Chapter 5: The Secret Buried in 2006

Frank didn't speak during the drive back to the clubhouse.

The words kept repeating in his head.

Frank Callahan knows what happened in 2006.

He knew exactly what had happened.

He had simply spent twenty years pretending it was over.

The Steel Ravens clubhouse sat behind an old repair garage on the edge of town. It wasn't fancy. There were mismatched chairs, a battered pool table, and photographs of club members who had passed away.

Frank had been a member since he was twenty-one.

Daniel had joined two years later.

Together, they had built something they believed would last forever.

Until 2006.

Until the night everything fell apart.

Ray parked beside Frank's motorcycle.

“You going to tell me what that message means?””

Frank removed his helmet.

“Not yet.””

“Frank.””

“I said not yet.””

Ray stared at him.

“We've been brothers for thirty years. If this involves something that could hurt Lily or Ethan, I need to know.””

Frank looked toward the clubhouse.

Then he sighed.

“Come inside.””

A few minutes later, Frank stood in front of an old photograph hanging above the fireplace.

It showed him and Daniel standing beside their first two motorcycles.

They were both smiling.

Neither had gray hair.

Neither had the scars that would come later.

“Back in 2006,” Frank began, “Daniel and I were involved in something we shouldn't have been.””

Ray sat down.

“What kind of something?””

“An accident.””

Frank rubbed his forehead.

“There was a young woman named Sarah. She worked at a private medical clinic. She came to Daniel because she believed someone at the clinic was hurting patients.””

Ray frowned.

“What patients?””

“People who couldn't defend themselves. People who had been placed in long-term care. Some were elderly.

Some were recovering from addiction. A few had no family.””

Frank paused.

“Sarah said the clinic was keeping people there illegally and stealing their money.””

Ray leaned forward.

“What happened?””

“Daniel wanted to investigate. I told him to stay out of it.””

“Why?””

“Because the clinic had powerful people behind it. Doctors, lawyers, business owners. People who could destroy the club if we got involved.””

Ray shook his head.

“That doesn't sound like Danny.””

“It wasn't. He went anyway.””

Frank stared at the photograph.

“One night, Daniel called me. He said he'd found evidence that the clinic was moving patients without authorization. He wanted me to help him get the records.””

“And you refused?””

Frank nodded.

“I told him to walk away.””

Ray was silent.

“Did he?””

“No.””

Frank's voice grew quieter.

“The next morning, Sarah was gone. The clinic said she'd stolen money and disappeared. Daniel said she had been taken somewhere. We argued.””

“How badly?””

“Badly enough that I told him if he brought that trouble near the club, he wasn't welcome anymore.””

Ray looked at the photograph.

“And then he disappeared.””

Frank nodded.

“Two days later, I received a phone call from a man claiming Daniel had been killed in a motorcycle accident.””

“Did you see a body?””

“No.””

“Did you see a report?””

Frank shook his head.

Ray leaned back.

“So you believed a phone call?””

“I wanted to believe it.””

For a long moment, neither man spoke.

Then Ray asked the question Frank had been avoiding.

“Was Emily connected to that clinic?””

“I don't know.””

“But she had Daniel's daughter.””

Frank looked at him.

“Apparently.””

Ray stood.

“Then maybe Emily found the same people Sarah was trying to expose.””

Before Frank could answer, his phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Just a photograph.

Frank opened it.

His blood ran cold.

It showed a little boy sitting on a metal chair in a dimly lit room.

Ethan.

His hands were tied loosely in front of him.

Beside him sat Emily Carter.

She looked exhausted, but she was alive.

A message appeared beneath the photograph.

*STOP LOOKING FOR THE CHILDREN. YOU HAVE ALREADY FAILED YOUR BROTHER ONCE. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AGAIN.*

Ray read it over Frank's shoulder.

“Call the detective.””

Frank was already dialing.

Detective Mitchell arrived at the clubhouse twenty minutes later.

She examined the photograph and immediately contacted the digital forensics team.

“Don't reply,” she instructed.

“Don't forward it. We need to preserve the original message.””

Frank paced the room.

“She's alive.””

“We can see that.””

“And Ethan's alive.””

“For now, yes.””

Frank stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Mitchell looked at him.

“It means whoever sent this wants you to believe they have control over both of them.””

“Then let's find out where they are.””

“We're working on it.””

Frank pointed at the photograph.

“Look at the room. There's a window behind them.””

Mitchell enlarged the image.

Ray moved closer.

“That's not a normal window.””

“What do you mean?”” Frank asked.

“Look at the metal frame. That's industrial glass. Could be a basement or an old institutional building.””

Frank leaned forward.

Then he noticed something.

A small red sticker on the wall.

He had seen that symbol before.

It was a white bird inside a red circle.

He walked to the filing cabinet and pulled out an old folder.

Inside were photographs from 2006.

He spread them across the table.

One showed the entrance to the old clinic.

The same red symbol was printed on a sign beside the door.

Ray stared.

“That's Willow Creek.””

Mitchell looked at Frank.

“Are you certain?””

“Positive.””

She immediately contacted the officers who had searched the property.

They confirmed that the main building was empty, but there was another structure behind it.

A detached service building.

Its entrance was hidden by overgrown bushes.

The search team hadn't entered because the structure appeared unsafe.

Mitchell ordered them to secure the area and wait for additional officers.

Frank grabbed his keys.

“I know the place.””

“You're not going alone,” Mitchell said.

“I'm not going anywhere until you tell me where Emily and Ethan are.””

“Then listen carefully. We have a possible location. But we need a warrant and proper backup.””

Frank clenched his jaw.

“How long?””

“I can't promise you a timeline.””

He looked at the photograph again.

Emily was holding Ethan's hand.

She was looking directly at the camera.

And on her wrist was a small silver bracelet.

Frank recognized it.

Daniel had given that bracelet to her.

The year before he disappeared.

At 2:15 a.m., a forensic analyst called Mitchell.

They had recovered location metadata from the photograph.

It hadn't been sent from Willow Creek.

It had been taken inside a building less than two miles away.

An old warehouse.

Registered to a company called Bell Medical Holdings.

Mitchell immediately pulled up the ownership records.

The company had been established seven years earlier.

Its registered director was listed as Marcus Bell.

The same man whose name appeared in Emily's notebook.

But Marcus Bell had supposedly been dead for seven years.

Frank stared at the paperwork.

“Someone is using a dead man's identity.””

Mitchell nodded.

“That's what it looks like.””

“Who?””

The analyst continued scrolling.

“There's another connection. The company was purchased through an offshore holding account. The original funding came from an insurance payout.””

Frank looked up.

“Whose insurance?””

The analyst hesitated.

Then answered.

“Sarah Whitmore.””

Frank felt the air leave his lungs.

Sarah.

The woman Daniel had tried to save in 2006.

The woman whose disappearance had destroyed his relationship with his brother.

Ray whispered.

“She was supposed to be dead.””

Mitchell turned toward Frank.

“Apparently, someone received money after she disappeared.””

Frank stared at the documents.

“Then what happened to Daniel?””

Nobody answered.

A second notification appeared on the analyst's computer.

It was an email recovered from an old account belonging to Emily.

The message had been sent three months earlier.

The subject line read:

*FRANK MUST KNOW THE TRUTH.*

Mitchell opened it.

There was only one attachment.

A scanned document.

At the top was a date.

November 2, 2006.

At the bottom were two signatures.

Daniel Callahan.

And Frank Callahan.

Frank stared at his own name.

He hadn't signed that document.

At least, he didn't remember signing it.

Mitchell zoomed in.

“Frank, do you recognize this?””

He leaned closer.

The document was a medical transfer authorization.

It stated that Sarah Whitmore had voluntarily agreed to be moved to a private facility.

Frank read the signature again.

Then he noticed the final paragraph.

It authorized the permanent transfer of Sarah's personal identity and financial assets to a third party.

The third party was listed as...

Dean Miller.

Frank stepped backward.

Dean hadn't simply entered their lives three months ago.

He had been connected to the same people for twenty years.

And suddenly, Frank understood why Daniel had been hiding.

He looked at Mitchell.

“Find Dean.””

She frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he didn't just take Emily's children.””

Frank pointed at the document.

“He's the reason my brother disappeared.””

Then the station phone rang.

Mitchell answered.

Her face changed.

She listened.

Then slowly hung up.

Frank approached.

“What?””

She looked at him.

“Dean Miller has been released.””

“What?””

“His lawyer produced new documents, and the prosecutor hasn't authorized charges yet.””

Frank's fists tightened.

Mitchell continued.

“But that's not the worst part.””

She placed another photograph on the table.

It showed Dean standing outside the police station.

He was holding a phone.

And on its screen was a photograph of Lily sleeping in her temporary accommodation.

Frank felt his blood turn cold.

Dean knew where she was.

May you like

And he had just sent them a message.

*YOU HAVE ONE CHILD. I HAVE THE OTHER TWO. CHOOSE CAREFULLY.*
