Chapter 7: The Man Who Had Been Watching
The figure at the top of the stairs stepped into the light.
Ricardo’s finger tightened around the trigger.
The detective raised his weapon beside him.
“Don't move.””
The man smiled.
He looked completely calm.
That was what frightened Ricardo most.
He knew that face.
He had seen it countless times over the years.
At family dinners.
At holidays.
At hospital visits.
At Daniel’s funeral.
The same familiar eyes.
The same reassuring smile.
The same hand that had rested on Ricardo’s shoulder when everyone else was crying.
His father’s attorney.
Gabriel.
Ricardo stared at him.
“You.””
Gabriel adjusted the cuff of his shirt.
“You finally figured it out.””
The detective moved his weapon higher.
“Hands where I can see them.””
Gabriel raised both hands.
“I don't have a gun.””
Ricardo laughed bitterly.
“You don't need one.””
Gabriel looked toward the screens.
Bia was still visible on the live feed.
Her mother remained trapped in the hospital room.
Ricardo pointed at the monitors.
“What did you do to her?””
“Nothing.””
“She's being held at gunpoint.””
“That isn't my doing.””
“Then whose?””
Gabriel smiled.
“You're asking the wrong question.””
Ricardo took one step forward.
“Then give me the right one.””
Gabriel looked toward his father.
“Ask him.””
Everyone turned.
Ricardo's father stared at Gabriel.
“You were supposed to destroy the evidence.””
Gabriel's expression changed.
“So you do remember.””
Ricardo felt his stomach tighten.
“You two know each other.””
His father didn't answer.
Gabriel walked slowly down the stairs.
The detective kept his gun trained on him.
“You were working for my father.””
Gabriel nodded.
“For your father.””
“And my aunt?””
“For her too.””
Ricardo stared.
“How many sides are you on?””
Gabriel stopped several feet away.
“Whichever side is still standing.””
His mother spoke sharply.
“You've always been a coward.””
Gabriel looked at her.
“No. I've always been practical.””
“You helped them disappear people.””
“I helped people disappear.””
“That isn't the same thing.””
“It is when you're the one being hunted.””
Ricardo looked between them.
“You're wasting time.””
Gabriel nodded toward the monitors.
“Exactly.””
He pulled a remote control from his pocket.
The images changed.
Now Ricardo saw the hospital entrance.
Two men stood beside an ambulance.
Then the hallway.
Then Bia's mother.
Still alive.
Still frightened.
Then another screen.
A familiar road.
A black SUV.
Ricardo recognized it immediately.
“The car that followed us.””
Gabriel nodded.
“Your aunt has people everywhere.””
Clara looked at him.
“My people?””
Gabriel smiled.
“Not anymore.””
She stared at him.
“What did you do?””
“I stopped taking orders from you.””
Clara's face hardened.
“You don't have the courage.””
“I don't need courage.””
He pressed another button.
A recording played.
Clara's voice filled the room.
“Get Daniel before he reaches the police.””
Then another voice.
Gabriel.
“Understood.””
Ricardo's heart pounded.
He looked at Clara.
“You ordered it.””
Clara said nothing.
Gabriel continued playing.
“Do not let the mother escape.””
Ricardo's head snapped toward his mother.
Another voice appeared.
His father.
“Don't hurt Bia.””
Clara answered:
“If the child gets in the way, remove her.””
Ricardo's blood went cold.
He looked at his father.
“You knew.””
His father didn't deny it.
“Yes.””
“You knew she wanted Bia dead.””
“I stopped her.””
“When?””
“Too late.””
Ricardo pushed past him.
“You don't get to say that.””
His father caught his arm.
“Listen to me.””
Ricardo turned.
“You lied to me for twenty years.””
“Yes.””
“You let me think you were dead.””
“Yes.””
“You let Daniel die.””
His father's expression broke.
“I know.””
Ricardo pulled away.
“You don't get to ask me to listen.””
His mother stepped between them.
“Ricardo.””
He looked at her.
“Mom, what isn't he telling me?””
She stared at his father.
Then at Gabriel.
Then toward the screen showing Bia's mother.
Finally she whispered:
“Daniel was not working alone.””
Ricardo froze.
“Who was with him?””
His mother didn't answer.
“Who?””
Gabriel said quietly:
“Me.””
Ricardo stared at him.
“You helped Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you turn on him?””
“I didn't.””
“You were at the warehouse.””
“I was there to get him out.””
“What happened?””
Gabriel looked down.
“Your aunt arrived first.””
Ricardo glanced at Clara.
“She ordered the shooting.””
Gabriel nodded.
“I tried to stop it.””
“And my father?””
“He arrived afterward.””
Ricardo looked at his father.
“Why?””
“To stop the bleeding.””
“You were too late.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did everyone say it was an accident?””
His father looked toward the floor.
“Because we needed Daniel to disappear.””
Ricardo's voice became quieter.
“You made his murder look like an accident to protect yourselves.””
His father nodded.
“To protect the network.””
“And me?””
“To protect you.””
Ricardo shook his head.
“You keep using that word.””
His father looked at him.
“Because it was true.””
“No.””
Ricardo pointed toward Bia on the monitor.
“Protection is what you give someone when they have a choice.””
He looked at his father.
“You took every choice away from me.””
Silence.
Then the detective's radio suddenly crackled.
“Unit three, report.””
He answered immediately.
“Go ahead.””
A voice came through.
“We have a problem.””
“What kind?””
“The hospital has been compromised.””
Ricardo's heart stopped.
“Bia’s mother?””
“We lost visual.””
The detective looked at the screen.
The feed had gone black.
“What happened?””
“Power outage.””
Ricardo turned toward Gabriel.
“You knew this would happen.””
Gabriel nodded.
“I knew they would move.””
“Move where?””
“To the house.””
Ricardo stared.
“The house we're in?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because everyone believes the evidence is here.””
Ricardo looked around the hidden room.
Files.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Everything.
“But it isn't.””
“No.””
“Where is it?””
Gabriel looked at Bia.
“In the doll.””
Ricardo looked down.
The little girl held it against her chest.
“No.””
Gabriel nodded.
“Your mother knew they would search the house.””
“So she hid the original inside the toy.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she leave clues?””
“Because she needed you to find it before they did.””
Ricardo looked at Bia.
She was trembling.
He crouched beside her.
“Bia, your mommy put something inside your doll.””
Bia nodded.
“She told me not to give it to anyone.””
“I'm not asking you to.””
“I know.””
Ricardo held out his hand.
“Can I see it?””
She hesitated.
Then slowly handed him the doll.
Ricardo examined the stitching.
He found another zipper.
Inside was a tiny metal capsule.
His father inhaled sharply.
“That's it.””
Ricardo opened it.
A miniature flash drive fell into his palm.
Gabriel stepped forward.
“Don't plug it into anything.””
“Why?””
“Because they can track it.””
Ricardo stared at the drive.
“How do we read it?””
“Offline computer.””
His father pointed toward an old machine in the corner.
“That one.””
Ricardo carried the drive over.
He turned the computer on.
The system took several seconds to boot.
Everyone waited.
Gabriel stood by the stairs.
The detective watched him closely.
Helena stayed beside Bia.
Ricardo inserted the drive.
One folder appeared.
No password.
No encryption.
Just one file.
RICARDO.
He clicked it.
A video opened.
Daniel appeared on the screen.
He looked exhausted.
There was blood on his shirt.
Ricardo stopped breathing.
Daniel stared directly into the camera.
“If you're seeing this, then my plan failed.””
Ricardo leaned closer.
Daniel continued.
“Ricardo, there is something I never told you.””
His eyes shifted.
“If you found this, you've probably already heard lies about me.””
A painful smile crossed his face.
“I wasn't innocent.””
Ricardo looked down.
“I made mistakes.””
Daniel took a breath.
“But I never betrayed Bia.””
The room became silent.
“She is my daughter.””
Ricardo looked toward the child.
Daniel continued.
“Her mother is the only reason I kept fighting.””
The screen flickered.
“I need you to understand why I couldn't simply go to the police.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“The network had people inside the department.””
The detective's face tightened.
“I trusted one officer.””
Daniel continued.
“He promised to help.””
A name appeared on the screen.
RICARDO'S DETECTIVE.
The detective beside Ricardo went pale.
Ricardo slowly turned.
“What?””
The detective stepped backward.
“I didn't know.””
Daniel's voice continued.
“He betrayed me.””
The detective shook his head.
“That isn't true.””
Daniel continued.
“He gave my location to Clara.””
Clara smiled.
Ricardo turned toward her.
“You knew.””
She didn't answer.
The detective lowered his weapon.
“No.””
Ricardo stepped away from him.
“You're the one who called the police to the funeral.””
The detective's mouth opened.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everybody says that.””
“I swear.””
The video continued.
Daniel spoke again.
“The officer who betrayed me had a partner.””
Another name appeared.
Gabriel.
Ricardo turned.
Gabriel did not move.
“That was me,” he said.
“What?””
“I was the partner.””
The detective stared at him.
“You told me Daniel was dead.””
“I was ordered to.””
“You knew he was alive?””
“For three days.””
The detective looked horrified.
“Then why did you lie?””
Gabriel looked at Ricardo.
“Because Daniel asked me to.””
Ricardo frowned.
“What?””
“Daniel knew your father wanted to move him.””
“To where?””
Gabriel pointed toward the basement.
“Somewhere they couldn't find him.””
Ricardo looked at his father.
“You imprisoned my brother?””
His father shook his head.
“No.””
Gabriel said:
“He escaped before they could.””
Ricardo turned back to the screen.
Daniel's final words appeared.
“If anyone tries to tell you I died that night, don't believe them.””
Ricardo stopped breathing.
“What?””
The video continued.
“I survived.””
The screen cut to black.
Everyone stared at it.
Bia whispered:
“My daddy was alive?””
Her mother’s voice suddenly came from the hallway.
“Yes.””
Everyone turned.
The woman stood at the top of the stairs.
Alive.
Bleeding from the forehead.
She looked at Ricardo.
“Daniel survived that night.””
Ricardo rushed toward her.
“What happened to him?””
She looked at his father.
“He escaped.””
“Where did he go?””
She swallowed.
“He went to find your aunt.””
Clara's expression changed.
For the first time, fear replaced confidence.
Ricardo turned toward her.
“Where is my brother?””
Clara backed away.
“I don't know.””
“You're lying.””
“No.””
“You killed him.””
“I thought I did.””
Ricardo stared.
“You thought?””
Clara said nothing.
Then Bia's mother spoke.
“That's the secret.””
Ricardo turned toward her.
“What secret?””
She looked at the screen.
“Daniel was never the body in the coffin.””
Silence.
The entire room seemed to stop.
Ricardo whispered:
“Then whose body did I bury?””
Before anyone could answer, a phone rang.
Not Ricardo's.
Not the detective's.
Not Gabriel's.
It came from inside the wall.
Everyone looked toward it.
His father slowly walked to a hidden panel.
He opened it.
A phone was sitting inside.
Old.
Black.
Its screen showed one incoming call.
DANIEL.
Ricardo stared.
The phone kept ringing.
Then a voice came through the speaker before anyone touched it.
“Ricardo.””
His brother.
Alive.
“Don't trust anyone in that room.””
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
“And whatever you do, don't let them take Bia.””
The call ended.

Immediately, every light in the basement went out.
And this time, nobody knew who was standing in the darkness.
