Chapter 10: The Truth Rex Carried Home

For nine years, I believed the hardest thing I would ever do was say goodbye to Daniel.

I was wrong.

The hardest thing was hearing his voice again.

Not in a dream.

Not in a memory.

Not in the quiet moments when my mind played tricks on me.

A real voice.

Alive.

Coming through my phone.

“You weren’t supposed to find me yet.””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Every emotion I had buried for nine years came rushing back at once.

Anger.

Relief.

Confusion.

Pain.

I looked at Rex.

The old soldier was staring at me like he already knew.

Of course he knew.

Rex had known everything.

The truth had been sitting beside me every day.

Sleeping beside me.

Walking beside me.

Waiting for me to finally understand.

“Daniel?””

My voice cracked.

There was silence on the other end.

Then a breath.

A real breath.

“Yeah.””

I closed my eyes.

For a second, I was back on that battlefield.

Back in the dirt.

Back holding him.

Back believing I had lost him.

“You’re alive.””

“I am.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?””

Another pause.

“Not safe.””

That answer sounded exactly like Daniel.

Even after nine years.

Still protecting everyone else.

Still carrying the weight alone.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I had to.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You chose to.””

The silence hurt.

Because I knew him.

And I knew when silence meant guilt.

“I’m sorry.””

Two words.

But they carried nine years of pain.

I looked around the room.

Breaker.

Ethan.

Everyone was watching me.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

“What happened that day?””

Daniel exhaled slowly.

“Grant found out I had the files.””

My jaw tightened.

“And Hale?””

Another pause.

That was all the answer I needed.

“He was involved.””

I looked down.

Even after everything, hearing it from Daniel hurt.

“He was our commander.””

“I know.””

“He trained me.””

“I know.””

“He was family.””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“That’s why it hurt.””

I looked at Rex.

Because that was the part nobody understood.

Betrayal from an enemy was expected.

Betrayal from someone you trusted?

That was a different kind of wound.

“What about you?””

I asked.

“How did you survive?””

Daniel was quiet for a moment.

Then:

“Because Rex saved me.””

I swallowed.

Of course.

The answer was always Rex.

“The explosion wasn’t what killed me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I was injured. Badly. But alive.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Then why didn’t you come back?””

“Because I saw who was coming.””

The room went silent.

“I saw Grant.””

Daniel continued.

“I saw Hale’s people.””

I closed my eyes.

“They weren’t there to rescue us.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“They were there to erase us.””

I looked at Rex.

“The collar.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I’d keep it.””

“I knew you’d keep him.””

That hurt more.

Because Daniel knew me better than anyone.

“You left me alone.””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I left you alive.””

I didn’t respond.

Because deep down…

I understood.

Daniel wasn’t choosing to abandon me.

He was trying to keep me from becoming another name on a list.

“Where are you now?””

“I can’t tell you.””

I almost laughed.

After everything.

After nine years.

Still secrets.

But then he said something that stopped me.

“Because I’m not the only one who survived.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Then Rex suddenly stood.

He looked toward the warehouse door.

Every person in the room noticed.

Everyone knew that look.

Danger.

Daniel heard it.

“Is Rex with you?””

“Yes.””

A quiet breath.

“Good.””

“Why?””

“Because he remembers the last person.””

“What person?””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“The person who betrayed us.””

The warehouse lights flickered.

Everyone turned.

A shadow moved outside.

Breaker reached for his weapon.

Ethan stepped back.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Daniel?””

No answer.

Only static.

Then one final sentence.

“Don’t trust anyone wearing our uniform.””

The call ended.

The door exploded inward.

And standing in the entrance was a man I never expected to see again.

Colonel Richard Hale.

Older.

Gray hair.

Same eyes.

Same calm expression.

The same man who taught me how to survive.

The same man who destroyed everything.

He looked at Rex.

Then at me.

And smiled.

“After all these years…”

He stepped inside.

“You finally brought the truth home.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

But Rex did.

The old war dog stepped forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

And for the first time since I had known him…

He showed his teeth.

Because Rex remembered.

May you like

And now…

So did I.
