Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Mask
The countdown kept moving.
Nine minutes.
Eight.
Every second felt louder than the last.
Officer Brooks connected equipment from his vehicle and started copying files from the old computer.
Ray stood beside him.
Watching.
Waiting.
Sam walked around the room.
Looking at everything.
Like he was searching for something.
“What are you looking for?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
Then he stopped.
A small metal cabinet sat in the corner.
Locked.
Sam walked toward it.
Ray noticed.
“What’s inside?””
Sam stared at the cabinet.
“The reason Michael died.””
Ray stepped forward.
Sam pulled out the key.
The same key.
The cabinet opened.
Inside was a single box.
No papers.
No files.
Just one helmet.
An old helmet.
Black.
Covered in scratches.
Ray froze.
“That’s…”
Sam nodded.
“Yes.””
Ray couldn’t finish the sentence.
Because he knew.
It was Michael’s helmet.
The helmet from the crash.
The helmet everyone believed had been destroyed.
Ray reached toward it.
But stopped.
He couldn’t touch it.
Not yet.
Sam looked at him.
“I kept it because I knew someday you would need to see it.””
Ray swallowed.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
“Because I didn’t have proof.””
Sam opened the helmet.
Inside was the same hidden seam.
The same modification.
The same design.
But this time…
There was something else.
A small recording device.
Officer Brooks stared.
“What is that?””
Sam carefully removed it.
“A confession.””
Ray looked confused.
“Whose?””
Before Sam could answer, the lights went out.
The room went completely dark.
Someone had cut the power.
Officer Brooks pulled out his flashlight.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
Then we heard footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Walking across the gravel outside.
Ray moved toward the door.
“No.””
Sam stopped him.
“Don’t.””
But Ray opened it anyway.
Standing outside was a man.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive jacket.
Calm expression.
A man who looked nothing like a criminal.
A man who looked like someone people trusted.
Daniel Voss.
Ray stared.
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Then Ray whispered:
“You’re alive.””
Daniel smiled.
“I was wondering when you’d figure it out.””
The anger inside Ray exploded.
“You killed him.””
Daniel didn’t deny it.
Instead, he looked tired.
“Michael was always curious.””
Ray stepped forward.
“You murdered my brother.””
Daniel sighed.
“I saved a company.””
Those words were worse than an admission.
Because they showed he didn’t regret it.
Not even a little.
Officer Brooks raised his weapon.
“Daniel Voss, step away.””
Daniel smiled.
“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””
“I know enough.””
Daniel looked at him.
“No. You know one dead man.””
He pointed toward Ray.
“You don’t know the hundreds of lives protected by keeping the truth hidden.””
Ray stared.
“You’re insane.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I’m practical.””
He looked at the old helmet.
“People don’t understand how the world works.””
Ray’s voice was low.
“They trusted you.””
Daniel looked away.
“That was their mistake.””
The silence that followed was unbearable.
Then Daniel said something that changed everything.
“Your brother wasn’t my only mistake.””
Ray narrowed his eyes.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel smiled.
“It means tonight wasn’t supposed to happen.””
He looked directly at Ray.
“The helmet was supposed to kill you before you ever reached this place.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel continued.
“But Sam ruined that.””
Sam stared at him.
“You knew I would see it.””
“Yes.””
Daniel smiled.
“That was the interesting part.””
Ray looked confused.
“What?””
Daniel took a step back.
“You think Sam saved you.””
He looked at Ray.
“But you don’t know what he really did.””
Everyone turned toward Sam.
For the first time all night…
Sam looked afraid.
Daniel smiled.
“Tell him, Samuel.””
The countdown on the computer reached zero.
The screen went black.
And Sam Reed lowered his eyes.
May you like
Because whatever secret Daniel was talking about…
Was something even Ray didn’t know.
