Calm

Chapter 2: The Video That Shattered the Perfect Family Image

The ballroom remained frozen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody whispered.

Nobody even seemed willing to breathe.

The only sound came from Clara Bennett’s phone, where the video continued playing beneath the stunned faces of five hundred guests.

On the screen, the elegant image of the Vance family began to collapse.

The recording showed the private preparation area behind the hotel kitchen, a place where only authorized staff members were supposed to enter.

The lighting was poor.

The camera angle was hidden.

But the person standing beside Arthur Vance’s personal wine bottle was impossible to mistake.

The room watched as a familiar figure reached toward the bottle.

A figure wearing a perfectly tailored suit.

A figure who belonged among the richest people in the room.

A figure nobody expected to see.

Arthur stared at the screen.

His face slowly lost all color.

"No...""

The word escaped his mouth like a broken whisper.

Victoria looked from the phone to Clara.

Then back to the phone.

For the first time since Clara had interrupted the toast, Victoria Vance looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Afraid.

"Turn that off," Victoria demanded.

Her voice was lower now.

More controlled.

But the panic hiding beneath it was obvious.

Clara did not move.

"Why?""

She looked at Victoria.

"Are you worried people might see something important?""

The guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

They had come expecting champagne, speeches, and photographs.

They had not come expecting to witness the possible exposure of a murder attempt.

Arthur reached out.

"Give me the phone.""

Clara hesitated for a moment.

Then she handed it to him.

Arthur watched the video again.

His fingers tightened around the device.

The person in the recording opened the wine bottle.

Looked around.

Then added something small from a container into the liquid.

The movement was quick.

Almost practiced.

Arthur’s breathing became heavier.

"How long have you known about this?""

His voice was directed at Clara.

Not accusing.

Confused.

Clara looked at him.

"Three days.""

A wave of shock moved through the crowd.

"Three days?"" Arthur repeated.

"Why didn't you tell me immediately?""

Clara lowered her eyes briefly.

"Because I didn't know who I could trust.""

That sentence hit harder than anyone expected.

Even Arthur looked wounded.

Because in that moment, the billionaire founder of one of America's largest corporations realized something terrifying.

A stranger had protected him.

While the people closest to him might have been the ones who wanted him gone.

Victoria stepped forward.

"This is ridiculous.""

Everyone turned toward her.

She forced a laugh.

A nervous, artificial laugh.

"Arthur, you cannot seriously believe this.""

She pointed at Clara.

"She is a waitress. A nobody. She walks into our event with a fake video and expects everyone to believe her?""

Clara looked at her calmly.

"I expected you to say that.""

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"What did you say?""

"I expected you to question me instead of questioning the evidence.""

The room became uncomfortable.

Because Clara was right.

Nobody had asked who was in the video.

Nobody had asked why the bottle was opened.

Everyone had focused on attacking the person who exposed the problem.

Arthur looked at Victoria.

"Who is in the video?""

Victoria immediately answered.

"I don't know.""

Too quickly.

Too confidently.

Arthur noticed.

So did Clara.

The billionaire slowly turned the phone back toward the screen.

The video paused on the person’s face.

The image was slightly blurry.

But clear enough.

Arthur stared.

His expression changed.

A painful realization appeared in his eyes.

"No...""

This time, his voice carried something different.

Betrayal.

The guests leaned closer.

Some recognized the person.

Others waited for Arthur to say the name.

Finally, he spoke.

"Daniel.""

The room exploded with whispers.

Daniel Vance.

Arthur’s younger brother.

The man who had stood beside Arthur when Vance Global was first created.

The man who had been called the "heart of the Vance family.""

The man who had publicly praised Arthur just minutes earlier.

Victoria immediately shook her head.

"Impossible.""

Arthur looked at her.

"You know it's him.""

Victoria opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

That tiny hesitation told everyone more than words could.

Arthur's face hardened.

"Victoria.""

She looked away.

"Arthur, you are letting this woman manipulate you.""

"Answer me.""

His voice was stronger now.

"Did you know?""

The question hung in the air.

Victoria looked around.

She saw the guests watching.

The cameras recording.

The reporters already preparing tomorrow's headlines.

Then she smiled.

But it was no longer the elegant smile from before.

It was a survival smile.

"I knew Daniel was meeting with someone in the kitchen.""

Arthur stared.

"You knew?""

"I didn't know what he was doing.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Victoria remained silent.

That silence was enough.

Arthur stepped backward.

The man who had built an empire suddenly looked like someone who had lost everything.

Clara watched him carefully.

She understood that this was not just about the wine.

The poisoned glass was only the beginning.

There was something much deeper happening inside the Vance family.

Something that had been hidden for years.

A security officer approached.

"Mr. Vance, should we remove the waitress?""

Arthur immediately looked at him.

"No.""

The officer stopped.

"No one touches her.""

Victoria’s expression darkened.

"Arthur, are you serious?""

"She may have saved my life.""

The words shocked everyone.

Including Clara.

Arthur looked at the phone again.

"Clara Bennett.""

She looked surprised that he knew her name.

"Yes?""

"Where did you get this video?""

A long silence followed.

Clara looked around the room.

Then she answered.

"Someone sent it to me.""

"Who?""

She hesitated.

Arthur noticed.

"Clara.""

Her fingers tightened around her apron.

"I can't tell you yet.""

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

"There. You see?""

She pointed.

"She is lying.""

But Clara ignored her.

"Because if I tell you who sent it, that person might not survive the night.""

The room went silent again.

Arthur studied her.

"You think someone else is in danger?""

Clara nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

Clara looked at the Vance family.

At Arthur.

At Victoria.

Then toward the large windows overlooking the city.

"I don't know.""

That answer surprised everyone.

"But I know one thing.""

She took a breath.

"The person who tried to poison you isn't just trying to kill you.""

Arthur frowned.

"What do you mean?""

Clara looked directly at him.

"They are trying to destroy everything you built.""

The billionaire said nothing.

Because deep inside, he already understood.

A murder attempt was personal.

But destroying an empire required something bigger.

A plan.

A betrayal.

A war.

Suddenly, one of the reporters near the back of the ballroom raised his camera.

Flash.

Another flash.

Then another.

The moment was already spreading.

The perfect retirement celebration had become the biggest scandal of the year.

Victoria saw the cameras.

Her face changed.

She immediately walked toward Arthur and lowered her voice.

"We need to handle this privately.""

Arthur looked at her.

"Privately?""

His tone was cold.

"You mean like everything else?""

Victoria froze.

For a second, the mask disappeared.

Arthur saw it.

The hurt.

The anger.

The suspicion.

Twenty-five years of marriage suddenly felt fragile.

Clara noticed something else.

A small detail.

Something everyone else missed.

While the entire room was focused on Arthur and Victoria...

Daniel Vance was gone.

The man from the video had disappeared.

Clara looked toward the entrance.

Her heart sank.

"Mr. Vance.""

Arthur turned.

"What?""

"Your brother.""

"What about him?""

Clara pointed toward the empty doorway.

"He left.""

Security immediately rushed toward the exit.

But they were too late.

Outside the hotel, a black luxury sedan was already speeding away.

Inside the car, Daniel Vance sat in the back seat.

His calm expression had disappeared.

He stared at his phone.

A breaking news alert had already appeared.

"Vance Family Gala Interrupted After Possible Poisoning Attempt.""

Daniel clenched his jaw.

The plan was supposed to be perfect.

Arthur would drink the wine.

The celebration would continue.

The company transition would happen exactly as planned.

Nobody was supposed to notice.

Nobody was supposed to interfere.

Especially not a waitress.

His phone rang.

Daniel looked at the number.

Unknown.

He answered.

"What happened?""

A cold voice responded.

"You failed.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"She wasn't supposed to be there.""

"That is not an excuse.""

"Arthur didn't drink it.""

"No.""

The voice became quieter.

"But now everyone knows someone tried.""

Daniel looked out the window.

The city lights blurred past him.

"What do we do now?""

A pause.

Then the answer came.

"Remove the witness.""

Daniel’s expression changed.

"The waitress?""

"Clara Bennett knows too much.""

The call ended.

Back inside the ballroom, Clara suddenly felt a chill.

She did not know why.

She did not know that a target had already been placed on her back.

She only knew one thing.

The moment she stopped Arthur Vance from drinking that glass of wine...

her own life had changed forever.

May you like

And now she was no longer just a waitress who discovered a crime.

She had become the only person standing between the Vance family empire and the truth they had spent years burying.
