Chapter 4: The Replacement Helmet
The police moved quickly after Sam’s warning.
Officer Brooks pushed everyone away from the motorcycle.
He called for additional units.
The crowd finally started disappearing.
But Ray didn’t move.
He stood beside his Harley, staring at the broken helmet sitting on the pavement.
I knew what he was thinking.
The same thing I was thinking.
How many times had he worn it?
How many miles had he ridden with a death trap sitting on his head?
Ray picked up the helmet piece.
His hands were shaking.
Not from fear.
From rage.
“I trusted this thing.””
Sam watched him.
“It wasn’t the helmet’s fault.””
Ray looked at him.
“No?””
“No.””
Sam looked down.
“Someone made it a weapon.””
Those words stayed with me.
A weapon.
That was exactly what it was.
Someone had turned protection into a trap.
Officer Brooks came back.
“Mr. Dawson, I need you to come with us.””
Ray shook his head.
“Not yet.””
“Sir—”
“I need answers.””
Brooks looked at him.
“You may get them. But standing here waiting for whoever did this to return is not the smartest move.””
Ray stared at him.
Then slowly nodded.
“Fine.””
But before anyone could move, Sam grabbed Ray’s arm.
“Don’t ride tonight.””
Ray looked down.
“What?””
“Don’t ride.””
“I have a replacement helmet.””
Sam’s expression changed.
“No.””
Ray frowned.
“What do you mean, no?””
Sam looked terrified.
“Don’t put on any helmet tonight unless I inspect it.””
Ray stared.
“You think they could have gotten another one?””
Sam didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
That was the answer.
Someone had planned this.
Someone had access.
Someone was close enough to know Ray’s routine.
The replacement helmet sitting inside Dawson Cycle suddenly didn’t feel safe anymore.
I looked at Ray.
“You have another helmet?””
He nodded.
“In the office.””
Sam immediately said:
“Bring it out.””
Ray hesitated.
Then walked inside.
A minute later, he returned carrying a new helmet still inside the original box.
Sam took it carefully.
He didn’t open it immediately.
Instead, he studied the packaging.
The label.
The seal.
The barcode.
His eyes narrowed.
“What?””
Ray asked.
Sam pointed.
“The box was opened.””
Ray frowned.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Sam turned it over.
“Look at the tape.””
I stepped closer.
At first, I saw nothing.
Then I noticed it.
A tiny difference.
The factory tape had been cut.
Then resealed.
Someone had opened the box.
Someone had touched the helmet.
Ray’s face became completely emotionless.
“Who?””
Sam looked at him.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
Officer Brooks immediately took the helmet.
“Evidence.””
Ray didn’t argue.
That surprised me.
Usually, Ray fought everyone.
But tonight he understood.
This was bigger than pride.
Bigger than anger.
This was survival.
A few minutes later, another police unit arrived.
But something bothered me.
Something I couldn’t explain.
I kept thinking about the person who drove away in the black truck.
The person who watched.
The person who knew exactly when to disappear.
I walked around the side of the building.
And that was when I saw it.
A small object near the curb.
I bent down.
It was a cigarette lighter.
Black metal.
Engraved with the same symbol.
The Blackridge symbol.
My heart started pounding.
Because whoever left it behind had been standing right there.
Watching us.
Listening.
Close enough to hear every word.
I called Ray.
He walked over.
When he saw the lighter, his face changed.
“Where did you find that?””
“Right here.””
He picked it up.
Then immediately dropped it.
“What?””
Ray looked at me.
“That belonged to my brother.””
The world seemed to stop.
“What?””
“I gave it to him before he died.””
He stared at the lighter.
“I watched him carry it every day.””
Officer Brooks approached.
“What’s wrong?””
Ray looked at the evidence on the ground.
Then at Sam.
Then back toward the dark street.
“My brother’s killer was here.””
Nobody said anything.
Because there was only one possibility.
The person responsible for Michael Dawson’s death had returned.
And this time…
They weren’t trying to hide the evidence.
They were sending a message.
A message meant only for Ray.
A message that said:
May you like
I know you’re looking.
And I’m not afraid.
