Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew My Husband Before I Did

For the first time in months, I stopped searching for answers from Damon.

I stopped asking why he changed.

I stopped wondering what I had done wrong.

Because the truth was finally clear.

The problem was never that I wasn’t enough.

The problem was that Damon had built our relationship on secrets long before I ever knew there was something to question.

But one question remained.

Lacey.

She was not just a woman who appeared in our marriage.

She had been there before.

She knew Damon before I did.

She knew things about him that I never knew.

And now I needed to understand why.

When I returned to my father’s house, I found him waiting in the living room.

One look at my face, and he knew the conversation with Damon had not gone well.

“You know.””

I nodded.

“He admitted it.””

My father closed his eyes briefly.

Not from surprise.

From disappointment.

“What exactly?””

I sat down slowly.

“He knew who I was before we met.””

My father remained silent.

“He knew about our family.””

Another pause.

“And Lacey knew too.””

His expression changed.

“That is what worries me.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Why didn’t you tell me everything?””

My father looked at me.

“Because I needed proof.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“But while everyone was collecting proof, I was living a lie.””

My father looked hurt.

And immediately, I regretted my words.

Not because they weren’t true.

But because I knew he had been trying to protect me.

“I’m sorry.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was gentle.

“You have every right to be angry.””

I looked away.

“I don’t know who to believe anymore.””

My father came closer.

“Believe actions.””

I looked at him.

“Not promises. Not apologies. Not words someone says when they are afraid of losing something.””

His words reminded me of Damon.

The endless promises.

The endless explanations.

And yet, when I needed him most, he had chosen cruelty.

That evening, I received a message.

From Lacey.

*We need to talk. Alone.*

I stared at the screen.

My first instinct was to ignore it.

But curiosity won.

Because there was one thing I needed to know.

Why?

Why had she spent so much time trying to replace me?

Why had she waited until I was vulnerable?

Why did she believe she deserved my life?

I agreed to meet her.

Not because I trusted her.

Because I wanted answers.

We met at a small café away from the city.

When I arrived, Lacey was already there.

She looked different from the woman who stood in my bedroom wearing my robe.

There was no confidence.

No smile.

Only tension.

She looked at my stomach.

Then quickly looked away.

“I didn’t think you’d come.””

“I almost didn’t.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

I sat across from her.

“Then talk.””

She took a breath.

“I know you hate me.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I wasn’t sure if hate was the right word anymore.

Hate required energy.

And I was tired.

“I don’t understand you,” I said.

Her eyes lifted.

“What?””

“I don’t understand how someone can watch another woman suffer and feel nothing.””

Her expression changed.

“I didn’t want that.””

I almost laughed.

“You stood there.””

She looked down.

“You watched him lock me away.””

“I know.””

“And you stayed in my room.””

Her silence answered.

“You wanted my life.””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“Then what did you want?””

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then whispered:

“I wanted the life I thought I was promised.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What does that mean?””

She looked around before speaking.

“Damon and I knew each other before you.””

“I know.””

“But you don’t know how.””

I waited.

“He hired me when his company was just starting.””

I nodded.

“That’s what I knew.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became softer.

“He didn’t just hire me.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What happened?””

“He made me believe there was a future.””

I stayed silent.

“He told me I was important.””

My hands tightened.

“He told me once his company became successful, he would stop hiding things.””

“Things?””

She looked at me.

“Us.””

The word hit me.

“You were together?””

She hesitated.

“Not officially.””

That answer angered me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Damon wanted everything.””

I stared at her.

“He wanted someone who understood his ambition.””

Her eyes lowered.

“And he wanted someone who gave him the image he needed.””

Me.

I understood.

My family.

My father.

My background.

Everything Damon needed to appear successful.

“And then I came along.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

The silence between us grew.

“So you blamed me.””

She looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

At least she admitted it.

“I thought you stole him.””

I looked at her.

“You thought I stole a man who chose to marry me?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like you never saw me as a person.””

Her eyes filled slightly.

“I didn’t.””

The honesty surprised me.

“And that was wrong.””

I looked away.

For months, I had imagined this conversation.

I imagined screaming.

I imagined demanding answers.

But now, sitting across from her, I realized something.

Lacey was not the only person who destroyed my marriage.

Damon was.

Because she could want him.

She could manipulate.

She could lie.

But Damon made the choices.

“What changed?””

I asked.

Lacey looked confused.

“What?””

“Why are you telling me this now?””

She was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“Because Damon betrayed me too.””

I froze.

“What?””

She gave a bitter smile.

“You think I was special?””

I said nothing.

“He used me.””

The words sounded familiar.

“He told me I mattered. He told me I understood him better than anyone.””

She looked at me.

“Then he married you.””

I didn’t know what to say.

“After that, I spent years believing he would leave you.””

My chest tightened.

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“And eventually I realized something.””

“What?””

“That Damon never loved either of us the way we thought.””

The sentence stayed with me.

Because maybe that was the hardest truth.

Maybe Damon wasn’t choosing between two women.

Maybe he was choosing himself all along.

Before leaving, Lacey reached into her bag.

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“What is that?””

“Something you need to see.””

I didn’t touch it.

“Why?””

“Because Damon isn’t the only person who hid something.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

She stood.

“Open it when you’re ready.””

I looked at the envelope.

“Lacey.””

She stopped.

“Did you know about the kennel?””

Her face changed.

A flicker of shame.

“Yes.””

My throat tightened.

“And you still let it happen.””

She looked down.

“I thought if he finally saw you as the problem, he would choose me.””

The honesty was painful.

“But when I saw you in there…”

She swallowed.

“I realized I had become someone I hated.””

For the first time, I saw regret in her eyes.

Real regret.

Not the kind Damon showed when consequences arrived.

The kind that came from finally seeing your own actions clearly.

I picked up the envelope.

Before leaving, Lacey said one final thing.

“Your father loves you.””

I looked at her.

“But there is something he never told you.””

My heart stopped.

“Something about Damon?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Then she walked away.

I returned home with the envelope still unopened.

My father immediately noticed it.

His face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

I stared at him.

“You know what it is?””

He didn’t answer.

And that was answer enough.

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“Please.””

Slowly, he sat down.

And for the first time in my entire life, my father looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not protective.

Afraid.

“What is inside?””

His voice was quiet.

“The truth about why Damon chose you.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one photograph.

One document.

And one name.

My name.

But underneath it was something I had never seen before.

A signature.

A date.

And a secret that made my entire world stop.

Because the truth was not just that Damon had planned our relationship.

May you like

The truth was that my father had known about it from the very beginning.

And he had never told me.
