Chapter 11: The Person Behind the Hospital Doors

The investigation changed everything.

Before that moment, my father’s attacks felt personal.

A family battle.

A damaged relationship.

A cruel attempt by a controlling parent to take over my life.

But now it was something bigger.

Someone had been helping him.

Someone had access.

Someone was willing to break rules to hurt me.

The detective remained in my room for nearly an hour.

He asked questions.

Simple questions.

But each one felt heavy.

“Did you give your father permission to access your medical information?””

“No.””

“Did you authorize anyone else?””

“No.””

“Did you request changes to your son’s records?””

“No.””

“Have you ever expressed that you did not want custody of your child?””

“No.””

Every answer felt like rebuilding myself.

Piece by piece.

Because my father’s strategy was clear.

He was not trying to prove something true.

He was trying to create enough doubt.

Enough confusion.

Enough suspicion.

People don’t need proof to judge you.

Sometimes they only need a story.

After the detective left, Daniel stood by the window.

“He’s getting desperate.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he’s losing control.””

My mother nodded.

“That’s when he becomes dangerous.””

The word stayed with me.

Dangerous.

Not angry.

Not upset.

Dangerous.

I looked at her.

“You really believe that?””

She looked at me sadly.

“I spent thirty years learning it.””

Later that afternoon, the hospital administrator returned.

This time, she brought documents.

“We identified the unauthorized access.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She placed the papers down.

A name.

A department.

A position.

I read it.

Then I froze.

“No.””

Daniel looked over.

“What?””

I handed him the paper.

His expression changed.

“Impossible.””

The person was not a stranger.

Not someone random.

It was someone connected to my family.

Someone I had trusted.

My father’s personal assistant.

A woman named Claire.

She had worked for him for eight years.

She had attended family dinners.

She had sent me birthday gifts.

She had helped organize my wedding.

“She did this?””

The administrator nodded.

“She accessed records using authorized credentials.””

“Why?””

“We don’t know yet.””

My mother looked at the name.

Then she whispered:

“Claire.””

There was something in her voice.

Recognition.

Fear.

“You know something.””

My mother looked away.

“Mom.””

She sighed.

“Claire wasn’t just your father’s assistant.””

“What else?””

“She was his closest confidante.””

Daniel frowned.

“Meaning?””

“My father trusted her more than anyone.””

I stared at the papers.

“So she helped him.””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I almost didn’t pick up.

But something told me I needed to.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

“Rosa?””

I froze.

I recognized it.

“Claire?””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“You accessed my records.””

Silence.

“I know.””

“You helped my father.””

Another pause.

“I did what I thought was right.””

I felt anger rise.

“You helped someone try to take my child.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then explain.””

She was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Your father is not telling you everything.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Why should I believe you?””

She took a breath.

“Because I know what he did five years ago.””

My heart stopped.

Again.

Five years.

That phrase was becoming a ghost haunting every corner of my life.

“What happened five years ago?””

Claire hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Your father didn’t hire Daniel to investigate your family.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He hired Daniel to investigate someone else.””

“Who?””

Her answer came softly.

“Your mother.””

I looked at my mother.

She had heard.

Her face went pale.

“No.””

Claire continued.

“And when Daniel found out the truth, your father tried to destroy him.””

My head spun.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel discovered the one thing your father has spent years hiding.””

“What?””

Claire’s voice dropped.

“He wasn’t protecting the family.””

She paused.

“He was protecting himself.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Then my mother whispered:

“Your father is going to know I told you.””

I looked at her.

“You haven’t told me anything yet.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

May you like

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But I think it’s time.””
