Chapter 5: The Truth Hailey Was Never Supposed To Know

The following week changed everything.

Marcus hired an attorney.

Not because he wanted a fight.

Because he needed protection.

The fake documents were serious.

The missing letter was serious.

And the fact that someone had attempted to change ownership of the house was something he could not ignore.

Nia watched the adults make phone calls and organize paperwork.

But she felt strangely disconnected.

Her entire life had shifted in a matter of days.

The house she thought belonged to Rebecca.

The home where she thought she was just a guest.

Had always been hers.

But instead of feeling happy, she felt exhausted.

Because every room now carried a question.

What else had she not known?

One afternoon, she found Hailey sitting alone outside.

For once, Hailey wasn’t angry.

She looked scared.

Nia almost walked away.

Then Hailey spoke.

“I didn’t know.””

Nia stopped.

“What?””

Hailey looked down.

“I didn’t know she was trying to take the house.””

Nia said nothing.

Hailey continued.

“She told me your dad had changed everything.””

Nia crossed her arms.

“And you believed her?””

Hailey looked embarrassed.

“Yes.””

A long silence followed.

Then Hailey said something Nia didn’t expect.

“I was jealous of you.””

Nia looked at her.

Hailey laughed quietly.

“That sounds horrible.””

“It does.””

Hailey nodded.

“I know.””

She picked at the grass.

“Everyone loved you.””

Nia almost responded.

But Hailey continued.

“They talked about how strong you were after your mom died. How mature you were. How your mom was amazing.””

Her voice became smaller.

“And I felt invisible.””

Nia looked away.

She understood feeling forgotten.

But understanding wasn’t forgiveness.

“You hurt me.””

Hailey nodded.

“I know.””

“You threw away things I can never replace.””

“I know.””

Nia stared.

“Then why?””

Hailey’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because my mom kept telling me that everything you had would eventually be mine.””

Nia froze.

“What?””

Hailey looked ashamed.

“She said your dad would choose us. She said after you turned eighteen, the house situation would change.””

Nia felt sick.

“She planned this for years?””

Hailey didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

That night, Marcus discovered something else.

A bank account.

One connected to Rebecca.

The account showed unusual withdrawals over several months.

Money had been transferred from a joint account.

Money that Marcus had saved.

Money intended for Nia’s future.

When he saw the records, his face went pale.

Nia noticed.

“Dad?””

He quickly closed the folder.

“Nothing.””

She knew him.

That meant something.

“What happened?””

Marcus sighed.

“Your mother left money for your education.””

Nia sat down.

“Okay.””

“Some of it is missing.””

Her heart sank.

“How much?””

Marcus hesitated.

Enough hesitation to answer the question.

“A lot.””

Nia stared at the floor.

Rebecca had not just attacked her memories.

She had attacked her future.

Marcus immediately contacted the bank.

The investigation began.

And then something unexpected happened.

Rebecca disappeared.

Not completely.

But she stopped coming home.

Her clothes were gone.

Her car was gone.

Her phone went straight to voicemail.

Hailey panicked.

“She wouldn’t leave.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why not?””

Hailey swallowed.

“Because she said she had a plan.””

Nia and Marcus looked at each other.

“What plan?””

Hailey hesitated.

Then she reached into her backpack.

She pulled out an envelope.

“I found this in her room.””

Marcus took it.

The handwriting on the front made his expression change.

It was addressed to Rebecca.

Inside was a printed message.

A conversation.

Emails.

Plans.

Nia read over his shoulder.

And her blood turned cold.

Rebecca had been communicating with someone.

Someone who advised her on how to remove Nia from the trust.

Someone who told her exactly what documents to create.

Exactly what steps to take.

And at the bottom of the page was one sentence.

“She won’t fight if she thinks nobody believes her.””

Nia stepped back.

Because suddenly she understood.

The yard sale was never the beginning.

It was the final step.

They had expected her to stay quiet.

To accept losing everything.

To believe she was powerless.

But they made one mistake.

May you like

They forgot Nia had a father who finally saw the truth.

And now, someone else was about to learn what happened.
