Chapter 5: The Truth Isabella Left Behind

Elena Rossi looked nothing like the woman Matteo expected to find.

He expected fear.

Desperation.

Someone hiding because they were guilty.

Instead, Elena looked like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.

Her dark hair was pulled back.

Her face showed exhaustion.

But her eyes were sharp.

Focused.

And full of regret.

“Matteo Varric,” she said.

His weapon remained raised.

“You know who I am.””

“I knew Isabella.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

Elena looked toward Liana.

Then toward Nico, who was sleeping in the arms of a security guard nearby.

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Pain.

“He has her eyes.””

Matteo’s hand tightened.

“Explain.””

Elena looked at him.

“Your wife knew she was going to die.””

Liana inhaled sharply.

Matteo did not move.

“Choose your next words carefully.””

“I have spent seven months choosing them.””

“You expect me to believe Isabella knew she would die?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she believed telling you would get Nico killed.””

The room became silent.

Matteo’s anger disappeared.

Replaced by something colder.

“Who threatened my son?””

Elena looked away.

“That is the problem.””

“What does that mean?””

“The person threatening Nico is someone you trust.””

Matteo immediately thought of his inner circle.

People who had served him for years.

People who knew his security systems.

People who knew his family.

Liana looked between them.

“How does Daniel fit into this?””

Elena’s eyes moved to her.

“You’re Liana Graves.””

The question was not surprised.

It was recognition.

Liana went still.

“You know me?””

“I know Daniel.””

Her voice softened.

“He loved you.””

Liana’s expression changed.

“How?””

“Because he talked about you constantly.””

The words hurt.

Because Daniel had been gone.

Because she had spent three weeks believing she would never hear anyone say his name with warmth again.

“He told me you were the reason he wanted to leave everything behind.””

“What everything?””

Elena looked at Matteo.

“Your organization.””

Matteo stared.

“My organization?””

“Daniel worked for you.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Impossible.””

“He was assigned to protect Isabella.””

Matteo felt anger rising.

“You’re telling me my security officer was secretly working for my wife?””

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“He was working for you.””

“Then why didn’t I know?””

“Because someone removed his file.””

The answer was worse.

Someone inside.

Someone powerful.

Someone close enough to erase information without being questioned.

Matteo walked toward the wall of photographs.

“Why was Daniel investigating Isabella?””

Elena hesitated.

“Because Isabella discovered something about Nico’s birth.””

Matteo stopped.

Liana looked confused.

“What about his birth?””

Elena looked at the baby.

Then at Matteo.

“Nico’s biological mother was not the woman you thought.””

The sentence destroyed everything.

Matteo stared.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

His voice became dangerous.

“You are saying my wife was not Nico’s mother?””

“She was his mother.””

Elena corrected.

“But not by blood.””

The room spun.

Liana looked at Matteo.

For the first time, she saw him truly lose control.

Not anger.

Not violence.

Pain.

“My wife raised him.””

“Yes.””

“She loved him.””

“Yes.””

“She died protecting him.””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you telling me this?””

Elena’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because you deserve the truth.””

Matteo turned away.

The idea was impossible.

Nico was his son.

He had never questioned it.

Never needed to.

But suddenly every strange detail had a different meaning.

The woman in the nursery.

The hidden files.

The photographs.

The warnings.

“What is Nico?”” Matteo asked quietly.

Elena looked at him.

“He is the reason powerful people are willing to destroy your family.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“It’s a warning.””

Liana held Nico tighter.

“Why does he recognize me?””

Elena looked at her.

And the answer changed everything.

“Because your baby knew him.””

Liana froze.

“What?””

Elena’s voice became softer.

“Before Daniel died, he was protecting both children.””

The room went silent.

“Both?””

Elena nodded.

“Your baby and Nico.””

Liana’s face went pale.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“My baby died.””

Elena looked at her with sadness.

“Did you ever see the body?””

The question shattered her.

Because the answer was no.

The hospital had handled everything.

The funeral home had arranged everything.

She had been too broken to ask questions.

Matteo noticed.

“Liana.””

She looked at him.

Her entire world had changed.

“My baby was gone.””

Elena shook her head.

“Someone wanted you to believe that.””

A terrible silence followed.

Then Nico woke.

The baby looked around.

His eyes found Liana.

Then he reached for her.

May you like

And Elena whispered:

“Because he remembers the person who saved him.””
