Chapter 9: The Last Ride of Marcus Reed

Damon took the phone from Caleb.
"Call her back.""
Caleb did.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
Voicemail.
Hank walked toward him.
"Son, I can explain.""
Caleb stepped away.
"Don't call me that.""
Hank stopped.
For the first time, the old biker seemed to understand how badly he had damaged the boy.
Victor approached the table.
"We need to find your mother.""
Frank was still staring at the photographs.
"She's my sister.""
Nobody answered.
"My mother was Margaret Sullivan. Arthur is my father. That means Sarah is my half-sister.""
Elizabeth nodded.
"Yes.""
Frank rubbed his face.
"And Caleb...""
"Is your nephew," Elizabeth replied.
Frank looked at the boy.
"I didn't know.""
Caleb's voice was cold.
"Neither did I.""
Damon took the USB drive Arthur had left behind.
"Can we open this?""
Victor nodded.
"There's a computer in the office.""
They moved into the back room.
The old computer took several minutes to start.
Victor inserted the drive.
A folder appeared.
Inside were hundreds of documents.
Bank transfers.
Hospital records.
Scanned photographs.
And audio files.
Caleb noticed one file dated three days before his father's death.
*MARCUS_FINAL_RECORDING.wav*
He clicked it.
The speakers crackled.
Then his father's voice filled the room.
"Caleb, if you've found this, I'm sorry.""
Caleb froze.
He hadn't heard his father's voice in three weeks.
The familiar sound made his eyes fill immediately.
"There's something I should have told you a long time ago. Your mother is not who she thinks she is. Neither is Hank. Neither is Victor.""
Damon closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
"I spent twenty years believing I could protect everyone by keeping quiet. I was wrong.""
A pause.
Then Marcus took a shaky breath.
"The money from the family fund was never supposed to go to Daniel. It was supposed to go to someone else.""
Victor leaned toward the speaker.
"Who?""
Marcus continued.
"Someone who has been living inside the Iron Saints since the beginning. Someone who has been using our dead brothers' names to move money through the club.""
Caleb looked at the screen.
A second audio file appeared.
*THE REAL ACCOUNT OWNER.*
He clicked it.
Marcus's voice returned.
"The account belongs to Margaret Sullivan.""
Hank staggered backward.
"No.""
Caleb looked at him.
"Your wife?""
Hank shook his head.
"Margaret died twelve years ago.""
Marcus's recording continued.
"Margaret never died in 2014. The woman buried under her name wasn't Margaret.""
Hank grabbed the desk.
"Stop it.""
But Caleb continued listening.
"The woman who died was Sarah Miller. Margaret arranged the switch because she knew Arthur would come looking for her.""
Elizabeth covered her mouth.
"Margaret...""
Marcus's voice became quieter.
"Margaret is alive. She's been hiding in a small town outside Nashville. She has the original financial records, the hospital documents, and the truth about the warehouse fire.""
Hank sank into a chair.
Caleb stared at him.
"Your wife is alive.""
Hank shook his head.
"I buried her.""
"No," Elizabeth whispered.
"You buried Sarah.""
Hank began crying.
He covered his face with both hands.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Victor opened another folder.
It contained a scanned bank statement.
The account had received monthly deposits for twenty-seven years.
The last payment was made three days before Marcus died.
The beneficiary's name was listed as:
*MARGARET SULLIVAN.*
And the withdrawal authorization carried a digital signature.
*VICTOR KANE.*
Damon slowly turned.
"Victor.""
Victor stared at the screen.
"I didn't authorize that.""
"Your signature is there.""
"Someone copied it.""
Hank stood.
"Like someone copied mine?""
Victor looked at him.
"Exactly.""
Damon grabbed Victor's jacket.
"Who has access to your account?""
"Nobody.""
"Think!""
Victor pulled away.
"Marcus had access.""
Caleb stared at him.
"My dad?""
Victor nodded.
"Marcus was the club treasurer. He could see every transaction.""
"Then why would his signature be on the withdrawals?""
Victor shook his head.
"That's what I don't understand.""
Caleb opened the next file.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Marcus sitting in a hospital room.
Beside him was an older woman.
Her face was partially turned away.
Caleb zoomed in.
A silver bracelet was visible on her wrist.
Hank recognized it.
"Margaret.""
Elizabeth looked at the photograph.
"That's her.""
Caleb read the date.
October 20, 2026.
Only twelve days earlier.
His father had visited Margaret shortly before his death.
The next file was a video.
Caleb clicked it.
The screen showed Marcus sitting inside a parked motorcycle garage.
He looked exhausted.
His beard was longer than Caleb remembered.
There was a bruise beneath his left eye.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, I didn't make it.""
Caleb's lips trembled.
Marcus continued.
"I need you to understand something. The Iron Saints didn't betray me. One person did. And that person has been sitting beside me at every funeral for twenty-seven years.""
The camera shifted slightly.
A shadow moved behind him.
Marcus looked over his shoulder.
"Who's there?""
The recording stopped.
Damon leaned closer.
"Play it again.""
Caleb did.
This time, he noticed something.
A reflection in the motorcycle's chrome fuel tank.
Someone was standing behind Marcus.
Wearing a leather vest.
The Iron Saints patch was visible.
But the face wasn't.
Victor paused the video.
"Look at the shoulder.""
The figure had a small tear in the leather.
A triangular tear near the club emblem.
Damon looked around the room.
Then he noticed the same tear on someone's jacket.
Frank Miller.
Everyone turned.
Frank looked down.
His face went white.
"I can explain.""
Damon stepped toward him.
"How long have you been following Marcus?""
Frank shook his head.
"I wasn't following him.""
"Then why are you in the video?""
Frank removed his jacket.
Beneath it, his shirt was stained with blood.
He had a deep cut across his ribs.
Caleb stared.
"Who did that?""
Frank looked at Hank.
"Your brother.""
Hank frowned.
"What?""
"Daniel. He attacked me two nights ago.""
Elizabeth stepped forward.
"Where?""
"At the hospital.""
Victor grabbed his arm.
"Which hospital?""
Frank looked toward the door.
"The one where he's been hiding.""
Caleb's heart began pounding.
"Is he alive?""
Frank nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then why did you attack him?""
Frank's eyes filled.
"Because he told me something I couldn't believe.""
Damon stepped closer.
"What?""
Frank looked directly at Caleb.
"He said your father wasn't Marcus.""
Caleb shook his head.
"Stop saying that.""
Frank continued.
"He said the man who raised you wasn't Daniel either.""
Hank slowly sat down.
Frank swallowed.
"He said the real Marcus died in 1999. The real Daniel died three years later. And the man who raised you was someone else entirely.""
Elizabeth began crying.
Victor whispered:
"That's impossible.""
Frank shook his head.
"Daniel showed me the original hospital records.""
Caleb looked at the screen.
Three babies.
Three names.
Three lives built on lies.
Then Frank delivered the final blow.
"He told me the man who raised you was our father.""
Caleb stared at him.
"Our father?""
Frank nodded.
"Arthur Miller.""
The room went silent.
Damon shook his head.
"No. That's impossible.""
Frank looked at Caleb.
"Your mother was Margaret's daughter. Arthur was her father. But the man who raised you...""
He struggled to finish.
"Was also Arthur.""
Caleb felt his legs weaken.
His father had loved him.
He had raised him.
He had protected him.
And now three different men were claiming to be the man who had been his father.
His phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
*UNKNOWN NUMBER:*
Come to Saint Mary's Hospital.
Room 317.
Daniel is waiting.
Then another message arrived.
Bring the fifteen Iron Saints.
One of them knows which brother came home.
Caleb looked up.
"He's alive.""
Hank grabbed his helmet.
"Then we're going.""
Victor stood.
"All of us?""
Caleb nodded.
"All fifteen.""
Damon picked up his keys.
But before anyone could leave, the computer chimed.
A new file had appeared on the USB drive.
It hadn't been there before.
Its title was simple.
*THE LAST RIDE.*
Caleb opened it.
A photograph appeared.
Marcus stood beside his motorcycle.
Behind him were fourteen bikers.
All wearing their Iron Saints jackets.
At the far right stood a fifteenth man.
The face was clear.
It was Caleb.
But the photograph was dated:
*1999.*
And beneath it was a handwritten message.
