Chapter 10: The Father Who Never Died

Frank couldn't move.
For twenty-five years, he had believed his father was buried beneath a marble headstone in a cemetery outside town.
He remembered the funeral.
He remembered the priest.
He remembered Daniel standing beside him, holding their mother's hand.
And now the man standing at the end of the underground corridor was smiling at him.
Like nothing had happened.
“Hello, Frank.””
The voice was unmistakable.
Frank's father, Thomas Callahan, had a habit of speaking softly when he wanted people to be afraid.
He had used that voice when Frank was a child.
He had used it when Daniel broke his father's favorite watch.
And he was using it now.
Frank took one step forward.
“You're dead.””
Thomas smiled.
“Apparently, I've been very convincing.””
Daniel moved between them.
“Stay away from him.””
Thomas glanced at his younger son.
“Still playing the hero, Daniel? Twenty years, and you haven't learned anything.””
Frank looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
Daniel's face tightened.
“I found out in 2006.””
“You knew Dad was alive?””
“I found out he had faked his death. I didn't know where he was until much later.””
Frank's voice rose.
“And you never told me?””
“I tried!””
Thomas laughed.
“Your brother tried nothing. He was too busy stealing documents and pretending to be a savior.””
Detective Mitchell raised her weapon.
“Thomas Callahan, put your hands where I can see them.””
Thomas slowly lifted his hands.
“Detective, I wouldn't do that if I were you.””
“Turn around.””
He smiled.
“You really don't understand where you are, do you?””
A loud metallic bang echoed from the lower corridor.
Then another.
The lights flickered.
Thomas glanced toward the ceiling.
“Your officers are currently trapped behind the emergency doors. The security system has been programmed to seal this level whenever unauthorized access is detected.””
Mitchell spoke into her radio.
“Control, respond.””
Static.
Nothing.
Thomas adjusted his cufflinks.
“I'm afraid you're all going to have a very uncomfortable evening.””
Frank stepped forward.
“Where's Lily?””
Thomas looked at the photograph in his hand.
“Your little niece is a very important part of this arrangement.””
“She's thirteen.””
“And she's carrying information that could destroy everything I've built.””
Frank's jaw tightened.
“She's a child.””
Thomas shrugged.
“Children grow up. They learn to keep secrets.””
Daniel lunged.
Frank caught his arm.
“Don't.””
Thomas watched them.
“Always protecting each other. How touching.””
Then he turned toward Eleanor.
“Hello, Eleanor.””
Their mother shrank back in her wheelchair.
“No.””
Thomas approached.
“It's been a long time.””
“Stay away.””
Frank stepped between them.
“You're not going near her.””
Thomas's expression hardened.
“Your mother has always been difficult. Even now, she refuses to understand that everything I did was for this family.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“For the family? You stole her life!””
Thomas turned.
“I protected this family from ruin.””
“You declared her incompetent.””
“She was unstable.””
“You had her locked away!””
Thomas raised his voice.
“She threatened to expose me!””
The words hung in the corridor.
Mitchell looked at him.
“Thank you. That's an interesting admission.””
Thomas realized his mistake.
His expression changed.
“You people have no idea what you're dealing with.””
Mitchell kept her weapon raised.
“Then explain it.””
Thomas smiled again.
“Gladly.””
Twenty-five years earlier, Thomas Callahan had been involved in a private network of medical facilities.
The organization targeted vulnerable patients, especially those with significant savings, insurance policies, or property.
Patients were declared mentally incompetent.
Their assets were transferred.
Their families were told they had died, been relocated, or abandoned their previous lives.
Some were genuinely ill.
Others had been deliberately kept sedated.
Eleanor discovered the operation after noticing irregularities in the accounts of several patients.
She threatened to report everything.
Thomas arranged for her to be transferred.
Then he arranged his own disappearance.
His sons were told he had died.
Daniel discovered the truth in 2006.
He tried to expose his father.
But Thomas had forged Frank's signature on a transfer authorization, making Daniel believe his older brother was involved.
When Daniel refused to cooperate, Thomas threatened to destroy him.
Daniel disappeared to protect his family.
He had spent years collecting evidence.
And when Emily Carter discovered the original records, she became the next target.
Thomas listened while Daniel explained.
Then he smiled.
“You've made me sound like a monster.””
Frank stared at him.
“You stole our mother.””
“I kept her alive.””
“You stole twenty-five years.””
Thomas shrugged.
“Time is expensive.””
Frank stepped closer.
“You don't get to call yourself a father.””
For the first time, Thomas stopped smiling.
He reached inside his jacket.
Mitchell shouted.
“DON'T MOVE!””
Thomas pulled out a small remote control.
He pressed a button.
A red warning light began flashing above the corridor.
Daniel turned toward the control panel.
“Oh, no.””
Frank looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“He's opening the lower holding rooms.””
Thomas smiled.
“It's time for everyone to leave.””
A series of locks clicked.
Doors began opening.
From somewhere behind the walls came frightened voices.
Mitchell shouted into her radio.
“Emergency evacuation! We have multiple patients!””
Thomas stepped backward toward a side corridor.
Frank moved to stop him.
But Thomas pointed the remote toward Eleanor.
“Take one more step, Frank, and your mother goes back to sleep.””
Frank froze.
Thomas pressed another button.
A medical monitor beside Eleanor began beeping.
Daniel rushed toward it.
Thomas disappeared through the side door.
“DAD!””
The door slammed.
Mitchell ran after him.
Frank stayed beside Eleanor.
Her breathing had become rapid.
Daniel disconnected a small device from the medical equipment.
“Mom, look at me.””
She clutched his hand.
“He's coming back.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not this time.””
Frank looked toward the corridor.
“Where's Emily?””
Daniel pointed to the open security panel.
“There's a service tunnel behind that wall. They use it to move patients without passing through the main entrance.””
Frank grabbed his brother's shoulder.
“Then we're going to find her.””
Daniel nodded.
But before they could move, a young officer appeared at the corridor entrance.
“Detective Mitchell needs you!””
Frank turned.
“What happened?””
The officer looked terrified.
“Thomas escaped through the underground loading bay.””
“And?””
The officer swallowed.
“He took someone with him.””
Frank's stomach dropped.
“Who?””
May you like
The officer looked down at his radio.
“Lily Carter.””
