Calm

Chapter 10: The Daughter Who Chose the Truth

The gunshot echoed through the archive.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Rebecca stared at Thomas.

Her father stood frozen near the central console, one hand pressed against his chest.

Blood spread slowly across his shirt.

Then he collapsed.

“Dad!””

Rebecca ran toward him.

Michael moved faster.

He grabbed Thomas before he hit the floor and lowered him carefully.

“Stay with me.””

Thomas coughed.

His eyes found Rebecca.

And somehow, despite everything, he smiled.

“You remembered.””

Rebecca dropped beside him.

“What?””

“The memory.””

She shook her head.

“Don't talk.””

“I spent thirty years hoping you would remember.””

“Stop.””

“I thought I would never see you again.””

Rebecca's eyes filled.

“You don't get to leave.””

Thomas looked at her.

“I know.””

Richard stood near the entrance.

Calm.

Almost disappointed.

Emily stood beside him.

Watching.

Rebecca looked up.

Her anger replaced her fear.

“You shot him.””

Richard didn't deny it.

“Yes.””

The simplicity of his answer made it worse.

“You admit it?””

Richard looked around the archive.

“After everything, you still think this is about hiding what happened?””

Rebecca stood slowly.

“This is about you killing my family.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

“Then what is it about?””

“Control.””

The answer was immediate.

Rebecca stared.

Richard walked farther into the room.

“For decades, everyone has misunderstood Black Meridian.””

Michael raised his weapon.

“Don't move.””

Richard ignored him.

“They think it was about money.””

He looked at the endless rows of files.

“They think it was about power.””

He looked at Rebecca.

“They were wrong.””

“What was it about?””

Richard smiled.

“Information.””

The archive screens flickered.

Images appeared.

Politicians.

Executives.

Military leaders.

Celebrities.

Judges.

Every powerful person connected to the network.

“Information is the only thing that truly controls the world.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“So you destroyed lives for information.””

“No.””

Richard shook his head.

“I saved lives.””

Rebecca almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your father would never tell you the truth.””

Thomas looked up weakly.

“Don't listen to him.””

Richard smiled.

“Still protecting her.””

“You're the one who destroyed everything.””

Richard looked at him.

“You always believed you were the hero.””

Thomas tried to stand.

Michael stopped him.

Richard continued.

“You built Sterling because you wanted to change the world.””

Thomas said nothing.

“You believed technology could make people safer.””

Richard walked toward the archive.

“But then you discovered something.””

“What?””

Richard looked at Rebecca.

“That the world wasn't controlled by governments.””

“Then who?””

“People.””

“Which people?””

Richard smiled.

“The ones who understand fear.””

Rebecca looked at Emily.

“And you raised my sister to become one of them.””

Emily finally spoke.

“You make it sound worse than it was.””

Rebecca turned toward her.

“You knew.””

Emily nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew I existed.””

“Yes.””

“You knew we were sisters.””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing.””

Emily's expression didn't change.

“I was waiting.””

“For what?””

“For you to remember.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“I don't understand.””

Emily stepped forward.

“When we were children, you were the one who found the archive.””

Rebecca froze.

“What?””

Thomas looked away.

Emily continued.

“You don't remember because they erased it.””

Rebecca looked at her father.

“You erased my memory.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you were too young.””

Emily laughed softly.

“No.””

She looked at Rebecca.

“Because you chose me.””

Rebecca stared.

“What?””

The room became silent.

Emily walked toward the central console.

“When we were six, Richard showed us the archive.””

Rebecca felt dizzy.

A memory surfaced.

A dark room.

Three girls.

A wall of screens.

Richard kneeling beside them.

A voice telling them:

The person who understands this will inherit everything.

Emily continued.

“He asked us a question.””

Rebecca whispered,

“What question?””

Emily looked at her.

“Who should decide the truth?””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

The memory returned.

A little girl with her face.

Emily.

Rebecca.

Caroline.

Three children.

Three answers.

Caroline had been afraid.

Rebecca had been angry.

Emily had been silent.

“What did I say?””

Emily smiled sadly.

“You said nobody should.””

Rebecca opened her eyes.

Emily nodded.

“You were the only one who refused.””

Richard's expression changed slightly.

For the first time, Rebecca saw anger.

Not rage.

Something deeper.

Disappointment.

“You were always difficult.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“You tried to make us like you.””

“No.””

Richard shook his head.

“I tried to prepare you.””

“For what?””

“The truth.””

Rebecca looked around the archive.

“You mean this?””

“Yes.””

“All these secrets?””

“Yes.””

“All these people?””

“Yes.””

“You think knowing everything makes someone powerful.””

Richard smiled.

“It does.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped toward the central console.

“It makes someone responsible.””

Richard laughed.

“You sound like Thomas.””

“Maybe he was right.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“He wasn't.””

Rebecca looked at Thomas.

Her father was barely conscious.

But he was watching her.

Waiting.

Rebecca placed her hand on the console.

The system activated.

*HEIR SELECTION REQUIRED*

The three names appeared again.

Rebecca Lane.

Caroline Ellis.

Emily Hayes.

Then the fourth option.

Reject All.

Richard stepped forward.

“Don't.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you don't understand what happens.””

“Tell me.””

Richard stared.

“If you reject control, the archive releases everything.””

Rebecca looked at the files.

“All the secrets.””

“Yes.””

“Then let it.””

Everyone froze.

Michael looked at her.

“Rebecca.””

She turned.

“How many people have died protecting these secrets?””

Nobody answered.

She looked at Richard.

“How many?””

Silence.

“How many families were destroyed because people thought information was more important than lives?””

Richard's face remained cold.

“You don't understand consequences.””

Rebecca nodded.

“You're right.””

She looked at the archive.

“I don't know everything.””

She looked at Thomas.

“I don't know what my father did.””

She looked at Caroline.

“I don't know how many people lied to me.””

She looked at Emily.

“I don't know if I can ever forgive you.””

Emily looked away.

“But I know one thing.””

Rebecca turned back to Richard.

“No one person should own the truth.””

Richard's face changed.

“You would destroy everything.””

“No.””

Rebecca pressed the screen.

“I would stop someone from owning it.””

The system flashed.

*CONFIRM REJECTION OF INHERITANCE?*

Richard moved quickly.

“Stop her.””

Emily grabbed his arm.

“No.””

Richard looked at her.

“What are you doing?””

Emily stared at Rebecca.

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

“She chose.””

Richard pulled away.

“She doesn't know what she's doing.””

Emily whispered,

“Neither did we.””

Rebecca pressed confirm.

The entire archive began to shake.

Warning alarms filled the room.

*ARCHIVE RELEASE INITIATED*

*05:00*

Richard's face went pale.

“No.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“You're afraid.””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Richard looked at the screens.

Because for the first time, he wasn't in control.

Michael moved toward him.

“This ends now.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“You think this changes anything?””

He looked at the archive.

“When those files go public, people will panic.””

“Maybe.””

“Markets will collapse.””

“Maybe.””

“Governments will fall.””

“Maybe.””

“Millions will suffer.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“And maybe millions will finally know the truth.””

Richard stared at her.

“You really are Thomas's daughter.””

Rebecca looked back.

“No.””

She glanced at Caroline and Emily.

“I am ours.””

A loud explosion shook the facility.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Michael looked toward the entrance.

“We have company.””

Security forces entered the outer corridor.

Richard smiled.

“You still don't understand.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“What?””

“The archive release isn't the only thing happening.””

He pointed upward.

“The island is surrounded.””

Michael checked his device.

“He's right.””

Rebecca frowned.

“Who?””

Richard smiled.

“Everyone who wants this place buried.””

Thomas struggled to speak.

“Rebecca.””

She turned.

“Dad?””

His voice was weak.

“The archive has another function.””

“What?””

“The emergency broadcast.””

Michael looked at the console.

“Of course.””

Rebecca understood.

“You didn't just store information here.””

Thomas nodded.

“You built a way to send it.””

Richard's face changed.

“No.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“You thought you could destroy the evidence.””

She touched the screen.

“But you forgot something.””

“What?””

Thomas smiled faintly.

“She was always smarter than us.””

Rebecca entered the final command.

The archive changed.

Instead of thousands of files, one message appeared.

*GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION READY*

Richard rushed forward.

Michael blocked him.

They struggled.

Emily stood frozen.

Caroline watched Rebecca.

“What happens now?””

Rebecca looked at the countdown.

“Everyone sees.””

The timer reached zero.

The screens went black.

Then every screen displayed the same sentence.

*THE TRUTH BELONGS TO EVERYONE.*

Across the world, encrypted files began uploading.

News networks received anonymous packages.

Government servers received evidence.

Private databases opened.

The secrets hidden for decades began moving beyond anyone's control.

Richard fell silent.

For the first time, he looked old.

Tired.

Defeated.

Rebecca looked at him.

“You lost.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Emily.

“She did.””

Emily stared at him.

“What?””

“You.””

Richard smiled sadly.

“You were supposed to be the heir.””

Emily's face changed.

“I never wanted that.””

“Yes, you did.””

“No.””

Richard stepped closer.

“You spent your entire life proving you were better than Rebecca.””

Emily looked away.

“Because you told me I had to.””

Richard's smile disappeared.

Rebecca watched the realization hit her sister.

Not anger.

Pain.

Emily whispered,

“I was just another tool.””

Richard said nothing.

Caroline walked toward Emily.

For a moment, the two sisters looked at each other.

Then Caroline hugged her.

Emily broke.

For the first time, she cried.

Rebecca watched.

Three daughters.

Three lives.

Three people destroyed by the same man.

Behind them, Thomas coughed.

Rebecca immediately turned.

“Dad.””

She knelt beside him.

Michael checked the wound.

“He needs medical attention.””

Rebecca looked around.

“Can we get him out?””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

Thomas grabbed Rebecca's hand.

“Listen.””

“No.””

“You need to hear this.””

“What?””

He smiled sadly.

“I was wrong.””

Rebecca froze.

“About what?””

“About hiding you.””

She looked at him.

“I thought secrets would protect you.””

His voice weakened.

“But secrets only gave them power.””

Rebecca squeezed his hand.

“I hate that I lost so much time.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“I don't know if I can forgive you.””

“I know.””

“But I don't want to lose more time.””

His eyes opened.

For the first time, Rebecca saw not the powerful businessman from the photographs.

Just her father.

A man who had made mistakes.

A man who loved her.

“I'd like that,” he whispered.

Rebecca smiled through tears.

“Then stay alive.””

Thomas laughed weakly.

“I'll try.””

Hours later, the island was filled with aircraft.

Not private jets.

Not secret transport.

Emergency teams.

Investigators.

Journalists.

The world had changed overnight.

Black Meridian was no longer a hidden organization.

It was a name everyone knew.

Sterling Aviation collapsed within weeks.

Executives resigned.

Investigations began.

People who had spent decades hiding behind wealth and influence faced the consequences of their actions.

Some claimed the archive was fake.

Some claimed it was dangerous.

Some claimed Rebecca had destroyed the world.

But the truth had a strange power.

Once people saw it, they couldn't unsee it.

Months later, Rebecca stood outside the rebuilt Sterling Aviation headquarters.

The company was different now.

Smaller.

Transparent.

Honest.

Michael stood beside her.

“You sure you want to do this?””

Rebecca looked at the building.

“No.””

He smiled.

“That sounds convincing.””

She laughed.

“I spent my whole life being told what I should do.””

“And now?””

“Now I'm choosing.””

Michael nodded.

Behind them, Caroline and Emily approached.

The three sisters stood together.

Still different.

Still carrying scars.

But finally knowing the truth.

Emily looked at Rebecca.

“I don't expect you to forgive me.””

Rebecca looked at her.

“Good.””

Emily nodded.

“But I also don't want to hate you forever.””

Emily looked surprised.

Rebecca smiled slightly.

“We have a lot of lost time.””

Caroline laughed softly.

“For once, we have time.””

Rebecca looked toward the sky.

A private jet crossed above the city.

For years, aircraft had represented secrets.

Power.

Escape.

Now it represented something else.

A future.

Her father joined them slowly.

Still recovering.

Still fragile.

But alive.

Rebecca looked at him.

“You know what the strangest part is?””

Thomas smiled.

“What?””

“I spent my whole life looking for answers.””

“And?””

She looked at her sisters.

“At the end, the answer wasn't hidden in an archive.””

“What was it?””

Rebecca smiled.

“People.””

Thomas nodded.

Because finally, he understood.

The truth was never meant to belong to one person.

Not a billionaire.

Not a company.

Not a secret organization.

Not even a family.

The truth belonged to everyone.

May you like

And after thirty-four years of lies, Rebecca Lane finally had the one thing nobody could ever take from her again.

Her own choice.
