Chapter 7: The Grave That Lied

The cemetery gates stood open.

That frightened Ricardo more than locked doors would have.

Rain fell through the branches of old trees.

Bia sat in the back seat.

Helena stayed beside Ricardo.

Neither spoke.

They stopped near the family mausoleum.

Ricardo stepped out.

The stone doors were unlocked.

Inside, their family's names covered the walls.

His mother.

Daniel.

Other relatives.

Then the final plaque.

His father.

Ricardo approached it.

The stone was cold.

He ran his fingers across the inscription.

There was no date of death.

Only:

RESTING IN PEACE.

He frowned.

“That's not normal.””

Helena shook her head.

“No.””

Behind the plaque was a small opening.

Someone had moved the stone.

Ricardo pulled it aside.

A narrow staircase descended beneath the mausoleum.

Bia whispered:

“Mommy knew.””

Ricardo looked back.

“How could she know?””

Helena said nothing.

They went down.

The air smelled damp.

At the bottom was a steel door.

A keypad.

Ricardo entered his father's birthday.

Wrong.

Daniel's birthday.

Wrong.

His mother's birthday.

Wrong.

Bia stepped forward.

“Try mine.””

Ricardo looked at her.

“Why?””

“Mommy used it.””

He entered Bia's birthday.

The door opened.

Inside was a hidden room.

Files lined the walls.

Photographs.

Passports.

Bank records.

And screens.

One screen was still active.

A live video feed.

Ricardo saw himself.

Standing in the room.

The camera had been waiting.

A speaker crackled.

“You took your time.””

Ricardo stepped back.

A man's voice filled the chamber.

Older.

But familiar.

“Dad?””

Silence.

Then:

“You finally found me.””

Helena began crying.

“Mr. Vale…”

Ricardo stared at the speaker.

“You're alive.””

“I never died.””

“Why?””

“Because death is useful when you need people to stop looking.””

Ricardo's hands shook.

“You let us believe you were dead.””

“I protected you.””

“You destroyed us.””

“No. The people around me did that.””

“My brother?””

“A sacrifice.””

“My mother?””

“A complication.””

Ricardo's voice broke.

“You killed them.””

“I gave orders.””

Helena stepped forward.

“Why?””

The voice became colder.

“Because Daniel betrayed me.””

“He tried to expose you.””

“He tried to expose everyone.””

Ricardo looked at the files.

“What is this place?””

“My insurance.””

“Against what?””

“Against the people who believed they controlled me.””

The father continued speaking.

“Every politician. Every executive. Every judge.

Every banker. Everyone who thought money made them untouchable.””

Ricardo stared.

“You collected evidence on everyone.””

“Of course.””

“Why?””

“Because the person with the evidence owns the truth.””

Helena whispered:

“And the phone?””

“What phone?””

“The one Bia found.””

A pause.

Then the father laughed.

“Ah.””

Ricardo felt a chill.

“So you know.””

“I know everything that happens in my family.””

“Then you know my mother left a recording.””

“Yes.””

“She planned for you.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you stop her?””

“Because I wanted to see who would come looking.””

Ricardo suddenly understood.

“The funeral.””

“Yes.””

“You planned the funeral.””

“No.””

“Then who?””

The voice went silent.

A second speaker activated.

A woman's voice.

“Me.””

Ricardo froze.

He knew the voice.

His mother.

Not a recording.

Live.

The speaker crackled.

“She died believing Daniel could still be saved.””

Ricardo's breath caught.

“What?””

The voice continued.

“I told Helena to protect you.””

Helena closed her eyes.

Ricardo turned toward her.

“You knew she was alive.””

“No.””

“You lied again.””

“I didn't know.””

His father's voice returned.

“She doesn't know everything.””

Ricardo spun toward the camera.

“Then tell me.””

“Come upstairs.””

“Why?””

“Because I want to meet my son.””

The steel door behind them slammed shut.

The lights went out.

Bia screamed.

Ricardo grabbed her.

Helena rushed toward the door.

Locked.

Then, in the darkness, another voice whispered from behind them.

“You shouldn't have come alone.””

Ricardo turned.

May you like

A red laser dot appeared on his chest.

Someone had a gun.
