Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Hid To Protect Me
The photograph slipped from my fingers.
I stared at it on the table, unable to understand what I was seeing.
My name.
My signature.
A date from years ago.
And underneath it, a document that connected everything I thought I knew about Damon, my father, and the beginning of my marriage.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Not me.
Not my father.
Not even the ticking clock on the wall seemed loud enough to break the silence.
Finally, I looked up.
“Explain.””
My father lowered his eyes.
That hurt more than anger.
Because my father had always looked at me when he spoke.
He had always been honest.
But now he looked like someone carrying a burden he had carried alone for too long.
“Dad.””
My voice cracked.
“Explain.””
He sat down slowly.
“I wanted to.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
“When would you have told me?””
His silence became unbearable.
I pushed the document toward him.
“Was everything a lie?””
His head lifted immediately.
“No.””
The answer came with such force that I believed him.
For a moment.
Then I looked at the papers again.
“Then what is this?””
My father took a deep breath.
“Before you met Damon, there was a business agreement.””
I frowned.
“Between who?””
“Between Damon’s company and mine.””
I stared at him.
“What kind of agreement?””
My father hesitated.
“A partnership proposal.””
I looked confused.
“And I was involved?””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“Not directly.””
“Then why is my name on this?””
My father looked at the paper.
“Because Damon asked about you.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
My father’s expression darkened.
“Because he knew you were my daughter.””
The room felt colder.
“He researched me.””
“Yes.””
“And you knew?””
“Yes.””
I looked away.
The pain wasn’t just about Damon anymore.
It was about the fact that my father had carried this secret while I built my entire life around a man who had entered it with hidden intentions.
“You should have told me.””
“I know.””
The words were quiet.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just acceptance.
That somehow made it harder.
“Why didn’t you?””
My father’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because after I discovered what Damon was doing, I confronted him.””
I looked at him.
“What did he say?””
“He admitted he wanted an opportunity.””
My hands tightened.
“But he claimed something else.””
“What?””
My father looked at me.
“He said he never expected to fall in love with you.””
I closed my eyes.
Those words hurt because they sounded like something Damon would say.
Something believable.
Something complicated enough to make you question whether the good moments were real.
“Did you believe him?””
My father was silent.
Finally, he answered.
“No.””
That hurt.
“But I saw you.””
His voice softened.
“I saw how happy you were.””
I looked down.
“And you chose my happiness over the truth.””
“I chose what I thought was your happiness.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“That wasn’t your choice to make.””
“I know.””
My father’s voice broke slightly.
“And that is the mistake I regret most.””
For the first time in days, I felt angry.
Not the explosive anger I felt toward Damon.
Something deeper.
Something painful.
Because with Damon, I expected betrayal.
With my father, I didn’t.
“You both made decisions for me.””
My father looked at me.
“Damon decided what I deserved to know.””
I wiped my tears.
“And you did the same thing.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
The fact that he accepted it immediately made my anger soften.
Because Damon would have argued.
He would have explained.
He would have found someone else to blame.
My father simply accepted that he had hurt me.
“I was afraid,” he said.
“Of what?””
“That if I told you everything, you would never trust anyone again.””
I looked at him.
“And now?””
He swallowed.
“Now I know hiding the truth hurt you more.””
Silence filled the room.
Then my baby moved.
My hand immediately went to my stomach.
My father noticed.
His expression softened.
“Are you okay?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
But I wasn’t.
Not completely.
Because my entire understanding of love had changed.
I used to think love meant protecting someone from pain.
Now I understood something different.
Sometimes the truth hurt.
But lies hurt longer.
That evening, I received another message.
This time from Damon.
*I know you spoke to Lacey.*
I stared at the screen.
I didn’t respond.
Another message arrived.
*She is trying to manipulate you.*
I almost smiled.
Because it was exactly what he always did.
Whenever someone revealed something about him, they became the problem.
I replied:
*Me: Did she lie?*
The typing bubble appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally:
*Damon: She doesn’t tell the whole truth.*
I looked at the message.
Not a denial.
Not “she’s lying.””
Just an accusation that she wasn’t telling everything.
I typed:
*Me: Did you know about my father’s concerns before we married?*
The response took longer.
Much longer.
Finally:
*Damon: Yes.*
My heart sank.
Even though I already knew.
Seeing him admit it still hurt.
*Me: Did you love me?*
Minutes passed.
Then:
*Damon: Yes.*
I stared at that word.
One word.
A word that once meant everything.
Now it meant nothing without honesty behind it.
*Me: Then why did you lie?*
This time, his answer came quickly.
*Damon: Because I was afraid that if you knew everything, I would lose you.*
I closed my eyes.
That was the sentence that explained everything.
Not just the beginning.
Everything.
Damon didn’t lie because he didn’t care.
He lied because he cared more about keeping me than respecting me.
And that wasn’t love.
Not the kind I deserved.
Three days later, Damon’s company officially collapsed.
The news spread everywhere.
Investors withdrew.
Partners cut ties.
The image he had spent years building disappeared almost overnight.
But something unexpected happened.
I didn’t feel happy.
I thought I would.
After everything he did, I thought seeing him lose everything would feel like justice.
Instead, I felt empty.
Because revenge was not healing.
Moving forward was.
My father found me reading the news.
“You’re worried about him.””
I didn’t deny it.
“I don’t want him destroyed.””
My father nodded.
“That says a lot about you.””
I looked at him.
“What does it say?””
“That even after someone hurt you, you don’t become cruel.””
I looked back at the article.
“Maybe I’m just tired.””
He smiled faintly.
“Sometimes peace looks like exhaustion before it feels like freedom.””
I smiled slightly.
Then my phone rang.
A number I didn’t recognize.
I answered cautiously.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Are you Damon’s wife?””
I froze.
“Yes.””
“My name is Claire.””
I didn’t recognize the name.
“I used to work with Damon.””
My body became tense.
“Why are you calling me?””
There was hesitation.
“Because I think you deserve to know the final truth.””
I looked at my father.
“What truth?””
The woman took a breath.
“Damon wasn’t the only person who knew about your marriage before it happened.””
My heart stopped.
“What do you mean?””
“I mean…”
Her voice lowered.
“There was someone else guiding everything.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Silence.
Then she answered.
“The person who introduced Damon to your world.””
I stood frozen.
“Who was it?””
The answer came.
And it was the last name I expected.
“Your father’s closest business partner.””
I couldn’t breathe.
Because suddenly, this was bigger than Damon.
Bigger than Lacey.
Bigger than my marriage.
Someone had been moving pieces around my life long before I knew there was a game.
And now I needed to find out why.
May you like
Because the truth I had spent weeks searching for…
Was only the beginning.
