Chapter 2: The Secret Under The Lining

Officer Daniel Brooks arrived with his partner less than two minutes later.

By then, the crowd had doubled.

Everyone had a different version of what happened.

Some said Ray attacked Sam.

Some said Sam was crazy.

Some said a biker almost killed a homeless man over a helmet.

Nobody understood what actually happened.

Except three people.

Me.

Ray.

And Sam Reed.

Officer Brooks looked around.

“Who owns the motorcycle?””

Ray raised his hand.

“That would be me.””

Brooks looked at the broken helmet on the ground.

“What happened?””

Before Ray answered, several people started talking at once.

“He assaulted that man!””

“The homeless guy destroyed his helmet!””

“The biker grabbed him!””

Brooks held up his hand.

“One at a time.””

Then he looked at Ray.

“Your story.””

Ray pointed at Sam.

“He broke my helmet.””

Brooks nodded.

“And why?””

Ray looked at Sam.

That was the moment I realized something.

Ray wasn’t angry anymore.

He was listening.

“He says someone put something inside it.””

Brooks looked skeptical.

“Inside the helmet?””

“Yes.””

Sam slowly stood.

The officer studied him.

“You have identification?””

Sam reached into his coat and pulled out an old wallet.

His hands shook.

Not from fear.

From exhaustion.

Brooks checked the ID.

“Samuel Reed.””

Sam nodded.

“Can I see the helmet?””

Ray hesitated.

Then handed over the broken pieces.

Brooks carefully examined them.

“You’re saying someone tampered with this?””

Sam stepped closer.

“Look at the inside seam.””

Brooks held the helmet under his flashlight.

At first, I saw nothing.

Then he noticed it.

A tiny cut.

Almost invisible.

The officer’s expression changed.

“What is that?””

Sam answered quietly.

“A hidden compartment.””

Brooks opened his radio.

“Request evidence unit.””

The crowd immediately became louder.

People wanted answers.

They wanted a story.

They wanted someone to blame.

But I only cared about one thing.

Why did a homeless man know enough about a motorcycle helmet to find something hidden inside it?

I looked at Sam.

And for the first time, I wondered if we had all been wrong about him.

Maybe he wasn’t just a man sleeping behind a bus station.

Maybe he was someone hiding.

Brooks looked at him.

“Mr. Reed, how did you know about this?””

Sam didn’t answer.

The officer repeated the question.

“How did you know?””

Sam looked at Ray.

Then at me.

Then back at the helmet.

“Because I have seen this before.””

Ray stepped forward.

“What do you mean?””

Sam’s face became serious.

“Two years ago, a man died wearing a helmet with the same modification.””

Silence.

Ray’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Sam looked at him.

“Your brother.””

The street went completely still.

I felt like the air had been knocked out of me.

Ray’s brother had died in a motorcycle accident.

Everyone knew that.

But nobody talked about it.

Ray never talked about it.

“That’s impossible,” Ray whispered.

Sam shook his head.

“No. It was covered up.””

Ray moved closer.

“You better explain yourself.””

Sam looked around.

Not at the police.

Not at the crowd.

At the person who had walked away earlier.

“He wasn’t supposed to die.””

Ray’s jaw tightened.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying someone has been testing this for years.””

Brooks immediately became more serious.

“Testing what?””

Sam looked at the broken helmet.

“Something that kills riders without leaving obvious evidence.””

The officer stepped closer.

“Are you saying this helmet was designed to kill him?””

Sam nodded.

“Yes.””

Ray looked sick.

“But why me?””

Sam didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into his backpack.

The crowd moved backward.

Brooks placed his hand near his weapon.

“What’s in the bag?””

Sam slowly pulled out a folder.

Old.

Dirty.

Filled with papers.

He handed it to Ray.

Ray opened it.

I watched his face change page by page.

First confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then anger.

“What is this?””

Sam whispered.

“The reason your brother died.””

Ray looked at the documents.

I couldn’t see everything.

But I saw one thing.

A photograph.

A motorcycle.

A crash scene.

And underneath it…

A name.

A name Ray recognized.

A name that made his hands start shaking.

“Who gave you this?”” Ray asked.

Sam looked toward the dark street.

“The same person who put the powder inside your helmet.””

The police officer stepped forward.

“Mr. Reed, are you telling us you know who did this?””

Sam nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Sam opened his mouth.

But before he could answer…

A motorcycle engine roared from the end of the street.

Everyone turned.

A black truck accelerated away from the curb.

The person inside had been waiting.

Watching.

Listening.

And now escaping.

Ray stared after it.

Then looked down at the broken helmet.

Because on the inside edge of the shattered lining…

There was one final thing nobody had noticed.

A small symbol.

Burned into the material.

A mark that connected the helmet…

May you like

His brother’s death…

And a mystery that had been buried for years.
