Chapter 8: The Family Secret

For a moment, Rose forgot how to breathe.

Her brother stood only twenty feet away.

Twenty-eight years.

Twenty-eight years of believing Thomas was dead.

Twenty-eight years of carrying a grief so old that she had stopped remembering what his laugh sounded like.

And now he was standing in front of her.

Older.

Thinner.

His silver hair swept back from a face she knew as well as her own.

But there was something different in his eyes.

Something that made Rose take a step backward.

“Thomas?””

He smiled.

“Hello, Rose.””

Her voice cracked.

“You're alive.””

“Yes.””

“My God.””

She looked at Elaine.

Then Victor.

Then back at Thomas.

“You've been alive all this time.””

Thomas rested both hands on his cane.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He took a breath.

“Because everyone believed I was dead.””

Rose shook her head.

“You let me believe it.””

“I had to.””

“No.””

Her voice grew stronger.

“You chose to.””

Thomas's smile faded.

“You were safer believing I was gone.””

“Safer?””

Rose pointed at the documents.

“You've been using my daughter.””

Thomas looked toward Elaine.

“She made her own choices.””

Elaine shook her head.

“You threatened Daniel.””

Thomas's expression hardened.

“I protected Daniel.””

“You held his medical trust over our heads.””

“I kept the money from disappearing.””

Rose stared at him.

“You controlled it.””

“I preserved it.””

“You used it.””

Thomas didn't answer.

Rose's eyes filled with tears.

“You took my house.””

Thomas looked toward the floor.

“I never wanted your house.””

“Then why destroy my life?””

“I needed what was beneath it.””

“And you couldn't tell me?””

Thomas laughed quietly.

“Would you have believed me?””

“Yes.””

“No, Rose.””

His voice became softer.

“After Frank died, you trusted the people around you because you needed to.””

He looked at her.

“You trusted lawyers.””

“You trusted doctors.””

“You trusted your daughter.””

Rose stiffened.

Thomas continued.

“And every one of those people was compromised.””

Elaine wiped her cheeks.

“Not all of us.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You signed the papers.””

“Because you threatened my son.””

“You were given an impossible choice.””

“You created the choice.””

Thomas looked away.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Thomas's eyes settled on him.

“You are the biker.””

Marcus frowned.

“How do you know who I am?””

Thomas smiled.

“Because I know everything that happens around Rose.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“You've been watching us.””

“For years.””

“Why?””

“Because someone had to.””

Marcus glanced at the underground archive.

“You're the one behind the trust.””

“Yes.””

“The forged documents?””

“Not directly.””

“The hospital?””

Thomas was silent.

Marcus understood.

“You arranged it.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Thomas looked at Victor.

Victor immediately looked away.

Thomas said, “Victor made that decision.””

Victor's face changed.

“You told me she couldn't remember.””

“I told you to keep her safe.””

“You said she had to be removed.””

“I said the house had to be protected.””

Victor's voice rose.

“You knew exactly what I was doing.””

Thomas stared at him.

“And yet you're still alive.””

The room fell silent.

Victor looked frightened.

Not angry.

Frightened.

Marcus understood why.

Victor had believed he was the one controlling everything.

He wasn't.

Thomas was.

Marcus looked at the hidden tunnel behind the archive wall.

“What is beneath Rose's house?””

Thomas didn't answer.

“Names?””

“Yes.””

“Records?””

“Yes.””

“Money?””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

“Then what?””

Thomas looked at Rose.

“The truth about our father.””

Rose froze.

“My father?””

Thomas nodded.

“He didn't die the way you were told.””

“You said he died.””

“I lied.””

“Why?””

“Because I found him.””

Rose stared at him.

“When?””

“1998.””

The year of the photograph.

The year Thomas disappeared.

“I found him in a private facility.””

Rose's face went pale.

“The rehabilitation center.””

Thomas nodded.

“He wasn't a patient.””

“Then what was he?””

Thomas looked toward the floor.

“The owner.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Your father owned the facility?””

“On paper.””

“What does that mean?””

Thomas's voice became colder.

“The facility was used to move people whose identities had become inconvenient.””

Marcus frowned.

“Explain.””

Thomas looked at him.

“People who owed money.””

“Debtors?””

“Some.””

“Witnesses?””

“Some.””

“People who knew too much?””

Thomas paused.

“Yes.””

Rose felt sick.

“My father did this?””

“He didn't start it.””

“Then who did?””

Thomas looked at Victor.

Victor shook his head.

“Don't.””

Thomas ignored him.

“The operation began with a group of businessmen and local officials.””

“Who?””

Thomas smiled bitterly.

“You've already seen their names.””

He pointed toward the ledger.

Marcus looked at the list.

Twenty-three names.

“The bribes.””

Thomas nodded.

“They created fake deaths.””

Rose whispered, “And took people's property.””

“And identities.””

Ethan stared at the files.

“So the property scheme was built around identity theft.””

“Among other things.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“What happened to the people?””

“Some disappeared.””

“Some escaped?””

“Yes.””

“Some are still alive?””

Thomas nodded.

“Seven.””

Rose stared at him.

“Seven?””

“Seven people know everything.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“And you hid them?””

Thomas didn't answer.

Elaine did.

“He protected them.””

Marcus turned.

“Where?””

Elaine shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Thomas sighed.

“They're safe.””

Rose looked at her brother.

“What does this have to do with Frank?””

Thomas's face changed.

“Frank found them.””

“And?””

“He tried to expose everything.””

“That is why he died.””

Thomas nodded.

Rose felt as though someone had punched her.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my husband was going to die?””

“No.””

Thomas looked at her.

“I knew someone wanted him dead.””

“Who?””

Thomas stared toward the tunnel.

“The man who signed the first transfer.””

Marcus followed his gaze.

“Paul Mercer.””

Thomas nodded.

“But Paul wasn't the mastermind.””

“His father?””

“Dr. Samuel Mercer was part of it.””

Marcus looked at the records.

“Then who was in charge?””

Thomas's expression became strangely tired.

“My father.””

Rose stared.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it's true.””

“You said he was dead.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“He was.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

Rose felt the room go silent.

Marcus looked at the old man.

“You're saying your father ran this operation until he died?””

“No.””

Thomas opened his eyes.

“He ran it until I stopped him.””

Rose whispered, “You?””

“I took over the trust.””

“You became the person who controlled everything.””

“I became the person who could keep it hidden.””

Rose shook her head.

“You became exactly what you hated.””

Thomas didn't answer.

Elaine looked at him.

“Tell her about 2009.””

Thomas went still.

Marcus noticed.

“What happened in 2009?””

Thomas looked at Rose.

“The night Frank's office burned.””

Rose whispered, “I knew it.””

Thomas nodded.

“I was there.””

“You?””

“Yes.””

“With Evan?””

“Evan was there.””

“And your father?””

Thomas looked at the floor.

“No.””

“Who ordered the fire?””

Thomas didn't answer.

Rose stepped forward.

“Who?””

Thomas finally said, “Your husband.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus stared.

“Frank ordered the fire?””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“Frank ordered something to be destroyed.””

“What?””

“The original patient records.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then who set the fire?””

Thomas's voice dropped.

“Elaine.””

Daniel's head snapped toward his mother.

“No.””

Elaine began crying.

“I didn't know people would be inside.””

Rose stared at her daughter.

“What?””

Elaine covered her face.

“I thought they were empty.””

Thomas spoke quietly.

“She was told the office would be unoccupied.””

Marcus looked at him.

“By whom?””

Thomas looked toward Victor.

Victor's face collapsed.

“Don't.””

Thomas nodded.

“Victor arranged it.””

Victor shook his head.

“You told me to scare Frank.””

“I told you to stop him.””

“You knew the building was occupied.””

Thomas stood motionless.

“I didn't know.””

Victor laughed bitterly.

“You always say that.””

The tension in the room became unbearable.

Rose looked at Elaine.

“You set the fire?””

Elaine sobbed.

“I was seventeen.””

“That doesn't make it disappear.””

“I know.””

“You could have killed people.””

“I know.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because they told me they'd kill Daniel.””

Rose stared at her daughter.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You saved me.””

Elaine shook her head.

“I don't know if I did.””

Thomas suddenly turned toward the tunnel.

“We need to leave.””

Marcus blocked his path.

“Why?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Because they found us.””

“Who?””

Thomas's expression hardened.

“The seven survivors.””

Marcus frowned.

“I thought they were safe.””

“They were.””

“Then what changed?””

Thomas looked at Rose.

“You came home.””

Rose didn't understand.

Thomas pointed toward the archive.

“They thought I had the original deed.””

Marcus nodded.

“They're after the property.””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“They're after the names.””

Marcus looked at the ledger.

“Then we already have them.””

Thomas's face changed.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“That ledger is a decoy.””

Ethan looked down at the book.

“A decoy?””

“The real names aren't written there.””

Marcus opened it.

“What is this?””

“Every name in that book is incomplete.””

“Why?””

“Because the real list is encoded.””

Thomas pointed at the last page.

“The numbers beside each name correspond to seven hidden files.””

Ethan started flipping through.

“Where are the files?””

“Under the house.””

Rose looked stunned.

“You said the entrance wasn't in the house.””

“It isn't.””

“Then where?””

Thomas looked toward the tunnel.

“Here.””

Clara stepped forward.

“You're lying.””

Everyone turned.

Clara was staring at Thomas.

“You don't know where the entrance is.””

Thomas looked at her.

“Yes, I do.””

“You've never been inside.””

Thomas's expression tightened.

“Neither have you.””

Clara shook her head.

“Frank showed me.””

“Then you know.””

“I know what he showed me.””

She pointed down the tunnel.

“The entrance is sealed.””

Thomas went silent.

Marcus looked between them.

“Can it be opened?””

Clara nodded slowly.

“But not from this side.””

“Then from where?””

Clara looked at Rose.

“The house.””

Rose stared.

“The dogwood.””

Thomas's face went pale.

“You don't understand.””

“What?””

Thomas stepped closer.

“The tree isn't the entrance.””

Rose frowned.

“Then what is it?””

“It marks the entrance.””

“To what?””

Thomas looked toward Daniel.

“To the place where your grandfather buried the original records.””

Daniel whispered, “Underground.””

Thomas nodded.

“Far below the house.””

Marcus frowned.

“How far?””

“Deep enough that no city map shows it.””

Ethan stared.

“That sounds impossible.””

“It was built before the neighborhood existed.””

Marcus looked at the old map.

“An old utility tunnel.””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“A bunker.””

Rose remembered Frank's words.

The house is what protects the secret.

Her voice trembled.

“Why would my father build a bunker?””

Thomas looked at her.

“He didn't.””

“Who did?””

Thomas whispered the answer.

“I did.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“You built the bunker?””

“In 1998.””

“Why?””

“To hide the seven survivors.””

Rose stared at him.

“You've been protecting them all these years.””

“Yes.””

“Then why take my house?””

Thomas looked broken for the first time.

“Because the bunker is beneath it.””

Silence.

Marcus slowly understood.

The property wasn't valuable because of the land.

It was valuable because the house sat directly above a secret that had survived for nearly forty years.

Then Daniel noticed something.

A red light blinking inside the steel case.

“Marcus.””

Everyone turned.

The flash drive was glowing.

Ethan pulled it out.

“What is that?””

Daniel stared.

“That's not normal.””

The light blinked faster.

Then the drive emitted a faint electronic beep.

Thomas's face went white.

“Put it down.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because it's a tracker.””

Everyone froze.

Victor took a step backward.

“You said the tracker was disabled.””

Thomas looked at him.

“It was.””

The light blinked again.

A phone began ringing.

Not Rose's.

Not Marcus's.

Thomas reached into his coat.

His expression changed when he saw the screen.

“What?””

He answered.

Nobody could hear the other voice.

But Thomas's face told them everything.

The call ended.

Rose whispered, “Who was it?””

Thomas looked at her.

“My father.””

Rose shook her head.

“You said he was dead.””

“He is.””

“Then who called?””

Thomas looked toward the tunnel entrance.

His voice was barely audible.

“Someone using his phone.””

A loud metallic clang echoed through the underground passage.

Then another.

Then another.

Someone was coming.

Daniel stepped toward Rose.

“Grandma…”

Thomas raised his hand.

“Everyone move.””

Marcus didn't understand.

“Why?””

Thomas stared at the tunnel.

“Because there are only two ways out of this room.””

He pointed toward the stairway behind them.

“And they've blocked one.””

Then he pointed toward the dark passage.

“And the other leads directly to them.””

The distant footsteps grew louder.

Rose gripped Daniel's hand.

Elaine stood beside her.

Victor was backing toward the far wall.

Clara was already searching for something beneath the desk.

Marcus looked at Thomas.

“You said you wanted to protect them.””

Thomas nodded.

“Then tell us what to do.””

Thomas looked at Rose.

For the first time in twenty-eight years, his eyes filled with something that wasn't fear.

Regret.

“The only way to save everyone,” he whispered, “is to open the bunker.””

Marcus frowned.

“And how do we do that?””

Thomas looked at Rose.

“Your wedding ring.””

Rose stared at him.

“My ring?””

Thomas nodded.

“Frank gave you the key a long time ago.””

Rose touched the ring on her finger.

She had worn it every day for forty-three years.

“What key?””

Thomas looked toward the tunnel.

“The one he swore nobody would ever find.””

Then the wall behind them exploded inward.

Dust and stone filled the archive.

Everyone screamed.

A figure stepped through the broken wall.

Not Victor.

Not Evan.

Not Paul Mercer.

An elderly man with white hair.

A cane in one hand.

A gun in the other.

Rose stared at his face.

Her entire body froze.

Because she knew him.

She had seen that face every night in the oldest photograph in her family album.

Her father.

The man she had buried in 1998.

He smiled at her.

“Hello, Rose.””

Then he looked at Thomas.

May you like

“You've kept them hidden long enough.””

And he raised the gun.
