Chapter 1: The Baby Who Remembered Her

The silence after Nico stopped crying was more terrifying than the screaming had been.

Matteo Varric had lived through gunfire, betrayal, and wars fought in the shadows of powerful men. He had watched enemies smile while planning his downfall. He had learned that danger rarely announced itself.

But nothing in his life had prepared him for the sight of his nine-month-old son peacefully sleeping in the arms of a stranger.

Liana Graves.

A maid who had walked into his mansion less than an hour ago.

A woman who should have been invisible.

Yet Nico held onto her as if he had been searching for her all his life.

Matteo stared at the security footage frozen on the tablet screen.

The woman in the video had entered his son’s nursery three weeks earlier.

She had worn a staff uniform.

She had known the security codes.

She had moved through the Varric estate like someone who belonged there.

And now, standing in the nursery with his son resting against her shoulder, Liana looked just as confused as he was.

“I don’t understand,” Matteo said.

His voice was quiet, but the danger beneath it was obvious.

Most people feared Matteo Varric because of his reputation. They knew him as the man who controlled businesses across three countries, the man whose name could end negotiations before they began.

But Liana noticed something nobody else seemed brave enough to see.

He was not angry.

He was afraid.

“You said someone tried to take him,” she whispered.

Matteo’s eyes moved toward his son.

“Yes.””

“Did you ever find out who she was?””

“No.””

“Did you find out why she came?””

His jaw tightened.

“She left no explanation.””

Liana looked back at the paused image.

The woman in the footage had placed something beneath Nico’s mattress.

Something Matteo’s security team claimed they never found.

Liana did not believe them.

Not because she thought they were lying.

Because she knew what grief looked like when someone was hiding something.

She had seen it in mirrors.

She had carried it every morning since losing her baby.

“What happened to your wife?”” Liana asked softly.

The room changed.

Matteo’s expression became unreadable.

“Why are you asking questions about my family?””

“Because Nico is connected to what happened.””

“He was nine months old when his mother died.””

“I know.””

“You don’t know anything about my family.””

The words were sharp.

Liana lowered her eyes.

“No. I don’t.””

For a moment, Matteo almost regretted the harshness in his voice.

Almost.

Then Nico shifted.

Both adults looked down.

The baby opened his eyes.

The moment he saw Matteo, he reached toward him.

But when Matteo moved closer, Nico turned his face back into Liana’s shoulder.

That small movement hurt more than Matteo expected.

His own son had chosen someone else.

Someone unknown.

Someone who had no reason to matter.

Liana noticed.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For making you feel like he chose me.””

Matteo froze.

Nobody spoke to him like that.

Nobody saw through him that quickly.

“He doesn’t know you,” Matteo said.

“I know.””

“Then why does he trust you?””

Liana looked down at Nico.

“I don’t know.””

But the truth was more complicated.

The moment she held him, something inside her had broken open.

Not because Nico was her son.

He wasn’t.

She knew that.

But because the warmth of him reminded her of what she had lost.

The tiny hands.

The soft breathing.

The impossible feeling that another human being depended completely on you.

She had spent twenty-two days trying to survive without that.

And now this child had reached for her like he remembered something she did not.

Matteo noticed the sadness in her eyes.

“You have children?””

The question came unexpectedly.

Liana went still.

“Yes.””

“Where are they?””

Her fingers tightened around Nico.

“One.””

“Where is the child?””

She looked away.

A painful silence answered him.

Matteo understood.

He did not apologize.

Men like him rarely knew how.

But his expression softened slightly.

“What happened?””

Liana swallowed.

“My baby died.””

The words were barely audible.

Yet they filled the entire room.

Matteo looked at her differently.

Not as a suspicious employee.

Not as a stranger.

As someone carrying a wound he recognized.

Because he carried one too.

His wife, Isabella, had been gone seven months.

Seven months since the car accident that destroyed his family.

Seven months since he had become both a father and a broken man.

But before he could say anything, Nico suddenly grabbed Liana’s necklace.

Matteo noticed immediately.

A small silver pendant hung beneath her uniform collar.

Nico pulled it free.

Liana gasped.

“No—”

She quickly covered it.

Too late.

Matteo had seen it.

The pendant.

The engraving.

A single letter.

“V.””

His entire body went still.

“What is that?””

Liana’s face changed.

“Nothing.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“It belonged to someone I knew.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“My husband.””

Matteo stared.

“Your husband had a V pendant?””

Liana looked confused.

“Yes.””

“Where did he get it?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer bothered him.

Everything about this woman bothered him.

The way Nico recognized her.

The way she knew exactly how to calm him.

The way his son reached for a necklace connected to a mysterious past.

Matteo stepped closer.

“Liana.””

She looked up.

“Tell me everything about your husband.””

Before she could answer, the nursery lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every camera screen went black.

Matteo immediately turned toward the door.

His instincts changed in an instant.

The grieving father disappeared.

The mafia boss returned.

“Stay behind me.””

Liana pulled Nico closer.

“What’s happening?””

Matteo didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

May you like

Someone had entered the most protected room in his entire estate.

And whoever it was had chosen the exact moment his son was in the arms of a woman who was supposed to be a stranger.
