Chapter 10: The Child Hidden Beyond the City

The room remained silent after Daniel’s words.

Nico was stolen too.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the truth was too large to understand.

Matteo stared at Daniel as if he were trying to decide whether to believe him or destroy him.

“You’re saying my son was taken?””

Daniel nodded.

“Not your son alone.””

His eyes moved to Liana.

“Both children.””

Liana’s hands tightened around Nico.

“No.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.””

Daniel stepped closer carefully.

“I know.””

“You’re telling me someone took my baby and replaced him?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Daniel looked at Matteo.

“Someone changed the records.””

The room went still.

Matteo understood immediately.

The documents.

The hospital files.

The missing information.

The impossible connection between two children.

Someone had not taken Nico away.

Someone had changed the story around him.

“Why?”” Matteo asked.

Daniel looked at Teresa.

“Because they needed everyone to believe only one child mattered.””

Teresa remained silent.

That silence confirmed more than any confession.

Matteo turned toward her.

“You knew.””

Her expression did not change.

“I knew enough.””

The answer nearly broke him.

“You knew someone was after my son.””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

“I protected him.””

“You hid the truth.””

“I kept him alive.””

Matteo’s eyes darkened.

“You don’t get to call that protection.””

Teresa looked at him.

“You think honesty keeps people alive?””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“But lies destroy families.””

For the first time, Teresa looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

Because somewhere beneath everything, she still saw herself as a mother.

But Matteo no longer knew what that meant.

Daniel placed a small envelope on the table.

“This is where your child is.””

Liana froze.

Her entire body stopped.

“My son?””

Daniel nodded.

“I found the location three days ago.””

“Then why didn’t you come to me?””

His expression changed.

“Because I was being followed.””

“By who?””

Daniel looked at Matteo.

“People inside your organization.””

Matteo clenched his jaw.

“How many?””

“I don’t know.””

“You worked for me.””

“Yes.””

“Then you should know.””

Daniel looked tired.

“I knew how to protect Isabella. I knew how to protect the children. But I didn’t know who I could trust anymore.””

The words hit Matteo.

Because they reflected exactly how he felt.

Everyone had become a question.

Everyone had become a possible enemy.

Liana opened the envelope.

Inside was an address.

A small town outside the city.

A photograph.

Her breath disappeared.

A baby.

Her baby.

Older than the last time she had seen him.

Alive.

Her hands shook.

She touched the picture.

“He’s alive.””

Nobody answered.

Because they could hear the pain in her voice.

Three weeks of grief.

Three weeks of believing she had lost everything.

And now she had proof that the universe had given her back what it took.

Matteo watched her.

Something changed inside him.

Before tonight, Liana had been a mystery.

A woman connected to danger.

A stranger who somehow calmed his son.

Now she was something else.

A mother who had been robbed of the truth.

And Matteo understood something.

He could not protect Nico while ignoring her child.

“We leave now.””

Teresa looked up.

“No.””

Matteo turned.

“What did you say?””

“You cannot go there.””

“Why?””

“Because they expect you to.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“She’s right.””

Matteo looked at him.

“Explain.””

“The address is real.””

“And?””

“And it is a trap.””

Silence.

Liana looked at the photograph.

“They know?””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“They know you found the truth.””

Matteo looked at Nico.

Then at Liana.

“They will come for him.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then we go anyway.””

Everyone looked at him.

Matteo’s expression hardened.

“I spent months believing I lost my family.””

He picked up the photograph.

“I’m not losing another child because someone thinks I’m afraid.””

The journey lasted two hours.

The city disappeared behind them.

The tall buildings.

The lights.

The world Matteo controlled.

The farther they traveled, the quieter everything became.

Liana sat beside him.

Nico slept in the back seat.

For the first time since the truth began unfolding, there was peace.

Small.

Temporary.

But real.

“You don’t have to do this,” Matteo said.

Liana looked at him.

“Do what?””

“Risk yourself for my family.””

She almost laughed.

“My family is involved too.””

“I mean after everything.””

She looked out the window.

“My whole life changed in one night.””

A pause.

“I don’t even know what’s real anymore.””

Matteo said nothing.

Because he understood.

Then Liana asked:

“Do you hate her?””

“Who?””

“Your mother.””

The question was unexpected.

Matteo looked ahead.

“I don’t know.””

“You hate what she did.””

“Yes.””

“But not her.””

He was silent.

“She raised me.””

Liana nodded.

“Sometimes the people who hurt us are the people who loved us first.””

The sentence stayed with him.

Because it was true.

They reached the address just before sunrise.

A small house.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

Matteo immediately knew something was wrong.

No neighbors.

No movement.

No signs of ordinary life.

He raised a hand.

Everyone stopped.

“Something happened.””

Daniel checked the area.

“The house was abandoned.””

Liana’s heart dropped.

“No.””

She moved forward.

Matteo grabbed her arm.

“Wait.””

But then they heard it.

A baby crying.

Everyone froze.

Liana looked toward the house.

That sound.

That impossible sound.

A mother knew.

She didn’t need proof.

She didn’t need permission.

“My baby.””

She ran.

Matteo followed.

Inside the house, everything was empty.

Except one room.

A nursery.

A crib.

And a small child sleeping inside.

Liana stopped at the doorway.

She could not move.

Because the baby opened his eyes.

And looked at her.

The same way Nico had looked at her.

Like he knew.

Like he remembered.

She covered her mouth.

“My baby.””

The child reached toward her.

And Liana broke.

She picked him up.

The moment she held him, years of pain seemed to leave her body.

She cried.

She laughed.

She whispered apologies.

“I’m sorry.””

Again and again.

“I’m so sorry.””

Behind her, Matteo watched.

And for the first time in a long time…

He saw something that looked like a miracle.

Then Daniel found something on the floor.

A note.

He picked it up.

His face changed.

“What?””

Matteo looked over.

Daniel handed him the paper.

Three words were written.

Not a warning.

Not a threat.

May you like

A message.

“He is watching.””
