Chapter 6: The Truth Behind The Iron Vipers

The first thing I heard was the sound of footsteps.

Slow.

Controlled.

Not someone running.

Not someone panicking.

Someone who knew exactly where they were going.

I reached for the flashlight on the table.

Ethan whispered:

“Don’t.””

I stopped.

“Why?””

“Because they want you to know they’re here.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means they’re sending a message.””

A sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Then closing.

Rex stood beside me.

Every hair on his back raised.

I had seen that reaction only a handful of times.

Every time had ended badly.

“Stay,” I whispered.

Rex looked at me.

For a second, I saw the old Rex.

The young dog who ran beside soldiers.

The animal who trusted commands.

Then I saw the years.

The scars.

The experience.

He wasn’t waiting for permission.

He was making a decision.

The motel room door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

A voice came from the other side.

“Captain.””

I froze.

Nobody called me that anymore.

Nobody.

The voice continued.

“You’ve spent nine years looking for answers.””

My hand tightened.

“Who are you?””

Silence.

Then:

“Someone who was there.””

Ethan looked terrified.

Not nervous.

Terrified.

That told me more than words.

The door opened slightly.

But nobody entered.

A small envelope slid across the floor.

Then the footsteps disappeared.

I waited.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

Then I opened the door.

The hallway was empty.

I picked up the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Three words.

COME ALONE.

Underneath was an address.

I looked at Ethan.

“No.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“You’re coming.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because whoever sent that message knows me.””

“And?””

“And they want you alone because they’re afraid of what happens if Rex is with you.””

I looked down at my dog.

That made no sense.

Unless they knew.

Unless they understood what Rex really was.

I folded the paper.

“We’re going.””

Ethan grabbed my arm.

“Listen to me.””

I looked at him.

“If this is who I think it is…”

“Who?””

His face went pale.

“The person who ordered Daniel’s death.””

The address led us to an abandoned warehouse outside town.

The kind of place people forgot existed.

Broken windows.

Rusting metal.

No lights.

No signs.

But there were motorcycles parked outside.

Six of them.

Iron Vipers.

I looked at Ethan.

“They’re here.””

“Yes.””

We walked inside.

Breaker was waiting.

Alone.

No vest.

No attitude.

Just a tired man standing beneath a broken light.

“You came.””

I stared.

“You knew I would.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked at Rex.

“Because he came with you.””

My jaw tightened.

“You knew him.””

Breaker nodded.

“I knew Daniel too.””

The words hit.

“You better start talking.””

Breaker looked at the ground.

“Nine years ago, we were soldiers.””

I said nothing.

“My men and I were assigned to protect a supply route.””

“And?””

“And we discovered something we weren’t supposed to.””

“The network.””

Breaker nodded.

“Daniel found it first.””

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because everyone we trusted was involved.””

I felt the anger rise.

“You knew Daniel was going to die.””

Breaker looked away.

“Yes.””

The answer shocked me.

“You knew?””

“I tried to stop it.””

“But you failed.””

“Yes.””

The honesty almost made it worse.

I stepped closer.

“Why hide?””

“Because after Daniel died, the people responsible started cleaning everything.””

“Meaning?””

“Witnesses disappeared.””

“Reports changed.””

“Names were erased.””

I looked at Rex.

“And Daniel?””

Breaker swallowed.

“He left the truth with the only partner he trusted.””

Rex.

A noise came from the darkness.

A slow clap.

Everyone turned.

A man stepped out from the shadows.

Older.

Calm.

Wearing no uniform.

No colors.

No tattoos.

Just a smile.

“I was wondering when you would finally understand.””

Breaker’s face changed.

“Grant.””

The man smiled.

“Thomas.””

I looked between them.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rex growled.

And for the first time since I had known him…

He backed away.

Not from fear.

From recognition.

The man smiled at Rex.

“Still remembers me.””

My blood turned cold.

Because Rex remembered everyone.

But he only reacted like that to enemies.

Grant looked at me.

“You want the truth about Daniel?””

He smiled.

“Then ask your dog.””

I stared.

“What?””

Grant stepped closer.

“Because Rex was there when your best friend discovered the truth.””

He paused.

“And Rex was there when Daniel made his final decision.””

The warehouse became silent.

Then Grant whispered:

“Daniel didn’t die protecting you.””

My heart stopped.

“He died protecting Rex.””

May you like

And suddenly…

Everything I believed about that night began to collapse.
