Chapter 15: The Fifteenth Brother

The Iron Saints returned to Black Ridge Pass just before midnight.

Fifteen motorcycles climbed the mountain road.

No one spoke.

No one played music.

The men who had gathered to honor Marcus three weeks earlier were now riding toward the place where his life had ended.

Caleb sat behind Damon.

Daniel rode beside them.

Elizabeth followed on her own motorcycle, wearing the original Iron Saints jacket.

Hank rode at the front.

His president's patch was gone.

He no longer considered himself worthy of it.

At the summit, headlights illuminated an abandoned roadside building.

Margaret sat tied to a wooden chair.

A man stood behind her.

Frank's twin.

He was taller, with a shaved head and a scar running from his ear to his jaw.

He smiled when the bikers arrived.

"Well," he said.

"The family reunion is finally complete.""

Frank stepped forward.

"Who are you?""

The man laughed.

"Your brother.""

"My brother is dead.""

"That's what Father told you.""

Arthur Miller emerged from the building.

He looked exhausted.

But he was still standing.

Caleb recognized him immediately.

"You.""

Arthur nodded.

"Me.""

Damon moved toward him.

"Where's Margaret?""

Arthur pointed.

"Right there.""

Caleb took a step forward.

The twin raised a pistol.

"Nobody moves.""

Daniel stepped between Caleb and the gun.

"Let her go.""

The twin smiled.

"Hello, Uncle Daniel.""

Daniel froze.

Frank looked between them.

"Who is he?""

The man approached.

"My name is Andrew Miller.""

He pointed at Frank.

"Your twin brother.""

Frank shook his head.

"Why did they separate us?""

Andrew looked at Arthur.

"Because Father wanted one son inside the Iron Saints and another outside it.""

Arthur nodded.

"One to watch the club. One to control the people who were stealing from it.""

Frank's expression changed.

"You used me.""

Andrew smiled.

"We both did.""

Caleb looked at Arthur.

"Why bring us here?""

Arthur stepped forward.

"Because your father left something behind.""

He pointed at the metal box Caleb was carrying.

"The original key. The one that opens the final compartment.""

Caleb held it tightly.

"What's inside?""

"The truth.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Don't give it to him.""

Arthur laughed.

"Still protecting the boy?""

"He's not a boy to you. He's a bargaining chip.""

Arthur's smile disappeared.

"Give me the key, Caleb.""

"No.""

Andrew raised the pistol.

"Then Margaret dies.""

Frank stepped forward.

"Take me instead.""

Andrew looked at him.

"You always were the favorite.""

Frank's voice cracked.

"I didn't know you existed.""

"That's because Father made sure you didn't.""

Arthur moved toward Margaret.

"Open the box.""

Caleb looked at Daniel.

Daniel gave a barely visible nod.

Caleb inserted the brass key.

The hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small digital recorder and a folded document.

Arthur reached for them.

Caleb pulled them away.

"First, tell me who killed Marcus.""

Arthur stared.

Then he laughed.

"Your grandfather.""

"Thomas?""

"Yes.""

Hank stepped forward.

"Thomas is dead.""

Arthur looked at him.

"Not when Marcus died.""

Damon frowned.

"What?""

Arthur explained.

"Thomas arranged the crash. I attacked Marcus. But Thomas was the one who made sure nobody could save him.""

Caleb's hands shook.

"Why?""

"Because Marcus had discovered the original family records.""

Daniel looked at Arthur.

"Which records?""

Arthur pointed at the document.

"The ones showing that Thomas had been stealing money from the families for twenty-seven years.""

Caleb unfolded it.

A complete list of transactions appeared.

Every withdrawal.

Every account.

Every signature.

But one name appeared more often than the others.

*MARGARET SULLIVAN.*

Caleb looked at her.

"Why is your name everywhere?""

Margaret began crying.

Arthur answered.

"Because Margaret was the person who created the hidden accounts.""

Hank stared at his wife.

"You told me you knew nothing.""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"By stealing money?""

Margaret shook her head.

"I never stole from the families. I moved the money into protected accounts when Thomas threatened to take control of the club.""

Arthur laughed.

"She was supposed to transfer it to me.""

Margaret looked at him.

"Never.""

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Then you left me no choice.""

He raised his gun toward her.

A shot rang out.

But it didn't come from Arthur.

Hank had drawn a weapon.

The bullet struck the wooden post beside Margaret.

Arthur turned.

Damon charged.

The two men collided, crashing against the side of the building.

Andrew raised his pistol toward Caleb.

Frank tackled him.

The weapon fired into the night.

Daniel rushed forward and freed Margaret.

Elizabeth grabbed Caleb's arm.

"Get behind the bikes!""

But Caleb didn't move.

He had found the digital recorder.

He pressed play.

A voice emerged.

Thomas Reed.

If anything happens to me, the Iron Saints will be left with nothing. The family fund is mine. The club is mine. The boys are mine.

Another voice answered.

Arthur's.

And the children?

Thomas replied:

Children grow up. Money doesn't.

The recording continued.

Then another voice spoke.

It was Margaret.

You promised me the boys would be safe.

Thomas answered:

Only if you give me the fifteenth rider.

Caleb looked at his mother.

"What does that mean?""

Margaret wiped her face.

"It means Thomas wanted you.""

"Why?""

"Because you were the only child who carried the bloodline of all three families.""

Caleb frowned.

"What?""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Thomas had arranged the marriages, the identities, and the hospital records. He wanted a child who could legally inherit everything connected to the Reed, Sullivan, and Miller families.""

Hank stared.

"Caleb?""

Margaret nodded.

"Yes.""

The recording continued.

Thomas's voice returned.

The boy will inherit the club. And when he does, every account will belong to me.

Caleb looked at the men fighting near the building.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

The missing money.

The false identities.

The three babies.

The mysterious fifteenth rider.

Thomas hadn't simply wanted to steal the Iron Saints' money.

He wanted to own the next generation.

Arthur had been helping him.

Margaret had tried to stop him.

Marcus had discovered the plan.

And that discovery had cost him his life.

Damon finally managed to pull Andrew away from Frank.

Victor tackled Arthur.

The old man hit the ground.

Hank stood over him.

For a moment, he had the opportunity to finish what he had started decades earlier.

But he lowered his weapon.

"You're going to answer for everything.""

Arthur spat at his boots.

"You're still the same coward.""

Hank nodded.

"Maybe.""

He turned toward Caleb.

"But I'm done being one.""

In the distance, police sirens approached.

Elizabeth had called the authorities before the ride began.

This time, the original records and Thomas's confession were already in their hands.

Andrew and Arthur were arrested.

Victor surrendered.

Frank gave a statement about his father's involvement.

And Hank handed over the Iron Saints financial records.

Nobody tried to escape.

For the first time in twenty-seven years, the truth was no longer buried.

Three months later, the Iron Saints gathered again.

Not at Black Ridge.

Not at the old clubhouse.

They met in a quiet cemetery outside Knoxville.

A new headstone stood beneath a large oak tree.

*MARCUS REED*

Brother. Father. Friend.

Caleb placed his father's helmet beside the flowers.

Damon stood beside him.

"You ready?""

Caleb nodded.

Fifteen motorcycles were parked along the cemetery road.

Some of the men had left the club.

Others had stayed.

Hank was no longer president.

He had pleaded guilty to his part in the conspiracy and agreed to cooperate with investigators. He would spend years paying for the decisions he had made.

Victor was awaiting sentencing.

Frank had reconciled with his twin, though neither knew whether they could ever become brothers in the ordinary sense.

Daniel had moved into a small house near Caleb and Elizabeth.

He visited every Sunday.

He never asked Caleb to call him Dad.

And Caleb never did.

He already had a father.

The man who taught him to ride.

The man who stayed up when he was sick.

The man who had left him a key and a warning.

The man whose identity had been stolen, whose history had been rewritten, and whose final act had been protecting his son.

Margaret approached the grave.

She placed a small silver ring beside the flowers.

"I should have told you everything," she whispered.

Caleb looked at her.

"He knew you loved him.""

Margaret wiped her eyes.

"I hope so.""

Damon stepped forward.

"Marcus would have hated all this crying.""

A few men laughed.

Then Hank approached.

He carried a folded leather jacket.

Marcus's original Iron Saints jacket.

He placed it beside the helmet.

"Your brother would be proud of you," he told Caleb.

Caleb looked at him.

"Don't say that unless you mean it.""

Hank nodded.

"I mean it.""

The two men stood silently.

Then Caleb climbed onto his motorcycle.

The fifteen riders started their engines.

This time, there was no anger.

No accusations.

No hidden messages.

Just fifteen men honoring someone they had nearly lost twice.

Caleb took the lead.

He looked at the empty road ahead.

And remembered the last line of his father's letter.

Don't let the past decide who you become.

He released the clutch.

The motorcycles moved forward.

One by one.

Fifteen engines roared through the Tennessee mountains.

Six months later, Caleb received an envelope in the mail.

There was no return address.

Inside was a photograph of Marcus standing beside the original Iron Saints.

The same photograph that had started the entire investigation.

But something had been written on the back.

You found the fifteen. You found the money. You found the men who betrayed your father.

But there is one thing nobody told you.

The Iron Saints were never founded by fifteen men.

Caleb turned the photograph over again.

A small figure stood behind the group.

A woman.

Her face was partly hidden by the shadow of a tree.

Caleb enlarged the image.

Then he recognized her.

Elizabeth.

But the date beneath the photograph was 1978.

Long before Marcus was born.

Long before the warehouse fire.

Long before the Iron Saints existed.

A final sentence was written beneath the date.

*ASK YOUR MOTHER WHO THE FIRST IRON SAINT REALLY WAS.*

Caleb looked toward the kitchen.

Elizabeth was making coffee.

Daniel was sitting at the table.

Damon was outside, cleaning his motorcycle.

For the first time in months, Caleb felt afraid of asking another question.

But he walked into the kitchen anyway.

"Mom?""

Elizabeth turned.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

He placed the photograph on the table.

Her smile disappeared.

She stared at the woman standing behind the original bikers.

Then she slowly sat down.

"Where did you get this?""

"It came in the mail.""

Elizabeth touched the photograph.

For a long time, she said nothing.

Then she looked at Caleb.

And whispered:

"Your grandmother founded the Iron Saints.""

Caleb frowned.

"I thought Thomas Reed started it.""

Elizabeth shook her head.

"Thomas stole it from her.""

She turned the photograph over.

On the back, beneath the mysterious message, was a name Caleb had never heard before.

*ELEANOR REED.*

Elizabeth looked toward the window.

"Your grandmother didn't die in 1978.""

Caleb felt his heart begin to race.

"Then where is she?""

Elizabeth stood.

And for the first time since Marcus's death, she locked the front door.

"She's the reason your father was killed.""

Outside, a motorcycle engine started.

Then another.

And another.

Caleb looked through the window.

Fifteen riders stood at the end of the driveway.

But none of them wore an Iron Saints patch.

They all wore the same silver cross.

May you like

And the woman standing at the front of them was holding Marcus Reed's original helmet.

*THE END.*
