Chapter 8: The Brother in the Shadows
The darkness lasted only a few seconds.
But in those few seconds, Ricardo heard everything.
A chair scraping against concrete.
Someone breathing too quickly.
Bia whispering for her mother.
The detective saying something under his breath.
Then a sharp metallic click.
A gun being loaded.
Ricardo reacted without thinking.
“Everybody down!””
He grabbed Bia and pulled her behind the heavy wooden desk just as a shot tore through the darkness.
Glass exploded somewhere behind them.
Helena screamed.
“Stay down!””
The emergency lights flashed on.
Ricardo looked up.
His father stood near the hidden wall, gripping a pistol.
The detective was on the floor beside the stairs, one hand pressed against his shoulder.
Blood seeped between his fingers.
Gabriel was gone.
Clara was gone too.
Only Helena, Bia, Ricardo, his mother, and his father remained.
“What happened?”” Ricardo shouted.
His mother pointed toward the side door.
“They ran.””
“With the drive?””
“No.””
Ricardo looked down.
The flash drive was still in his hand.
Then he heard it.
A faint tapping sound.
Three taps.
From inside the wall.
Everyone froze.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Ricardo stared at the panel where his father had found the old phone.
“Daniel?””
No answer.
He stepped closer.
His father grabbed his wrist.
“No.””
Ricardo pulled free.
“I'm done listening to you.””
“That wall is not safe.””
“Why?””
His father stared at it.
“Because there is a room behind it.””
“And?””
“No one comes back from that room.””
Ricardo's expression hardened.
“My brother just called me.””
“You heard a voice.””
“I know my brother’s voice.””
“So do I.””
“Then you know he's alive.””
His father looked away.
“That isn't what I said.””
Ricardo slammed his hand against the panel.
A hidden lock clicked.
The section of wall moved inward.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
Cold air rushed into the basement.
Bia whispered:
“Mommy said there was a tunnel.””
Ricardo looked at his mother.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“Your father used it.””
“For what?””
“To move people without being seen.””
The detective struggled to his feet.
“Then that's where they went.””
Ricardo stared into the darkness.
“No.””
His mother touched his arm.
“Ricardo.””
“He called me.””
“I know.””
“Then he wants me to follow.””
His father shook his head.
“That's exactly what he wants you to believe.””
Ricardo turned.
“You keep talking like you know him.””
“I do.””
“Then tell me.””
His father hesitated.
“Daniel wasn't alone when he escaped.””
“Who was with him?””
“Your aunt.””
Ricardo stared.
“That makes no sense.””
“She didn't know where he was going.””
“Then why?””
“She wanted the same thing he did.””
“The evidence.””
His father nodded.
“And the person who controlled it.””
Ricardo's eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
His father looked directly at him.
“You.””
Ricardo felt a chill.
“Me?””
“You've spent twenty years outside the network.””
“Exactly.””
“That made you useful.””
The detective stepped closer.
“Why?””
His father answered.
“Because every major account was moved through companies connected to you.””
Ricardo's face went blank.
“What?””
“I never knew.””
“That was the point.””
His father looked toward the tunnel.
“They used your name without your knowledge.””
“How?””
“Your identity was attached to dormant accounts.””
Ricardo shook his head.
“You're lying.””
“No.””
“Why would you do that to me?””
“To create a clean person.””
“A person they could blame.””
“Yes.””
The detective looked disturbed.
“Then the entire operation could be pinned on Ricardo.””
His father nodded.
“When the time came.””
Bia's mother spoke quietly.
“That was why Daniel fought so hard.””
Ricardo turned.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Daniel believed ignorance would keep you alive.””
“Then he should have trusted me.””
“He trusted you more than anyone.””
Ricardo looked toward the tunnel.
A faint light flickered far ahead.
Someone was moving.
He raised his weapon.
“Let's go.””
His father blocked him.
“I'm going.””
“So am I.””
“No.””
“Move.””
His father didn't.
Ricardo stared him down.
“You hid for twenty years.””
“Yes.””
“You lied to my mother.””
“Yes.””
“You let my brother disappear.””
His father's jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
“And now you're going to tell me what I can do?””
His father slowly stepped aside.
Ricardo entered the tunnel.
The others followed.
The passage sloped downward before opening into a much larger underground corridor.
Old pipes ran along the ceiling.
Water dripped onto the concrete floor.
There were doors on both sides.
Most had numbers painted above them.
209.
210.
211.
Ricardo stopped.
“Room 214.””
The detective looked around.
“This tunnel connects to the hotel?””
His father nodded.
“Underground.””
Ricardo looked at him.
“You built this?””
“I inherited it.””
“From whom?””
“My father.””
“Of course.””
They reached the door marked 214.
It was open.
Inside, they found an empty office.
Dust.
Broken furniture.
A dead computer.
No people.
No Daniel.
No Clara.
Ricardo stepped inside.
“This isn't a trap.””
His father shook his head.
“It's worse.””
He pointed toward the desk.
A photograph sat on top.
Ricardo picked it up.
It showed Daniel and a woman standing beside a car.
Ricardo recognized the woman immediately.
His aunt.
But something was different.
They weren't fighting.
They were smiling.
On the back was a date.
Three weeks before Daniel's supposed death.
And a message.
WE BOTH KNOW WHO THE REAL ENEMY IS.
Ricardo looked at his father.
“What does this mean?””
His father didn't answer.
The computer suddenly turned on.
Everyone jumped.
A video opened automatically.
Daniel appeared on screen.
This time, he wasn't frightened.
He was calm.
Almost confident.
“If you found Room 214, then you're probably wondering why I trusted Clara.””
Ricardo stared.
“I didn't trust her.””
Daniel continued.
“I made her believe I did.””
The room fell silent.
“Your father thinks Clara controls everything.””
Daniel smiled faintly.
“She doesn't.””
Ricardo leaned toward the screen.
“She was being used too.””
His father frowned.
“By whom?””
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“By the woman who taught us all how to disappear.””
Ricardo's breath caught.
His mother whispered:
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“You've been looking at Clara because she wanted you to.””
The screen shifted.
A photograph appeared.
An old family picture.
Ricardo's parents.
His aunt.
Daniel as a teenager.
And another woman.
An elderly woman standing in the background.
Ricardo stared at the face.
He had seen her before.
In a photograph hanging in his grandmother's house.
His great-grandmother.
But the next image made his blood run cold.
A much younger version of that same woman.
Standing beside a stack of bank records.
Daniel's voice continued.
“She started the network before any of us were born.””
Ricardo looked at his mother.
“She’s dead.””
His mother shook her head.
“We thought she was.””
The video continued.
“She created the rules.””
The screen displayed one sentence:
NOBODY LEAVES.
Ricardo stared.
The phrase suddenly meant something different.
Not a command from his uncle.
Not a warning at the funeral.
A rule.
An old rule passed from generation to generation.
Daniel spoke again.
“The people you thought were leaders were only caretakers.””
Ricardo's father stepped toward the computer.
“Turn it off.””
Ricardo blocked him.
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“She kept records on everyone.””
Another folder appeared.
Inside were names.
Hundreds.
Some were crossed out.
Some had dates.
Some had photographs.
Ricardo scrolled.
Then stopped.
His own name appeared.
RICARDO VALE.
Beside it:
ACTIVE.
He stared.
“What does active mean?””
His father closed his eyes.
“It means they never stopped watching you.””
A sound came from the corridor.
Footsteps.
Ricardo spun.
“Who's there?””
No answer.
He stepped outside.
The corridor was empty.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“Ricardo.””
His brother.
Again.
Ricardo's heart pounded.
“Daniel!””
“Come alone.””
Ricardo looked back at the others.
His father shook his head.
“No.””
Ricardo whispered:
“I have to.””
“You don't know if that's him.””
“I know.””
His mother grabbed his hand.
“Don't.””
“Mom.””
“Please.””
“He's my brother.””
“And that's why they'll use him against you.””
The voice returned.
“Ricardo.””
This time it sounded closer.
“Room 219.””
Ricardo looked at the numbers.
219 was three doors away.
He raised his gun.
“I’m coming.””
His father grabbed his shoulder.
“Wait.””
Ricardo turned.
His father's face was full of fear.
“I've been trying to find Daniel for twenty years.””
“Then help me.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
His father whispered:
“Because the last person who saw Daniel alive was your mother.””
Ricardo looked at his mother.
She began crying.
“I didn't know where he went.””
“Tell me.””
“I tried to stop him.””
“From what?””
“He was going to surrender.””
“To the police?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
She shook her head.
“To himself.””
Ricardo stared.
His mother took a shaky breath.
“Daniel found out who Bia's biological father really was.””
Ricardo looked toward the child.
“We already know.””
“No.””
His mother shook her head.
“You don't.””
Everyone went silent.
She knelt beside Bia.
“I'm sorry.””
Bia looked confused.
“Sorry for what?””
Her grandmother touched her cheek.
“Your mother didn't tell you because she was afraid.””
Ricardo's voice was barely audible.
“Who is Bia's father?””
His mother looked at him.
“Not Daniel.””
Ricardo felt the world tilt.
“Then who?””
She looked toward his father.
His father closed his eyes.
Ricardo stepped backward.
“Dad?””
His father's voice was broken.
“I didn't know.””
“You're lying.””
“No.””
“Then who is she?””
His mother whispered:
“Your father's brother.””
Ricardo stared at his uncle's absence.
Then the meaning hit him.
His uncle.
The man who had come to the funeral.
The man who had been shot.
The man who had known about everything.
“But Bia's mother…”
“Was protecting her from him.””
Ricardo could barely breathe.
“Then why did Daniel protect Bia?””
“Because Daniel loved her.””
His mother looked at the tunnel.
“He knew what would happen if the truth came out.””
A loud crash came from Room 219.
Ricardo turned.
The door flew open.
Someone stumbled into the hallway.
Bia's mother.
Blood covered her sleeve.
Ricardo rushed toward her.
“Where were you?””
She grabbed him.
“They took the drive.””
Ricardo looked down.
It was gone.
His hand was empty.
“No.””
She was shaking violently.
“Clara took it.””
“Where is she?””
“She went upstairs.””
“To the house?””
“No.””
Bia's mother looked at Ricardo.
“To the cemetery.””
His mother suddenly went pale.
“What is she going to do there?””
The woman stared at her.
“Open the grave.””
Ricardo frowned.
“Whose grave?””
His mother answered before anyone else could.
“Daniel's.””
Ricardo's chest tightened.
“But the body—”
“There isn't one.””
He stared at her.
The entire family had spent years pretending they knew where Daniel was buried.
Now even his grave was a lie.
Ricardo grabbed Bia's hand.
“We're going.””
His father stepped forward.
“I'll take you.””
Ricardo stopped.
“Why?””
“Because I know what's underneath that grave.””
The detective looked at him.
“What?””
His father stared into the darkness.
“A vault.””
Ricardo's voice dropped.
“What is inside?””
His father answered:
“The evidence your great-grandmother used to control the entire network.””
A distant explosion shook the house above them.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Then Ricardo's phone vibrated.
One message.
FROM DANIEL.
DON'T OPEN THE GRAVE.
A second message appeared.
SHE WANTS YOU TO FIND ME.
And then the third.
I'M UNDER THE HOUSE.
Ricardo slowly looked at the floor.
Everyone went silent.
A deep thump came from somewhere beneath their feet.
Then another.
Then a man's voice rose through the concrete.
“Ricardo.””
His brother.
“Tell Dad I know what he did.””
Ricardo looked at his father.
His father's face went white.
May you like
The voice continued.
“And tell Mom I know she was the one who put me in the coffin.””
