Chapter 9: The Father Who Was Never Dead

Rebecca didn't move.

She couldn't.

The aircraft engines had stopped, but the sound of them seemed to remain inside her skull.

The runway lights glowed along the dark volcanic rock, guiding them toward a massive opening in the cliff.

And at the end of it—

her mother.

And Thomas Ellis.

Alive.

Rebecca stared through the windshield.

“No.””

The word came out as a whisper.

Michael looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed.

“My mother.””

Michael leaned forward.

Then his face changed.

“That's impossible.””

Rebecca didn't hear him.

Her eyes were fixed on the man standing beside the woman.

Thomas.

Older.

His hair was almost completely gray.

His face was thinner than Rebecca remembered from photographs.

But it was him.

The same eyes.

The same mouth.

The same expression Rebecca had seen in the picture inside the cockpit.

Her father.

The man she had spent her entire life believing was dead.

Michael looked toward Henry.

Henry didn't react.

“You knew,” Rebecca said.

Henry looked at her.

“Yes.””

“You knew he was alive.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe he was dead.””

“Yes.””

Rebecca turned on him.

“Why?””

Henry's answer was simple.

“Because Thomas wanted it that way.””

She didn't understand.

“He wanted his daughter to think he was dead?””

“He wanted you to have a life.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“You don't get to say that.””

“I know.””

The aircraft doors opened.

Cold ocean air rushed inside.

Rebecca stood.

Michael caught her arm.

“Wait.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“We don't know if that's really him.””

Rebecca looked toward the runway.

“My mother is standing next to him.””

“That doesn't mean—”

Rebecca pulled free.

“I've spent thirty-four years waiting to know the truth.””

She stepped down the aircraft stairs.

Nobody stopped her.

Henry watched from the cockpit.

Michael followed.

Caroline came after them.

As Rebecca reached the runway, the woman waiting in the distance began walking toward her.

Rebecca knew her immediately.

Not from photographs.

Not from memories.

From something deeper.

Her mother.

The way she walked.

The way she held her shoulders.

The way she looked at Rebecca as though every step was breaking her heart.

Rebecca stopped halfway.

Her mother stopped too.

Neither spoke.

Then the woman whispered,

“Rebecca.””

Rebecca's breath caught.

Her mother hadn't said her name like that in years.

Not in a memory.

Not in a letter.

Never.

Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.

“You're alive.””

Her mother shook her head.

“I'm sorry.””

Rebecca laughed through the tears.

“That's what everyone says.””

Her mother stepped closer.

“I wanted to come back.””

“Then why didn't you?””

“Because they were watching.””

“Who?””

“Everyone.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“I don't care.””

“I know.””

“You left me.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe Dad abandoned me.””

Her mother's face broke.

“I know.””

Rebecca's voice rose.

“Then tell me why!””

Her mother stood trembling.

“Because your father was trying to keep you alive.””

Rebecca stared.

“My father?””

“He wasn't dead.””

“I know that now.””

“No.””

Her mother shook her head.

“You don't know.””

Rebecca froze.

“What don't I know?””

Her mother looked toward Thomas.

“He almost died.””

Rebecca followed her gaze.

Thomas was standing only twenty yards away.

Watching.

Unable to approach.

Rebecca walked toward him.

Every step felt unreal.

Thomas didn't move.

When Rebecca reached him, she stopped.

He looked at her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he said,

“Hello, Rebecca.””

She slapped him.

The sound echoed across the runway.

Thomas closed his eyes.

He didn't defend himself.

Rebecca was crying now.

“You're alive.””

“Yes.””

“You're alive.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me grow up?””

Thomas swallowed.

“From a distance.””

“You watched my mother disappear.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me believe you were dead.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at her.

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””

She shook her head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“I know.””

“I don't want protection.””

Thomas's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“I wanted a father.””

He looked down.

“And I wanted a daughter.””

Rebecca's anger faltered.

Thomas continued.

“I thought if I stayed away, you would survive.””

“You don't get to decide that.””

“No.””

“I needed you.””

“I know.””

She stared at him.

“Why did you let them say you died?””

Thomas looked toward the dark sky.

“Because they were hunting me.””

“Who?””

“Richard.””

Rebecca's expression changed.

“He's still alive.””

“Yes.””

“He said the archive was dangerous.””

“It is.””

“He says people will die if it opens.””

Thomas nodded.

“He's right.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Then why did you make it?””

Thomas took a breath.

“Because I needed proof.””

“Of what?””

“Everything.””

He pointed toward the underground facility behind them.

“The archive contains records of every operation Black Meridian ever conducted.””

Rebecca swallowed.

“Assassinations?””

“Yes.””

“Political manipulation?””

“Yes.””

“Disappearances?””

“Yes.””

“Sterling Aviation?””

“Absolutely.””

“Who was really behind it?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then he looked directly at her.

“That's why I brought you here.””

Rebecca frowned.

“You didn't bring me here.””

Thomas looked at Caroline.

“No.””

Caroline lowered her eyes.

“Henry did.””

Rebecca turned.

Henry and Michael were walking toward them.

Rebecca looked between them.

“Who brought me here?””

Thomas answered.

“I did.””

She froze.

“How?””

“The aircraft.””

Thomas nodded toward the old jet.

“I designed it to respond to your biometric identity.””

Rebecca stared.

“You planned all of this.””

“I planned for you to discover the truth.””

“Not for me to survive.””

Thomas's voice softened.

“Both.””

Michael walked up.

“Thomas.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You made it.””

“Barely.””

Thomas smiled.

“You always were difficult to kill.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“So were you.””

Rebecca stared at the two men.

“You know each other.””

Thomas nodded.

“Michael helped me disappear.””

Rebecca looked at Michael.

“You told me you were investigating Sterling.””

“I was.””

“You knew my father was alive.””

“I did.””

“You lied to me.””

Michael lowered his head.

“Yes.””

Rebecca looked at Thomas again.

“How many people knew?””

“Not many.””

“Margaret?””

Thomas's expression changed.

“She knew.””

Rebecca's eyes narrowed.

“But the woman who called herself Margaret wasn't Margaret.””

“No.””

“Where is the real Margaret?””

Thomas looked away.

“She died.””

Rebecca's chest tightened.

“How?””

“Richard.””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Another death.

Another lie.

Another person sacrificed to keep the truth buried.

Thomas continued.

“Margaret helped me hide the archive.””

“Then Richard killed her.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you stop him?””

“I tried.””

“What happened?””

Thomas looked at the ocean.

“I arrived too late.””

Rebecca stared at him.

“My whole life has been people arriving too late.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You're right.””

She turned away.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then her mother stepped forward.

“There is something else.””

Rebecca looked at her.

“What?””

Her mother pointed toward the hidden facility.

“Richard isn't the only person coming.””

Michael checked his phone.

“We have movement.””

“How many?””

“Eight vehicles.””

Henry looked toward the cliff.

“They've found the island.””

Rebecca looked at Thomas.

“You knew they would come.””

“Yes.””

“Then why bring me here?””

“Because the archive has to be opened before they arrive.””

Thomas walked toward the aircraft.

Rebecca followed.

“What happens when it's opened?””

“Everyone sees the truth.””

“And then?””

“Then the world changes.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“That's not an answer.””

Thomas stopped.

“It may destroy Sterling.””

She nodded.

“I don't care.””

“It may destroy governments.””

“I don't care.””

“It may expose people you love.””

Rebecca looked at her mother.

“What people?””

Thomas didn't answer.

Rebecca stared at him.

“What are you hiding?””

Thomas's expression became serious.

“Your mother wasn't the only person who disappeared.””

Rebecca froze.

“Who else?””

Thomas looked at Caroline.

Caroline nodded.

Thomas said,

“Your sister wasn't the only child we lost.””

Rebecca's face went pale.

“I don't understand.””

“There were three of you.””

Silence.

Rebecca stared.

Caroline looked down.

Her mother started crying.

Michael closed his eyes.

Rebecca felt her world tilt.

“Three?””

Thomas nodded.

“Three daughters.””

Rebecca turned toward Caroline.

“You knew?””

Caroline shook her head.

“No.””

“You didn't know?””

“No.””

Thomas continued.

“The third child was taken before she was born.””

Rebecca stared.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas's voice broke.

“Your mother was pregnant again.””

Rebecca looked at her mother.

Her mother nodded through tears.

“Richard found out.””

“What happened?””

“He said the child couldn't exist.””

Rebecca felt sick.

“So he took her?””

Thomas nodded.

“She was born.””

Rebecca couldn't speak.

“And then?””

“She disappeared.””

Rebecca stared at him.

“She's alive?””

Thomas looked at her.

“Yes.””

Rebecca's heart pounded.

“Where?””

Thomas didn't answer.

“Dad.””

He looked at her.

“She is the reason Black Meridian survived.””

Rebecca stared.

“What?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Richard didn't just manipulate Sterling.””

“He created a successor.””

Rebecca's mouth went dry.

“Who?””

Thomas turned toward the facility.

“The person holding the archive.””

Rebecca followed his gaze.

The hidden structure beneath the island began to open.

Lights appeared inside.

Thousands of them.

Doors.

Servers.

Vaults.

A huge underground complex.

Thomas walked toward the entrance.

Rebecca followed.

Inside, the air became colder.

The walls were covered with glass panels.

Behind them were rows of storage drives.

Photographs.

Documents.

Video archives.

Bank records.

Names.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Rebecca saw presidents.

Billionaires.

Judges.

Military officials.

Corporate leaders.

People whose faces appeared every night on television.

She stopped.

“Oh my God.””

Thomas nodded.

“This is why they killed people.””

Michael stared at the archive.

“How much?””

“Everything from 1987 onward.””

Rebecca looked at the screens.

“Who has access?””

Thomas pointed toward the central console.

“You.””

Rebecca walked toward it.

A biometric scanner waited.

She placed her hand on it.

The system recognized her.

*ACCESS GRANTED.*

A wall opened.

Inside was a single file.

Not digital.

Paper.

Rebecca took it.

Her name was written on the front.

But beneath it was another name.

*EMILY LANE.*

Rebecca stared.

“Who is Emily?””

Her mother gasped.

Thomas's face changed.

Caroline looked confused.

Michael slowly stepped backward.

Rebecca opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

A newborn baby.

Then another photograph.

A hospital.

Then a medical bracelet.

*BABY GIRL — LANE*

Rebecca looked at her mother.

“Who is she?””

Her mother couldn't speak.

Thomas answered.

“Your other sister.””

Caroline stared at him.

“But I thought—”

“She survived.””

“Where is she?””

Thomas's eyes filled with pain.

“She was adopted.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“By whom?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then he whispered,

“Richard Hayes.””

The room went silent.

Rebecca's blood ran cold.

“My sister was raised by Richard.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at the archive.

“To create someone who would someday control everything.””

Rebecca turned back to the file.

Her hands trembled.

A photograph appeared on the next page.

An adult woman.

Thirty years old, perhaps.

Dark hair.

Sharp eyes.

A familiar expression.

Rebecca stared.

She knew that face.

Not from photographs.

Not from memory.

From the screen.

From a news broadcast she'd watched years earlier.

She whispered the name.

“Emily Hayes.””

Thomas nodded.

“She works for Richard.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“She's alive.””

“Yes.””

“Does she know who I am?””

Thomas's silence answered.

Rebecca closed the file.

“Does she know she's my sister?””

“Yes.””

Caroline suddenly stepped forward.

“Rebecca.””

Rebecca turned.

“What?””

Caroline's expression had changed.

Fear.

Pure fear.

“She isn't working for Richard.””

Rebecca frowned.

“Then who is she working for?””

Caroline looked toward Thomas.

“That's the problem.””

Thomas nodded.

“She isn't working for Richard anymore.””

Rebecca's heart sank.

“Then who?””

The lights inside the archive suddenly switched off.

Every screen went black.

A single message appeared on the central wall.

*YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE ARCHIVE CLOSED.*

Rebecca stared.

Then another line appeared.

*HELLO, SISTERS.*

Caroline froze.

Rebecca slowly turned toward her.

“You said you didn't know.””

“I didn't.””

Another message appeared.

*CAROLINE.*

Then:

*REBECCA.*

Then:

*I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR BOTH OF YOU.*

Michael reached for his weapon.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Don't.””

A camera descended from the ceiling.

Its lens focused directly on Rebecca.

A woman's voice came through the speakers.

Calm.

Young.

Familiar.

“Hello, Rebecca.””

Rebecca's blood ran cold.

It was her own voice.

Not similar.

Not close.

Identical.

She looked at Caroline.

Caroline looked terrified.

The voice continued.

“I thought Father would never tell you.””

Rebecca whispered,

“Emily.””

The speakers went silent.

Then the steel doors behind them slammed shut.

A countdown appeared across every screen.

*10:00*

Rebecca stared.

“What is that?””

Thomas's face went pale.

“The archive purge.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“What happens at zero?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“Everything disappears.””

The countdown began.

*09:59*

*09:58*

Michael ran toward the central console.

“I can stop it.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because the system wasn't designed to be stopped.””

Rebecca stared at the timer.

Then at the archive.

Then at the file bearing her name.

Her mother's face.

Caroline's fear.

Thomas's terror.

She understood.

The archive wasn't just a collection of secrets.

It was a weapon.

And someone had just started the countdown.

Rebecca stepped toward the central console.

“How do I stop it?””

Thomas looked at her.

“You can't.””

Rebecca's voice became hard.

“Then why did you bring me here?””

Thomas stared at her.

“Because I knew you'd figure it out.””

The countdown continued.

*09:41*

Rebecca placed her hand on the scanner again.

A new prompt appeared.

*SELECT HEIR.*

Three names appeared beneath it.

*REBECCA LANE.*

*CAROLINE ELLIS.*

*EMILY HAYES.*

Rebecca stared.

Thomas whispered,

“Only one can control the archive.””

Caroline stepped closer.

“No.””

Rebecca looked at her.

“You knew this?””

“I knew there was a choice.””

“What choice?””

Caroline looked at the names.

“Which daughter inherits everything.””

Rebecca stared at the screen.

Then a fourth option appeared.

*REJECT ALL.*

Thomas suddenly looked terrified.

“Don't.””

Rebecca turned.

“Why?””

“Because if you reject the inheritance, the archive opens automatically.””

Rebecca looked at the countdown.

*08:52*

“What happens then?””

Thomas said nothing.

Rebecca waited.

Finally he whispered,

“Every secret goes public.””

She stared at him.

“Isn't that what you wanted?””

Thomas looked exhausted.

“Not like this.””

“Why?””

“Because the archive contains secrets that could destroy innocent people.””

Rebecca looked around the room.

“Then we protect the innocent.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You don't know who they are.””

Rebecca looked at her mother.

Then Caroline.

Then Michael.

Then Thomas.

She took a breath.

For thirty-four years, other people had made decisions for her.

Her father.

Her mother.

David.

Richard.

Henry.

Caroline.

Everyone had decided what she could know.

Where she could go.

What she should believe.

That ended now.

Rebecca placed her hand on the console.

“I choose.””

The system waited.

Thomas stepped toward her.

“Rebecca.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

His face was filled with fear.

“Choose carefully.””

She looked at the three names.

Then at the fourth.

*REJECT ALL.*

Her finger moved toward it.

Caroline gasped.

“Rebecca, don't.””

Rebecca stopped.

“Why?””

Caroline stared at the screen.

Her face had gone white.

“Because that's what Emily wants.””

Rebecca slowly withdrew her hand.

The speakers crackled.

Then Emily's voice returned.

“Good.””

Rebecca looked around.

Emily laughed softly.

“Now you understand.””

The countdown stopped.

*08:21*

Rebecca stared at the screen.

Emily spoke again.

“I never wanted the archive.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

Rebecca whispered,

“Then what do you want?””

A pause.

Then Emily answered:

“You.””

The archive doors behind Rebecca opened.

Hundreds of lights came on.

And every photograph on the walls changed at once.

Rebecca looked up.

Her stomach dropped.

Every photograph now showed the same person.

Her.

Standing beside people she had never met.

At events she had never attended.

In countries she had never visited.

A lie built around her life.

A lie that had started before she was born.

Then one final photograph appeared.

It showed Rebecca as a child.

Standing beside Richard Hayes.

And behind them stood Emily.

Rebecca stared.

On the bottom of the photograph was a date.

The day Rebecca turned six.

She had no memory of that day.

But she remembered the dress.

She remembered the room.

She remembered a man telling her:

Forget this.

Rebecca's breathing stopped.

A forgotten memory returned.

A locked room.

A screaming woman.

A gunshot.

Her mother.

And a little girl with Rebecca's face.

Caroline.

But there had been someone else.

A third girl.

Emily.

Rebecca whispered,

“We weren't separated.””

Caroline looked at her.

“What?””

Rebecca stared at the photograph.

“We were together.””

Thomas stepped backward.

Rebecca turned toward him.

“You erased our memories.””

Thomas's face broke.

“I had to.””

“Why?””

Thomas couldn't answer.

Rebecca raised her voice.

“Why?””

Then a gunshot echoed through the archive.

Thomas jerked backward.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Rebecca screamed.

Michael turned toward the corridor.

Someone stood in the doorway.

Richard Hayes.

He lowered his gun.

And behind him stood Emily.

Smiling.

Richard looked at Rebecca.

“You were supposed to remember tomorrow.””

May you like

He raised the gun again.

“But tonight will have to do.””
