Chapter 11: The Girl Who Refused to Disappear

“WHERE IS MY NIECE?””

Frank's voice echoed through the underground corridor.

The young officer stepped backward.

“We're checking the exits.””

“Check faster!””

Daniel grabbed Frank's arm.

“Listen to me. Thomas won't hurt Lily immediately.””

Frank turned.

“How can you possibly know that?””

“Because he needs what she knows.””

“What does she know?””

Daniel looked toward Eleanor.

Their mother was trembling in the wheelchair.

Then he answered.

“She knows where Emily hid the original recording.””

Frank frowned.

“Lily has a recording?””

“Not just any recording. The last conversation between Thomas and Dean.””

Frank stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know she had it until yesterday.””

Daniel explained that Emily had discovered the original insurance fraud records hidden inside a collection of old voice messages.

She had copied everything onto a small memory card.

Then she divided the evidence between several people.

The bank records went to Sarah.

The medical ledger went to Daniel.

And the recording went to Lily.

Thomas had spent years trying to locate it.

“Why would Emily give something so important to a thirteen-year-old?”” Frank asked.

“Because nobody would suspect a child.””

Daniel paused.

“And because Lily knows something about that recording that nobody else does.””

Frank frowned.

“What?””

Daniel looked toward the stairwell.

“She knows the password.””

Detective Mitchell returned with two officers.

“Thomas has been located on a security camera near the eastern exit.””

Frank stepped forward.

“Where's Lily?””

“We don't know yet.””

“Then what are we waiting for?””

Mitchell held up her phone.

“We have a possible location. A vehicle matching his description was seen leaving the industrial property.””

Daniel examined the photograph.

“That's not his SUV.””

“No. It's a medical transport van.””

Daniel went pale.

“That's worse.””

Frank turned.

“Why?””

“Because there's another facility. An old rehabilitation center outside town. Thomas used it when he needed somewhere patients could be kept without attracting attention.””

Mitchell immediately called the operations team.

“What address?””

Daniel gave it to her.

Then he added something else.

“There's a basement entrance behind the laundry building.””

Mitchell nodded.

“Officers are being dispatched.””

Frank grabbed his keys.

“I'm coming.””

“Frank, we have a tactical team.””

“And I have a niece.””

Mitchell looked at him for a long moment.

“Then stay behind the team. Understood?””

Frank nodded.

Daniel reached for his arm.

“I'm coming too.””

Frank looked at his brother.

“You're not leaving again.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I know.””

At 12:47 a.m., the transport van arrived at the old rehabilitation center.

The building stood behind a row of abandoned warehouses.

Its windows were boarded up.

The sign above the entrance had almost completely fallen away.

A security light flickered over the parking lot.

The tactical team approached from two directions.

Frank and Daniel followed behind the officers.

Mitchell gave the signal.

They entered.

The reception area smelled of dust and disinfectant.

A wheelchair lay overturned beside the desk.

Frank noticed fresh footprints leading toward a staircase.

Daniel pointed.

“Basement.””

They descended.

At the bottom, they found a locked metal door.

A faint voice came from behind it.

“Please let me go.””

Frank recognized Lily immediately.

He rushed forward.

“Lily!””

“Frank?””

“I'm here, sweetheart!””

A man's voice interrupted.

“Stay where you are.””

Thomas stepped into view behind the narrow glass panel.

One hand held Lily's shoulder.

The other held a small black device.

Frank raised his hands.

“Let her go.””

Thomas smiled.

“You really don't listen, do you?””

“She's a child.””

“She has something that belongs to me.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You've taken enough from this family.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Daniel. My favorite disappointment.””

Daniel's fists tightened.

“Where's Emily?””

Thomas shrugged.

“Still alive. For now.””

Frank felt sick.

“What do you want?””

Thomas held up the device.

“The memory card.””

Lily began crying.

“I don't have it!””

Thomas tightened his grip.

“Don't lie.””

Frank looked at her.

“Sweetheart, listen to me. Whatever he's asking for, you don't have to be afraid.””

Thomas laughed.

“Don't encourage her.””

Daniel moved slightly to the left.

Thomas noticed.

“Stay where you are.””

Mitchell signaled her officers to hold position.

Frank kept his eyes on Lily.

“Remember what your mother told you?””

Lily nodded.

“She said to find the Steel Ravens.””

“And you did.””

Frank smiled gently.

“Now let us help you.””

Thomas's expression darkened.

“Enough.””

He pushed Lily toward a chair.

“Tell me the password.””

She shook her head.

“I don't know it.””

Thomas crouched in front of her.

“Your mother wrote it down.””

“No.””

“Your grandmother gave it to you.””

Lily began trembling.

“Stop talking about Grandma.””

Thomas grabbed her backpack.

He emptied it onto the floor.

A notebook fell out.

Then a photograph.

And finally, a small plastic bracelet.

Frank recognized it.

It was the bracelet from the photograph Emily had sent him.

Thomas picked it up.

“Where is the card?””

Lily stared at him.

Then she did something nobody expected.

She laughed.

It was a tiny, frightened laugh.

Thomas frowned.

“What's funny?””

“You still don't understand.””

“Understand what?””

Lily looked directly at him.

“My mom never gave me the card.””

Thomas went still.

“What?””

“She gave me something better.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

Frank understood immediately.

“The recording.””

Lily nodded.

Thomas grabbed her shoulders.

“Where is it?””

Lily looked toward the officers.

“It's already gone.””

Thomas's expression twisted.

“Who has it?””

Lily smiled through her tears.

“My grandma.””

At the mention of Margaret Carter, Thomas stepped backward.

Frank noticed.

For the first time that night, the man looked genuinely afraid.

Mitchell raised her voice.

“Thomas Callahan, release the child and step away.””

Thomas ignored her.

He turned toward Lily.

“What did you send her?””

Lily swallowed.

“Everything.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

“My mom told Grandma to send the recording if anything happened to us.””

Thomas looked toward the door.

He knew what that meant.

The evidence was no longer inside the facility.

It was somewhere beyond his control.

Mitchell moved closer.

“It's over.””

Thomas suddenly reached for Lily's backpack.

Daniel lunged.

The two men collided against the wall.

The black device fell to the floor.

Officers rushed forward.

Thomas fought violently, striking one officer in the face before two others forced him down.

“Get off me!””

Mitchell secured his wrists.

“You're under arrest.””

Thomas looked toward Frank.

“You think this ends anything?””

Frank stepped forward.

“No. I think it finally begins.””

Lily ran into Frank's arms.

He held her tightly.

“I'm sorry,” she sobbed.

“I tried to be brave.””

Frank kissed the top of her head.

“You don't have to be brave every second, sweetheart.””

Daniel approached.

Lily looked up.

For a moment, she simply stared at him.

Then she asked:

“Are you my dad?””

Daniel's face crumpled.

He knelt.

“Yes.””

She hesitated.

“Why didn't you come home?””

Daniel couldn't answer immediately.

Then he whispered:

“Because I thought staying away was the only way to keep you safe.””

Lily looked at him.

“Mom waited for you.””

Daniel began crying.

“I know.””

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

Frank turned away.

He had never seen his brother cry like that.

An officer approached Mitchell.

“Detective, we have another problem.””

Mitchell looked up.

“What now?””

“We recovered a phone from Thomas's vehicle. There's a message from an unknown sender.””

“Show me.””

The officer handed her the device.

The message contained a single sentence.

*THE RECORDING ISN'T THE ONLY COPY. THE ORIGINAL IS WITH THE WOMAN IN ROOM 17.*

Mitchell frowned.

“But Room 17 was Emily's room.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

“No.””

Frank turned.

“What?””

Daniel pointed at the message.

“That's not Emily's room.””

He swallowed.

“Room 17 was the room where Sarah Whitmore disappeared in 2006.””

Frank stared at him.

“Then whose room did we open?””

Daniel looked toward the facility.

“Someone else's.””

His phone suddenly rang.

The caller ID displayed an unknown number.

He answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

“Daniel, it's Sarah.””

“Where are you?””

“Listen carefully. Thomas has been arrested, but his father is still alive.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“That's impossible.””

Sarah's voice broke.

“No, Danny. You arrested the wrong man.””

Then the call ended.

And a photograph arrived.

It showed Thomas Callahan sitting inside the police transport vehicle.

But the man in the photograph had a different face.

Frank stared.

The man they had just arrested wasn't Thomas.

May you like

It was someone wearing a realistic disguise.

And the real Thomas had been standing beside them all along.
