Chapter 6: The Secret Lacey Used To Tear My Family Apart

I stared at the message until the words became blurry.

*Ask your father why he never told you the truth about your own marriage.*

My first reaction was confusion.

Then fear.

Not the same fear I felt inside the cedar kennel.

That was the fear of being physically trapped.

This was different.

This was the fear of discovering that everything you believed about your life might have been built on a lie.

I slowly placed my phone on the table.

My father noticed immediately.

“What happened?””

I hesitated.

For years, I had believed my father was the one person in my life who would always tell me the truth.

The one person who protected me.

The one person who never had a hidden agenda.

But Lacey’s words planted a seed of doubt.

And once doubt entered your mind, it was difficult to ignore.

“She said something.””

My father’s expression changed slightly.

“Who?””

“Lacey.””

The moment I said her name, his jaw tightened.

“What did she say?””

I picked up my phone and showed him the message.

He read it silently.

His reaction was subtle.

But I knew him.

I saw it.

A flicker of pain.

A moment of hesitation.

And that scared me more than anger would have.

“Dad.””

He looked up.

“What is she talking about?””

For several seconds, he said nothing.

That silence hurt.

Because silence from strangers meant nothing.

But silence from my father meant something existed.

Something he wasn’t telling me.

“Dad.””

My voice became quieter.

“Please.””

He sat down slowly.

“I hoped you would never have to know this.””

My stomach tightened.

“Know what?””

He looked at the floor.

“Before you married Damon, I found something.””

I waited.

“Something about him?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

My heart stopped.

“About me?””

My father looked at me.

And that was when I knew.

“Yes.””

The room suddenly felt smaller.

I pulled my hands together.

“What does that mean?””

He took a deep breath.

“There is something about the beginning of your relationship with Damon that I never told you.””

I felt a cold feeling spread through my body.

“The beginning?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer came quietly.

“Because I was afraid of losing you.””

I stared at him.

“I don’t understand.””

My father closed his eyes briefly.

“When you met Damon, you were happy.””

“I was.””

“You believed he was everything you wanted.””

“He was.””

My father nodded sadly.

“And I saw how much you loved him.””

A pause.

“But I also saw something else.””

“What?””

“He knew exactly how to make you feel special.””

I frowned.

“Isn’t that what someone does when they love you?””

“Yes.””

My father looked at me.

“But there is a difference between making someone feel loved and making someone feel dependent.””

His words stayed with me.

Because suddenly, I remembered.

The early days with Damon.

How quickly he became my entire world.

How he always knew what to say.

How he made me feel like nobody else understood me.

At the time, I thought it was romance.

Now, I wondered.

“What did you find?””

My father walked to his desk and opened a drawer.

He removed an old envelope.

He placed it in front of me.

“I received this before your wedding.””

My hands hovered above it.

“From who?””

“Someone who worked with Damon.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

My breath caught.

It was Damon.

Years ago.

Standing beside a woman I didn’t recognize.

“What is this?””

My father answered softly.

“Before you, there was another woman.””

I looked up.

“An ex?””

“Yes.””

“That isn’t a secret.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“That isn’t the problem.””

I looked back at the picture.

“What is?””

My father’s voice became heavier.

“She disappeared after accusing Damon of using her.””

I froze.

“Using her?””

“She claimed Damon only stayed with people who benefited him.””

I stared at the photo.

“That sounds impossible.””

My father nodded.

“I know.””

Because I had once said the same thing.

“But I investigated.””

My fingers tightened.

“And?””

He looked at me.

“And I found enough concerns to warn you.””

My heart sank.

“You warned me?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before the wedding.””

I looked at him.

“Dad…”

My voice broke.

“Why don’t I remember?””

His eyes filled with sadness.

“Because Damon was there.””

A chill went through me.

“What?””

“He convinced you that I didn’t trust him.””

I stopped breathing for a second.

Memories came back.

A conversation before our wedding.

My father saying he had concerns.

Damon telling me my father was trying to control my life.

Damon holding my hands.

Telling me:

“Your father will never see me as good enough.””

At the time, I had comforted him.

I had defended him.

I had chosen him.

My father saw the realization on my face.

“You remember.””

I whispered:

“Yes.””

The pain was overwhelming.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Damon had not only betrayed me recently.

He had been shaping my choices from the beginning.

But there was still one thing I didn’t understand.

“Then why did you let me marry him?””

My father looked devastated.

“Because after I showed you my concerns, you looked at me like I was trying to take away your happiness.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Don’t apologize.””

“But you were right.””

“I was worried.””

He reached for my hand.

“But you were an adult. You had the right to make your own choices.””

That was my father.

Even when he was hurt.

Even when he was afraid.

He still respected me.

Something Damon had stopped doing.

That afternoon, I received another message.

This time from Damon.

*Damon: Lacey contacted you, didn’t she?*

I stared at the screen.

How did he know?

I replied:

*Me: Why does that matter?*

The answer came quickly.

*Damon: Because she is trying to destroy everything.*

I almost laughed.

Everything.

That word.

Everyone was talking about destroying everything.

But nobody was talking about the person who had already destroyed my trust.

I typed:

*Me: What exactly is she trying to destroy?*

The typing bubble appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally:

*Damon: She knows things she shouldn’t know.*

My heart started beating faster.

*Me: Like what?*

This time, the answer took longer.

*Damon: I don’t know.*

I didn’t believe him.

Not completely.

Because Damon had always been good at hiding things.

I looked at my father.

“What if Lacey is telling the truth?””

My father became serious.

“About what?””

“That there is something else.””

“There probably is.””

His honesty surprised me.

“You think so?””

My father nodded.

“People like Lacey don’t make threats unless they believe they have power.””

“Then what is she hiding?””

My father looked toward the window.

“I don’t know yet.””

That answer frightened me.

Because my father always seemed to have answers.

But this time, he didn’t.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Too many questions filled my mind.

About Damon.

About Lacey.

About my father.

About the years I thought I understood.

Around midnight, I walked downstairs for water.

As I passed my father’s office, I noticed the door was slightly open.

Inside, he was on the phone.

I wasn’t trying to listen.

But then I heard a name.

My name.

“I know.””

My father sounded exhausted.

“I should have told her years ago.””

I stopped.

A second later, he said:

“No, she deserves the whole truth.””

My heart began racing.

The whole truth?

About what?

I stepped back before he could see me.

But before I walked away, I heard one more sentence.

And it changed everything.

“I never told her that Damon didn’t choose her by accident.””

I froze.

My blood turned cold.

“What?””

I whispered to myself.

My father continued speaking.

“He chose her because of who she is.””

I covered my mouth.

What did that mean?

Damon didn’t choose me because he loved me?

Then why?

The hallway suddenly felt endless.

Because for the first time, I questioned the very beginning of my marriage.

The first meeting.

The first conversation.

The first moment Damon looked at me and said he knew I was different.

What if it wasn’t fate?

What if it was a plan?

And if my father had known this all along…

Why had he let me walk into it?
