to hurt Aaliyah.””
“But you did.””
“I just wanted her to stop making me feel invisible.””
David shook his head.
“She was a child.””
“I know.””
“No, Lauren. I don’t think you do.””
His voice broke slightly.
“Aaliyah lost her mother. She wasn’t trying to replace you.””
Lauren closed her eyes.
“I know that now.””
“But not then.””
No answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
David continued.
“You allowed Mia to believe she had to fight Aaliyah for love.””
Lauren whispered:
“I made mistakes.””
David looked down.
Mistakes.
That word felt too small.
“You didn’t make one mistake.””
He paused.
“You made a choice every time.””
The truth hurt.
Because it was accurate.
Meanwhile, Mia sat alone in her apartment.
She had overheard part of her mother’s conversation.
Enough to understand.
Enough to realize something painful.
She had spent years blaming Aaliyah.
But maybe Aaliyah had never been the enemy.
Maybe she had been fighting someone else’s insecurity.
Mia picked up her phone.
She wanted to call Aaliyah.
But she stopped.
What could she say?
Sorry?
Would that be enough?
A few weeks ago, she would have laughed at the idea of apologizing.
Now she understood.
Being forgiven was a gift.
Not something she deserved.
The next day, Mia showed up at David’s house.
David opened the door and looked surprised.
“What are you doing here?””
“I need to talk.””
He stepped aside.
“Come in.””
She entered slowly.
The house looked exactly the same.
But it felt different.
Because she was different.
Aaliyah came downstairs.
When she saw Mia, she stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Mia looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
Aaliyah didn’t answer immediately.
Mia continued.
“I know saying that doesn’t fix anything.””
“No.””
“I know I hurt you.””
Aaliyah looked at her.
“Why did you do it?””
Mia looked down.
The old Mia would have made an excuse.
But not anymore.
“Because I was jealous.””
Aaliyah waited.
“I hated that everyone saw you as special.””
She swallowed.
“But the truth is… you weren’t making me feel less important.””
Aaliyah’s expression softened slightly.
“I did that to myself.””
David watched quietly.
Mia continued.
“I wanted Dad to look at me the way he looked at you.””
Aaliyah nodded.
“I understand that.””
Mia looked surprised.
“You do?””
“Yes.””
“After everything?””
Aaliyah looked at her.
“Understanding why someone hurts you doesn’t mean what they did was okay.””
Mia nodded slowly.
“I know.””
For once, there was no argument.
No competition.
Just two people acknowledging the damage.
Then Mia reached into her bag.
She pulled out something.
A photograph.
Aaliyah looked confused.
“What is that?””
Mia handed it to her.
It was one of the old pictures of Aaliyah’s mother.
One that Mia had moved years ago.
“I found it.””
Aaliyah stared.
“I thought it was gone.””
“I know.””
Mia looked ashamed.
“I should have never touched your things.””
Aaliyah held the picture carefully.
It was small.
Old.
But priceless.
“Thank you.””
Mia nodded.
Then she said something unexpected.
“I don’t expect us to become sisters overnight.””
Aaliyah almost smiled.
“Good.””
Mia looked surprised.
Aaliyah continued.
“Because that would be weird.””
For the first time in years…
They both laughed.
It was small.
But real.
However, not everyone was ready to move on.
Because while Mia was trying to fix what she broke…
Lauren was preparing to fight.
She wasn’t ready to accept losing David.

And she had one final secret.
A secret that could destroy everything they thought they knew.
