Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The gunshot never came.

A metallic click echoed through the archive.

The old man holding the weapon pulled the trigger.

Nothing.

His expression changed.

Marcus moved instantly.

He lunged.

The gun flew from the man's hand and skidded across the concrete floor.

Ethan kicked it beneath the cabinet.

Drew grabbed Victor.

Cal seized the old man's wrist.

Rose stood frozen.

She couldn't stop staring at the face she had spent nearly four decades believing belonged to a dead man.

Her father.

Arthur Whitmore.

He looked older, thinner, and harder than the man in her memories.

But there was no mistaking him.

The scar near his chin.

The crooked left eyebrow.

The silver watch he had worn every Sunday when she was a child.

Rose whispered, “Daddy?””

The old man's eyes met hers.

“Yes.””

She took one step toward him.

Then stopped.

“You died.””

Arthur smiled faintly.

“No.””

Rose's voice broke.

“They buried you.””

“Someone was buried.””

“Who?””

Arthur didn't answer.

Thomas did.

“A man who worked for him.””

Rose looked at her brother.

“You knew.””

Thomas nodded.

“You knew he was alive.””

“Yes.””

“For twenty-eight years?””

“Yes.””

Rose's face crumpled.

“Then everything you told me was a lie.””

Thomas looked ashamed.

“Most of it.””

Arthur laughed.

“You're still the same, Thomas. Always apologizing after the damage is done.””

Thomas turned toward him.

“You don't get to talk about damage.””

“You were weak.””

“I protected Rose.””

“You hid her.””

“I saved her.””

Arthur's smile disappeared.

“You kept the evidence hidden.””

“Yes.””

“You betrayed the family.””

“No.””

Thomas took a step forward.

“I betrayed you.””

The silence that followed was heavy.

Marcus glanced at the passage behind Arthur.

“How many people are with you?””

Arthur looked at him.

“You're not family.””

“Neither are you acting like one.””

Arthur smiled.

“I know who you are.””

Marcus frowned.

“How?””

“You took Rose from the bus station.””

Marcus felt a chill.

Arthur had been watching from the beginning.

“You knew she was coming home.””

“Yes.””

“You sent the messages.””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Arthur looked toward Victor.

Victor went pale.

Arthur said, “Victor.””

Victor shook his head.

“I only followed instructions.””

“From whom?””

Victor stared at Arthur.

“You know.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Say the name.””

Victor swallowed.

“Arthur.””

Rose closed her eyes.

Her father had been behind the operation.

Not Paul Mercer.

Not Victor.

Not Thomas.

Arthur.

The oldest generation.

The man who had built the machine that had consumed his own family.

Marcus looked at Thomas.

“Why did you take over the trust?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“To stop him.””

Arthur laughed.

“You never stopped anything.””

“I kept seven people alive.””

“You hid seven witnesses.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you wanted them dead.””

Arthur's face hardened.

“They were liabilities.””

Rose stepped forward.

“People.””

Arthur looked at his daughter.

“People become liabilities when they know too much.””

Rose shook her head.

“You've destroyed families.””

“I built ours.””

“You destroyed mine.””

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

“You married Frank.””

“Yes.””

“He was weak.””

“He loved me.””

“He betrayed me.””

Rose stared.

“What did Frank do?””

Arthur glanced at Thomas.

“Tell her.””

Thomas took a slow breath.

“Frank discovered what Father had been doing with the properties.””

Rose already knew.

“He wanted out.””

Thomas nodded.

“He threatened to expose him.””

Arthur spoke coldly.

“So Frank had to be stopped.””

Rose's voice shook.

“You killed my husband.””

Arthur didn't deny it.

“I gave the order.””

Everything inside Rose seemed to collapse.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You killed Grandpa?””

Arthur looked at him.

“I gave no such order.””

Daniel frowned.

“Frank was not your son.””

Arthur's gaze shifted.

Thomas looked at Rose.

“Frank was trying to protect Elaine.””

Arthur said nothing.

Thomas continued.

“He knew Elaine had been forced into the operation.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“She was seventeen.””

Thomas nodded.

“Arthur used her.””

Elaine began crying.

Arthur looked at her without emotion.

“She was useful.””

Rose stared at her father.

“She was a child.””

“She was family.””

“That didn't make her safe.””

“No.””

Arthur's voice was flat.

“It made her controllable.””

Rose slapped him.

The sound echoed through the underground room.

Everyone froze.

Arthur slowly touched his cheek.

Rose's hand trembled.

“You don't get to call yourself family.””

For the first time, Arthur looked genuinely angry.

Marcus stepped closer.

Rose didn't move.

Arthur stared at her.

“You have no idea what I built.””

“I know exactly what you built.””

She pointed toward the files.

“A prison.””

“A system.””

“For stealing people's lives.””

“For preserving ours.””

“You were afraid.””

Arthur smiled.

“I was prepared.””

Marcus looked at the shelves.

“Where are the seven survivors?””

Arthur looked at him.

“Gone.””

Thomas snapped his head around.

“What?””

Arthur smiled.

“They're dead.””

Thomas took a step toward him.

“You're lying.””

“Am I?””

Arthur reached inside his jacket.

Marcus immediately moved.

But Arthur pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

He threw it onto the table.

Seven names.

Seven dates.

Each followed by the word DECEASED.

Thomas picked up the paper.

His hand began to shake.

“No.””

Arthur smiled.

“I told you.””

Thomas looked at the records.

“These are false.””

“Everything can be made to look real.””

Marcus understood.

“Like Rose's death certificate.””

Arthur looked at him.

“Exactly.””

Ethan searched through the archive.

“Then these people could still be alive.””

Arthur said nothing.

Marcus smiled.

“That's why you're here.””

Arthur's eyes hardened.

“You're clever.””

“Not clever enough.””

“Perhaps.””

Marcus pointed toward the tunnel.

“You need something beneath the house.””

Arthur nodded.

“The original records.””

“The real names.””

“Yes.””

“Why haven't you taken them already?””

Arthur looked at Rose.

“Because the bunker can only be opened by her.””

Rose's hand went instinctively to her wedding ring.

Thomas whispered, “Frank knew.””

Arthur nodded.

“He hid the key in plain sight.””

Rose stared at the ring.

“Why my ring?””

“Because Frank knew you would never remove it.””

She looked down at the worn gold band.

Four decades of scratches.

Four decades of memories.

A secret hidden where she would never think to search.

Marcus crouched beside her.

“Take it off.””

Rose shook her head.

“Not yet.””

She stared at Arthur.

“You killed my husband.””

Arthur didn't deny it.

“You destroyed my daughter.””

“No.””

“You made my grandson afraid of his own mother.””

Arthur's expression remained cold.

“I gave your daughter a reason to cooperate.””

Rose looked at Elaine.

Elaine nodded through her tears.

“He threatened Daniel.””

Rose turned back.

“And now you want my ring.””

Arthur nodded.

“Give it to me.””

Rose smiled faintly.

It was the first smile Marcus had seen on her face that looked like the Rose from before the bus station.

“No.””

Arthur's expression changed.

“Rose.””

“No.””

She removed the ring.

Arthur watched.

Then Rose closed her fist around it.

“You spent twenty-eight years believing I was weak.””

Arthur stepped forward.

“You are weak.””

“No.””

She looked at Thomas.

“I was trusting.””

Then at Elaine.

“I was forgiving.””

Then at Daniel.

“And I was protecting.””

Finally, she looked at Arthur.

“But I am done being afraid.””

Arthur's face hardened.

“Give me the ring.””

Rose turned to Marcus.

“Take us to the house.””

Arthur laughed.

“You think you can leave?””

Marcus glanced at the tunnel.

“Maybe.””

He pointed toward Victor.

“Or maybe he can.””

Everyone looked at Victor.

Victor was sweating.

Marcus walked toward him.

“You helped forge Rose's documents.””

Victor said nothing.

“You controlled the trust.””

Nothing.

“You knew about the hospital.””

Victor swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Then you know how to get out.””

Victor glanced at Arthur.

Arthur gave him a cold look.

Victor's face collapsed.

“I'll show you.””

Arthur moved.

“Victor.””

Victor ran.

He disappeared down the tunnel.

Arthur started after him.

Marcus intercepted him.

The two men collided.

Arthur fought surprisingly hard.

Marcus blocked a punch.

Arthur struck again.

Marcus caught his wrist.

“Where's the exit?””

Arthur smiled through clenched teeth.

“You'll never find it.””

Marcus tightened his grip.

“Watch me.””

Behind them, Thomas grabbed Elaine.

“Go.””

Elaine took Daniel's hand.

“Come on.””

Rose moved toward the passage.

The group ran.

Marcus shoved Arthur backward and followed.

The tunnel split into two passages.

Victor had vanished.

Thomas pointed left.

“No.””

Clara stopped him.

“Right.””

Thomas frowned.

“How do you know?””

“Because Frank showed me.””

They took the right passage.

The tunnel grew narrower.

Water dripped from the ceiling.

Then the concrete walls changed to old brick.

Rose touched the wall.

“My father built this.””

Arthur's voice echoed behind them.

“No.””

Everyone stopped.

Arthur stood at the end of the tunnel.

He had somehow caught up.

“This was built before I owned the land.””

Rose frowned.

“Then by whom?””

Arthur smiled.

“That's what I've been trying to tell you.””

He pointed toward the floor.

“Your family didn't create the bunker.””

Rose stared.

“Who did?””

Arthur looked at Thomas.

“Your mother.””

Thomas went still.

Rose's heart stopped.

“Our mother?””

Arthur nodded.

“She discovered the operation before any of us.””

Rose whispered, “That's impossible.””

“She hid the records.””

“Why?””

“To protect you.””

Rose looked at Thomas.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Father threatened to kill you.””

Arthur shrugged.

“I didn't threaten her.””

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“You threatened everyone.””

Arthur ignored him.

“The bunker was designed to preserve evidence.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then why take control?””

Arthur smiled.

“Because evidence is power.””

They reached a steel door.

No handle.

No lock.

Only a circular indentation in the center.

Rose looked at her wedding ring.

Thomas nodded.

“That's it.””

She placed the ring against the indentation.

Nothing happened.

She looked confused.

Marcus noticed an inscription beneath the circle.

TO THE WIFE OF FRANK.

Rose traced the letters.

Then the door clicked.

It opened.

Everyone stared.

Inside was a massive underground chamber.

Rows of metal cabinets.

Boxes.

Old computer equipment.

Photographs.

And seven narrow doors along the back wall.

Daniel whispered, “There.””

On the nearest cabinet sat a black ledger.

Marcus walked toward it.

The cover read:

THE ORIGINAL LIST.

Arthur entered behind them.

“Don't touch it.””

Marcus opened the ledger.

Names filled the pages.

Real names.

Fake names.

Dates.

Locations.

Everything.

Ethan picked up another folder.

“Financial records.””

Drew found a stack of court files.

Cal looked at the seven doors.

“What's behind those?””

Thomas answered.

“Safe rooms.””

“Why seven?””

“One for each survivor.””

Marcus turned.

“But Arthur says they're dead.””

Thomas looked at the doors.

“I don't believe him.””

Suddenly a light came on above the first door.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Four.

Five.

Six.

Seven.

Every door unlocked.

One opened.

Then another.

And another.

Footsteps echoed inside the chambers.

Rose looked terrified.

“Someone's here.””

Marcus moved in front of her.

A woman stepped out of the first room.

Then an elderly man.

Then another woman.

Seven people.

Alive.

Thomas stared.

Arthur's expression finally broke.

“No.””

The first woman walked toward Rose.

“I've been waiting twenty-seven years.””

Rose looked at her.

“Who are you?””

The woman smiled through tears.

“My name is Miriam.””

She pointed toward the ledger.

“I was the first person your father declared dead.””

Marcus looked at Arthur.

“You said they were dead.””

Arthur stepped backward.

Miriam continued.

“Frank saved us.””

Rose's eyes filled.

“How?””

“He promised one day the truth would come out.””

Arthur suddenly turned toward the exit.

Thomas blocked him.

“Not this time.””

Arthur looked at his son.

“You think you've won?””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed toward Rose.

“She did.””

Arthur looked at his daughter.

Rose held the ledger against her chest.

Then the entire bunker trembled.

A distant explosion shook dust from the ceiling.

Ethan looked up.

“What was that?””

Arthur smiled.

“Too late.””

Marcus grabbed his arm.

“What did you do?””

Arthur looked at Rose.

“The house has been wired.””

Rose went pale.

“What?””

Arthur whispered the final truth.

“The moment that bunker opened, a timer started.””

The lights began flashing.

A digital countdown appeared on the far wall.

04:59.

04:58.

04:57.

Daniel stared.

“Four minutes?””

Arthur smiled.

“No.””

He looked at Rose.

“Four minutes until the house collapses.””

Rose stared at the countdown.

Marcus looked at the only exit.

And then he realized the tunnel they had entered through was already sealed.

The seven survivors were trapped.

Rose was trapped.

May you like

Daniel was trapped.

And the evidence they had spent all night trying to save was sitting in a room that would soon become their grave.
