Chapter 13: The File That Could Destroy Everything

The fake psychological evaluation sat on my hospital tray for several minutes before anyone spoke.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to say what we were all thinking.

Because saying it out loud made it real.

My father had not reacted to my pregnancy.

He had reacted before my son was even born.

He had prepared before there was a problem.

He had created the problem.

I stared at the signature at the bottom of the report.

Dr. Amelia Ward.

The name felt familiar.

Too familiar.

“Who is she?”” Daniel asked.

I swallowed.

“She was my father’s recommendation.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“I knew it.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She looked ashamed.

“I knew he had someone.””

“Someone?””

“A doctor.””

The room went silent.

My anger came back instantly.

“You knew my father was creating a medical file about me?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“I knew he was trying to find someone who would support his story.””

I looked at the document again.

A fake diagnosis.

A fake evaluation.

A fake version of me.

It was terrifying how easy it was to turn a person into a stranger on paper.

“Can this be stopped?””

Daniel looked at the administrator.

She shook her head carefully.

“Not automatically.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your father has created enough paperwork to force a legal review.””

“So even fake evidence can hurt me?””

The administrator looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

That was the most frightening part.

The truth did not always arrive first.

Sometimes the lie got a head start.

My son moved slightly in his bassinet.

A tiny sound.

A reminder.

Everything happening in that room was about him.

I reached out and touched his hand.

“I won’t let him take you.””

My mother looked at me.

And something changed in her expression.

Not sadness.

Pride.

Like she was seeing the daughter she had always hoped I would become.

The detective returned that afternoon.

This time, he brought another officer.

“We found something.””

My heart immediately tightened.

“About my father?””

The detective nodded.

“About the evaluation.””

He placed a folder on the table.

“We contacted Dr. Ward.””

I leaned forward.

“And?””

“She denies performing the evaluation.””

Nobody spoke.

The room became completely still.

“She denies it?””

The detective nodded.

“She says she has never met you.””

I stared at the fake report.

“Then how did my father get her signature?””

“We are investigating.””

Daniel looked at the document.

“Someone forged it.””

“Yes.””

The detective looked at me.

“And that person may have committed multiple crimes.””

For the first time since this nightmare began, I felt something other than fear.

Hope.

Because this was no longer just a family argument.

This was evidence.

Real evidence.

My father’s carefully built story was starting to collapse.

But then the detective said:

“There’s something else.””

I already hated those words.

“What?””

He opened another file.

“We found financial records connected to your father.””

My mother went pale.

“What kind of records?””

“Payments.””

“To who?””

The detective looked at me.

“Several people.””

My stomach dropped.

“People involved in this?””

“Yes.””

He pointed to the names.

Hospital employee.

Private investigator.

Medical consultant.

And one more name.

My hands froze.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because I recognized the final name.

It belonged to someone who had been sitting beside me for years.

Someone who had hugged me at my wedding.

Someone who had held my hand when I told her I was pregnant.

Someone I never imagined would betray me.

“My father paid her?””

The detective nodded.

“According to these records.””

My mother whispered:

“Who?””

I looked at them.

And the answer barely came out.

“My best friend.””

The room went quiet.

Her name was Olivia.

She had been my closest friend since college.

She knew everything about me.

My fears.

My insecurities.

My relationship with my parents.

My pregnancy.

My marriage.

Everything.

She knew exactly where to hurt me.

Daniel looked shocked.

“Are you sure?””

The detective nodded.

“The payments began six months ago.””

Six months.

Around the time I told Olivia I was pregnant.

Around the time my father started becoming unusually interested in my life again.

I felt sick.

All those conversations.

All those moments.

Was she collecting information?

Was every “How are you feeling?”” actually an investigation?

The phone in my hand suddenly felt heavy.

I opened my messages.

Scrolled back.

And there it was.

A conversation from months ago.

Olivia asking:

*Have your parents mentioned anything about custody or guardianship?*

At the time, I thought it was a strange question.

Now I knew.

It wasn’t curiosity.

It was preparation.

My mother touched my arm.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because you are learning the same lesson I learned.””

“What lesson?””

She looked at the people around me.

“That the people closest to you are sometimes the easiest people for someone else to use.””

I looked at my sleeping son.

And I made a decision.

No more secrets.

No more trusting blindly.

No more letting people control the story of my life.

If my father wanted a war…

May you like

Then I would stop defending myself.

I would expose him.
