Chapter 5: The Man Who Survived the Truth

The basement of the Vance mansion had always been forgotten.

While the upper floors represented wealth, success, and power, the underground rooms represented everything the family wanted hidden.

Old documents.

Abandoned furniture.

Records from decades ago.

Memories nobody wanted to revisit.

And now, standing beneath the mansion where Arthur Vance had built his empire, Clara Bennett finally heard the words she had spent three years waiting for.

Her father had not died by accident.

He had been murdered.

The man sitting in front of her was shaking.

His name was Thomas Reed.

For twenty years, he had been a quiet employee inside Vance Global Holdings.

A financial assistant.

A person who organized documents, prepared reports, and worked behind the scenes.

The kind of person powerful executives ignored.

The kind of person who heard conversations nobody thought mattered.

The kind of person who knew too much.

Arthur stared at him.

"You worked with Michael Bennett?""

Thomas nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"Why have I never heard of you?""

Thomas looked down.

"Because people like me are easy to erase.""

The words struck Arthur harder than expected.

Because he knew exactly what Thomas meant.

In a company as large as Vance Global, thousands of employees existed beneath the executives whose names appeared on buildings.

People worked.

People discovered things.

People disappeared.

And the world moved on.

Clara stepped closer.

"You knew my father.""

Thomas looked at her.

His eyes filled with sadness.

"Your father talked about you all the time.""

Clara froze.

"He did?""

Thomas smiled faintly.

"He kept a picture of you on his desk.""

For a moment, Clara forgot everything else.

The billionaire.

The mansion.

The conspiracy.

She only heard one thing.

Her father remembered her.

"He said you were the reason he wanted to make the world better.""

Clara looked away quickly.

She refused to let the tears come.

Not here.

Not in front of these people.

She had spent years surviving by staying strong.

But hearing that her father had thought about her until the end made something inside her break.

"What happened to him?""

Thomas became serious.

"Your father discovered something inside Vance Global.""

Arthur stepped forward.

"What did he discover?""

Thomas looked at him.

"The company was being robbed from the inside.""

Arthur frowned.

"Impossible.""

Thomas shook his head.

"No. It was happening.""

He looked around the basement.

"Your company was losing millions every year.""

Arthur immediately responded.

"We had financial losses. Every corporation does.""

"Not like this.""

Thomas reached into his damaged jacket.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

"I saved a copy.""

Arthur stared.

"Of what?""

"Everything Michael found.""

Clara looked at the flash drive.

"Why didn't you give this to investigators?""

Thomas laughed quietly.

A bitter laugh.

"Because the investigators were paid by the same people hiding the truth.""

The room became silent.

Arthur's expression hardened.

"You are accusing law enforcement of corruption?""

"I'm telling you what your father discovered.""

Thomas looked directly at Arthur.

"The people controlling the money were connected to people controlling the investigation.""

Arthur looked away.

For a man who had spent his entire life believing he could control any situation, this was becoming impossible.

Clara watched him carefully.

She noticed something.

Arthur wasn't defending his family anymore.

Not like before.

The evidence was finally too heavy.

"Who was involved?""

Thomas hesitated.

That hesitation immediately caught Clara's attention.

"Who?""

Thomas looked at her.

"Your father suspected three people.""

Arthur's face changed.

"Who?""

Thomas slowly raised three fingers.

"Daniel Vance.""

A pause.

"Victoria Vance.""

Another pause.

"And someone else.""

Clara frowned.

"Someone else?""

Thomas nodded.

"Someone much closer than either of them.""

Arthur's voice became cold.

"Who?""

Thomas looked at him.

"The person who protected the secret for twenty years.""

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

The conspiracy was not created recently.

It was not about the retirement gala.

It had existed for decades.

Someone had been hiding the truth since before Clara was even an adult.

Arthur took the flash drive.

His hands were steady.

But his eyes were not.

"How did you survive?""

Thomas looked down.

"I didn't.""

Clara frowned.

"What?""

Thomas touched his bruised face.

"They found me.""

The room went quiet.

"I spent years running.""

"From who?""

Thomas looked toward the ceiling.

"The same people who killed Michael.""

Arthur stepped forward.

"How did you end up here?""

Thomas swallowed.

"Because I knew they were coming for me again.""

"Why?""

"Because I contacted Clara.""

Everyone looked at him.

Clara froze.

"You sent me the video?""

Thomas nodded.

"Yes.""

The answer shocked her.

"You were the one who sent the video of Daniel?""

"Yes.""

"Why me?""

Thomas looked at her.

"Because your father trusted you.""

Clara shook her head.

"He never told me anything.""

"He wanted to.""

Thomas's voice softened.

"But he was afraid.""

Clara looked confused.

"Afraid of what?""

Thomas looked at Arthur.

"Of what would happen if the truth came out.""

Arthur's expression changed.

"What does that mean?""

Thomas stared at him.

"Your father didn't just discover corruption.""

He paused.

"He discovered that the Vance family fortune was built on a lie.""

The sentence felt like a bomb exploding.

Arthur stepped backward.

"No.""

Thomas continued.

"The company your father created was not the company you inherited.""

"Explain.""

"Your father believed the original business was stolen.""

Arthur's face became pale.

"Stolen from who?""

Thomas looked at Clara.

"From your family.""

Clara felt confused.

"My family?""

Thomas nodded.

"Your grandfather.""

The basement became completely silent.

Clara stared.

"What are you talking about?""

Thomas took a deep breath.

"Before Vance Global became a billion-dollar company, there was another company.""

Arthur listened carefully.

"A smaller company.""

Thomas continued.

"Owned by your grandfather, Edward Bennett.""

Clara felt like the ground disappeared beneath her.

"My grandfather?""

She had never heard that name connected to business.

Her family had always been ordinary.

Her father had worked hard.

Her mother had worked two jobs.

There had never been wealth.

Never been power.

Never been anything connected to billionaires.

Thomas saw her confusion.

"Your grandfather built a technology company in the 1970s.""

Arthur looked shocked.

"That company became the foundation of Vance Global.""

Thomas nodded.

"Yes.""

Clara looked at Arthur.

"Are you saying my family built your company?""

Thomas answered quietly.

"Yes.""

The truth was impossible.

Yet somehow, everything was starting to make sense.

Arthur looked devastated.

"Why didn't I know?""

Thomas stared at him.

"Because your father hid it.""

Arthur looked angry.

"My father?""

"Your father knew the truth.""

Thomas looked toward the old basement walls.

"He knew the company belonged partly to the Bennett family.""

Clara felt a wave of anger.

"Then why didn't he tell us?""

Thomas's expression became painful.

"Because he was trying to fix it.""

"Fix it?""

"He wanted to return what was stolen.""

Arthur looked at him.

"Return billions of dollars?""

Thomas nodded.

"Yes.""

A silence followed.

Because suddenly Arthur Vance wasn't just the victim of a murder attempt.

He was also the heir of a secret.

A secret involving the woman standing beside him.

Clara.

The waitress who had saved his life.

The daughter of the man who might have been the rightful owner of everything Arthur possessed.

Then Arthur's phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The number was unknown.

Arthur answered.

"Who is this?""

A distorted voice responded.

"You found Thomas.""

Arthur's face changed.

Clara immediately knew.

Someone was watching.

The voice continued.

"That was a mistake.""

Arthur tightened his grip on the phone.

"Who are you?""

A quiet laugh came from the other side.

"You still don't understand, Arthur.""

The voice became colder.

"The problem was never your brother.""

Arthur looked at Clara.

The caller continued.

"The problem is the truth.""

Then the line went dead.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Clara noticed something.

Thomas was staring at the phone.

Not with fear.

With recognition.

"You know who that was.""

Thomas slowly nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

Thomas looked at Arthur.

Then at Clara.

His face became full of regret.

"The person who has been controlling the Vance family for twenty years.""

Arthur stepped closer.

"Tell us.""

Thomas closed his eyes.

"I can't.""

"Why?""

"Because if I say the name...""

He looked toward the basement door.

"...they will know I told you.""

A sudden sound interrupted him.

A loud crash from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

The security guards immediately reached for their weapons.

Arthur looked toward the ceiling.

"What was that?""

Nobody answered.

Then every light in the basement flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Clara heard footsteps.

Someone was moving through the basement.

Someone who knew exactly where they were.

Thomas whispered one sentence.

A sentence that made Clara's blood run cold.

"They're here.""

The emergency lights turned on.

Arthur looked around.

Thomas was gone.

The basement door was open.

And on the floor where Thomas had been sitting was a single piece of paper.

Clara picked it up.

Only four words were written.

*Stop searching, Clara Bennett.*

She turned the paper over.

On the back was another message.

May you like

A message that changed everything.

*Your father wasn't the only Bennett who survived.*
