Chapter 2: The Letter Hidden Beneath the Box

Marcus did not raise his voice.

That scared everyone more.

He simply walked to the nearest table and picked up a small wooden picture frame.

“This goes inside.””

A neighbor holding a lamp looked confused.

“Are you canceling the sale?””

Marcus looked at the people standing around.

“Yes.””

Rebecca immediately stepped forward.

“Marcus, don’t do this.””

He ignored her.

He walked toward the crowd.

“I’m sorry, but this sale was not authorized.””

The customers looked uncomfortable.

One by one, they started returning items.

The woman who bought the necklace handed it back.

Nia accepted it with shaking hands.

“Thank you.””

The woman looked at her sadly.

“I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

Marcus began carrying boxes back inside.

Rebecca followed him.

“You are embarrassing us.””

Marcus turned.

“Embarrassing us?””

“Yes.””

She lowered her voice.

“Over old junk?””

Marcus stared at her.

“You sold my daughter’s memories while she was gone.””

Rebecca rolled her eyes.

“You’re being dramatic.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“You’re minimizing what happened.””

Hailey stood nearby.

Her arms crossed.

“She gets everything because her mom died.””

The yard went quiet.

Nia froze.

Marcus slowly turned.

“What did you say?””

Hailey looked away.

But then she continued.

“She gets the bigger room. She keeps all her mom’s things. Everyone pays attention to her.””

Marcus stared at her.

“She lost her mother.””

Hailey’s face tightened.

“And I’m tired of hearing about her.””

Nia felt tears forming.

She wanted to say something.

Anything.

But she couldn’t.

Because hearing those words from Hailey hurt in a way she never expected.

Marcus looked at his daughter.

“Nia…”

She shook her head.

“I’m fine.””

But she wasn’t.

She walked toward the house and picked up the wooden box.

That was when Marcus noticed something.

The bottom panel looked different.

He reached down.

“Wait.””

Nia stopped.

Marcus turned the box over.

His expression changed.

“No…”

“What?””

He carefully pressed the hidden latch underneath.

A small compartment opened.

Empty.

Marcus stared.

“Where’s the envelope?””

Nia looked confused.

“What envelope?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Your mother left you a letter.””

The words made Nia forget how to breathe.

“My mom?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“She wrote it before she passed.””

Nia touched the box.

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because she wanted you to receive it when you turned eighteen.””

Nia stared.

“You had a letter from her this whole time?””

Marcus looked away.

“I was waiting for the right moment.””

Her voice became quiet.

“What did it say?””

Marcus swallowed.

“I never read all of it.””

“Then how do you know it was there?””

“Because your mother told me.””

The three of them stood silently.

Then Marcus looked at Rebecca.

“Where is it?””

Rebecca immediately shook her head.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

But she answered too quickly.

And Hailey looked at her.

Just for a second.

A tiny reaction.

But Marcus noticed.

His eyes narrowed.

“You knew.””

Rebecca looked confused.

“Knew what?””

“You knew about the letter.””

“No.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then why did Hailey look at you when I mentioned it?””

Rebecca said nothing.

That silence was an answer.

Nia’s heart started racing.

“What was in that letter?””

Nobody answered.

So she went outside.

Back to the yard sale.

Back to the boxes.

Back to everything they wanted gone.

She searched through the trash bags near the driveway.

Rebecca followed.

“Nia, stop this.””

“No.””

“Nia.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t get to tell me to stop looking for something my mother left me.””

After several minutes, Nia found a torn piece of paper.

Then another.

Then another.

They had been ripped apart.

Marcus took them carefully.

His hands trembled.

He read the visible words.

“My daughter…”

He stopped.

Then he found another piece.

“This home…”

His face changed.

Nia noticed.

“What?””

Marcus looked at the paper.

Then at the house.

“No…”

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Because the truth was something none of them expected.

The house they were standing in was never supposed to belong to Rebecca.

May you like

It was never supposed to become Hailey’s future.

It belonged to Nia.
