Chapter 8: The Mother Who Disappeared

Caleb couldn't breathe.
His mother.
The woman who packed his lunches, attended parent-teacher meetings, and waited up whenever he came home late.
The woman who had cried beside him at his father's funeral.
Arthur was claiming she was somehow connected to a secret from 1999.
"What's her real name?"" Caleb demanded.
Arthur folded the photograph.
"Ask her.""
"Where is she?""
"Somewhere safe.""
Damon stepped forward.
"You're not taking him anywhere.""
Arthur looked at the men surrounding him.
"You still don't understand. I'm not here to take the boy. I'm here to offer him a choice.""
"What choice?"" Victor asked.
"Find the truth, or let the past bury everyone who remembers it.""
Hank laughed bitterly.
"You burned a warehouse, stole money from grieving families, and threatened a seventeen-year-old. Don't pretend you're offering anything.""
Arthur looked at him.
"You're right about the money.""
He turned toward Frank.
"Your father handled the transfers. Frank inherited the access codes.""
Frank shook his head.
"I never stole anything.""
Arthur smiled.
"You don't have to believe me.""
He pulled a small USB drive from his pocket and placed it on the table.
"Every transaction is here. Every payment. Every name.""
Victor reached for it.
Arthur placed his gun on the table.
"Careful.""
Victor withdrew his hand.
Arthur continued.
"Four hundred thousand dollars wasn't stolen for personal profit. It paid for Daniel's treatment, protected the people who helped him, and kept the Reed family secret buried.""
Caleb looked at him.
"Then why did my father die?""
Arthur's expression changed.
"Because Marcus found the original birth records.""
Elizabeth stepped forward.
"You're lying. Marcus already knew about the children.""
"Not about the third one.""
Arthur pointed at the photograph.
"Your mother was born in 1999. She was taken from the hospital and raised under a different identity. Her biological mother was Margaret Sullivan.""
Hank shook his head.
"Margaret died in 2014.""
"Yes.""
"She never told me she had another child.""
Arthur smiled.
"She didn't know.""
Elizabeth's eyes filled.
"Margaret believed the baby had died.""
Arthur nodded.
"That was the story Thomas told her.""
Caleb looked at the photograph again.
The woman holding the baby looked exactly like the woman who had raised him.
He remembered his mother's stories about her childhood.
She had always said she was adopted.
Her parents had died when she was young.
She had no photographs from before the age of six.
Caleb had never questioned it.
"What's my mother's name?"" he asked again.
Arthur looked at him.
"Her birth name was Sarah.""
Elizabeth gasped.
Hank grabbed the table.
"Sarah Miller?""
Arthur nodded.
"Your mother was the daughter of Margaret Sullivan and Arthur Miller.""
Frank slowly turned toward Arthur.
"You're saying Caleb is my brother?""
Arthur smiled.
"Half-brother.""
Frank looked sick.
Caleb stared at the photograph.
His mother had been born in the same year as the warehouse fire.
The fire that killed Sarah.
The woman whose name had appeared in the newspaper.
The woman who had supposedly died.
But if his mother was Sarah, then who was the woman who died?
Elizabeth answered before he could ask.
"Your mother's name was changed to protect her. The Sarah who died in the warehouse was her aunt.""
Arthur's smile faded.
"Enough.""
Elizabeth continued.
"Your father was supposed to take the baby out of the hospital. He never did. Margaret's husband found out and arranged the kidnapping.""
Arthur raised his gun.
"I said enough.""
Hank moved between him and Elizabeth.
"You've done enough damage.""
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
"You think you're a hero, Hank? You helped me bury the truth.""
"I was twenty-three years old.""
"And you were paid.""
Hank's expression collapsed.
Caleb looked at him.
"Paid with what?""
Arthur answered.
"With the Iron Saints.""
Damon frowned.
"What?""
"Thomas offered Hank control of the club if he kept the brothers separated and helped conceal the warehouse records.""
Hank shook his head.
"I never wanted the money.""
"But you wanted power.""
Hank didn't respond.
Arthur picked up the USB drive.
"Now, Caleb, you're going to come with me.""
"No.""
Arthur raised the pistol.
"Your mother is waiting.""
Caleb's eyes widened.
"You said she was safe.""
"She is. For now.""
Victor suddenly stepped forward.
"Arthur, I know where Daniel is.""
Arthur turned.
Victor continued.
"I know which hospital. I know the room. I know the doctor.""
Arthur stared at him.
"How?""
"Marcus told me.""
Elizabeth looked horrified.
"You knew?""
Victor nodded.
"Marcus called me three days before the crash. He said he had found Daniel. He said Daniel wanted to come home.""
Hank grabbed Victor.
"Why didn't you tell us?""
"Because Daniel was afraid.""
"Afraid of whom?""
Victor looked at Arthur.
"His son.""
Arthur's smile vanished.
Frank slowly turned toward him.
"Your son?""
Arthur didn't answer.
Victor looked at Caleb.
"Daniel wasn't the only one who survived the warehouse fire. Arthur's wife was pregnant that night.""
Elizabeth whispered:
"No.""
Victor nodded.
"She gave birth three months later.""
Frank stared at Arthur.
"Who was the baby?""
Arthur lowered his gun.
For the first time, the old man's confidence disappeared.
Victor answered.
"Frank Miller.""
Frank looked at his father.
Then at Caleb.
The room seemed to tilt.
Arthur shook his head.
"You're making this more complicated than it needs to be.""
Frank stepped closer.
"You told me my mother died giving birth.""
"She did.""
"You told me I was your only child.""
"You were.""
"Then why is Caleb my brother?""
Arthur's jaw tightened.
"Because Margaret had a daughter with me before she married Hank.""
Hank looked stunned.
"Margaret?""
Arthur nodded.
"Your wife was never the woman you thought she was.""
Hank's face went pale.
Elizabeth whispered:
"Thomas arranged all of it.""
Arthur finally lost his temper.
"THOMAS IS DEAD!""
The shout echoed through the clubhouse.
Then Arthur looked at Caleb.
"Your father discovered the truth about your mother. He was going to expose everything. He was going to destroy the lives of everyone who had survived.""
Caleb clenched his fists.
"So you killed him?""
Arthur stared at him.
"I didn't cut his brakes.""
The room went silent.
Damon stepped forward.
"Then who did?""
Arthur looked at Victor.
And Victor slowly raised both hands.
"Don't look at me.""
Arthur smiled.
"That's exactly what Marcus said before he died.""
He turned toward the door.
"Ask your mother who called her that night.""
Then he walked out.
His men followed.
Frank remained behind, staring at the photograph of the three babies.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then Caleb's phone rang.
His mother's name appeared on the screen.
He answered immediately.
"Mom?""
Her voice was trembling.
"Caleb, listen carefully. Don't trust Hank. Don't trust Victor. And whatever you do, don't let Frank come near you.""
Caleb looked at Frank.
"Why?""
His mother began crying.
"Because your father wasn't killed by Arthur.""
A pause.
Then she whispered:
"Your father was killed by the person who has been protecting you since the day you were born.""
The call disconnected.
Caleb looked slowly around the room.
Hank.
Victor.
Frank.
Damon.
May you like
One of them had murdered his father.
And one of them had been protecting the killer.
