Chapter 5: The Meeting Behind Closed Doors

At 8:15 the following morning, Claire received an email from Hawthorne Ridge Middle School.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: Student Conduct Review — Mason Bennett*

She opened it while standing beside the kitchen counter.

The message requested that she and David attend a meeting at 9:00 a.m.

It also stated that Mason was expected to return to school for a formal disciplinary conference.

Claire read the final paragraph twice.

Failure to attend may result in the continuation of disciplinary measures based on available evidence.

She immediately called David.

"They're threatening to punish him.""

David sounded exhausted.

"I saw it.""

"Have you contacted the district?""

"Not yet. I wanted to speak with Alex's father first.""

"Why?""

"Because Alex needs someone in his corner who isn't connected to this school.""

Claire looked toward the living room.

Mason sat quietly on the couch, working through a mathematics worksheet.

He had barely spoken since the previous afternoon.

"We're not sending him back into that building until this is addressed," she said.

David agreed.

At 8:50, they arrived at the school without Mason.

The main office smelled of coffee and disinfectant.

A secretary asked them to sign in.

Claire noticed that Mrs. Hawkins was already standing near the conference room.

She wore a cream-colored blouse and black trousers.

Her hair was pinned neatly.

The ruler was nowhere to be seen.

"Mrs. Bennett," she said.

Claire walked past her.

"Good morning.""

Mrs. Hawkins followed them into the conference room.

Assistant Principal Bell sat at the head of the table.

A thick folder lay open in front of her.

"Thank you for coming," Bell began.

David took a seat.

"We're here to discuss the evidence.""

Bell nodded.

"Of course. However, before we begin, I want to address the concerns regarding Mrs. Hawkins's classroom management.""

Claire looked directly at her.

"She hit my son twice with a wooden ruler.""

Mrs. Hawkins shifted in her chair.

"I have already explained that I was correcting inappropriate behavior.""

"And I have already explained that hitting him was unacceptable.""

Bell raised her hand.

"Let's avoid emotional language.""

David leaned forward.

"Then let's use accurate language. Did Dana Hawkins strike Mason Bennett with a wooden ruler?""

Bell glanced at Mrs. Hawkins.

Mrs. Hawkins answered.

"I made contact with his hand.""

Claire stared at her.

"Contact?""

"I used the ruler to get his attention.""

"Twice?""

"Yes.""

"While he was standing at the board?""

Mrs. Hawkins nodded.

David placed his phone on the table.

"We have a photograph.""

Bell looked at the device.

"I've seen it.""

"Then you know what happened.""

"I know what the photograph appears to show.""

Claire's patience snapped.

"What exactly do you need? A video of the ruler coming down?""

Bell didn't respond.

Instead, she opened the folder.

"There's another matter we need to discuss.""

She removed a printed document.

It was an incident report concerning Logan Price.

According to the report, Logan had disrupted class, refused repeated instructions, and attempted to photograph a staff member without permission.

Claire looked at the page.

"Why is Logan being disciplined?""

"His conduct is under review.""

"Because he took a picture of what happened to Mason?""

Mrs. Hawkins folded her hands.

"He was using a phone in class.""

David gave a short laugh.

"That's what you're focusing on?""

Bell continued.

"The school cannot allow students to photograph staff without authorization.""

Claire stared at her.

"And teachers can hit students without authorization?""

The room went silent.

Then David removed his phone and placed a photograph of Alex's quiz on the table.

Mrs. Hawkins looked at it.

Her expression changed.

"Where did you get that?""

David didn't answer.

He placed the practice sheet beside it.

Then the printed email.

Bell reached for the email.

Claire watched her eyes move across the page.

The assistant principal's face tightened.

"These documents are confidential.""

David replied calmly.

"Then perhaps you should explain why your name appears on an email discussing a planned accusation against my son.""

Bell looked at Mrs. Hawkins.

Dana's mouth opened.

Then closed.

"Those documents were taken without permission," she said.

"That doesn't make them false," Claire answered.

Bell placed the email back on the table.

"I'll need to verify their authenticity.""

"Excellent," David replied.

"We'll provide copies to the district.""

Mrs. Hawkins stood abruptly.

"This is absurd. Alex is struggling academically, and I was trying to help him. Mason is an intelligent student, but he has become increasingly competitive.""

Claire slowly turned toward her.

"You're blaming a twelve-year-old for your decision to give your son test answers?""

"I'm not blaming him.""

"Then stop mentioning his name as though he's responsible for your actions.""

Bell raised her voice.

"Enough. This meeting is not an interrogation.""

David leaned back.

"Then what is it?""

Bell closed the folder.

"We are reviewing the incident.""

Claire looked at the unsigned disciplinary acknowledgment.

"Are you withdrawing the accusation?""

"Not at this time.""

"Are you suspending Mrs. Hawkins?""

"That decision hasn't been made.""

"Are you preserving the original quiz papers?""

Bell hesitated.

"Of course.""

David tapped the table.

"Put that in writing.""

The assistant principal's expression hardened.

"Mr. Bennett, I don't appreciate being spoken to this way.""

"Then give us a reason to speak differently.""

The door opened.

A man in a navy suit entered.

He introduced himself as Martin Shaw, the district's student services director.

He carried a leather briefcase.

"Good morning. I understand there's been a misunderstanding.""

Claire looked at him.

"A misunderstanding?""

He sat beside Bell.

"We take all concerns seriously. But we also have to consider the impact of unverified accusations on staff.""

David stared at him.

"My son has visible marks on his hand.""

"Yes, and the photograph is being reviewed.""

"By whom?""

"The district.""

"When?""

"Today.""

Claire pulled out her phone.

"Then you should also review the video showing Alex copying Mason's answers.""

Shaw nodded.

"We will.""

"And the email Mrs. Hawkins sent before the quiz?""

"We'll examine that too.""

Claire watched him carefully.

"Then why is Mason still listed as a suspected cheater?""

Shaw folded his hands.

"Because the referral has not yet been formally withdrawn.""

David shook his head.

"So the teacher's accusation remains official while the evidence against her is being reviewed.""

"It's a standard administrative process.""

Claire leaned forward.

"Mr. Shaw, my son is twelve. He went to school yesterday expecting to take a mathematics quiz. Instead, he was struck with a ruler, accused of cheating, and forced to stand in front of his classmates while his teacher demanded that he write a confession.""

Shaw looked down at his notes.

"That's concerning.""

"Concerning?""

"Yes.""

"Then do something.""

He cleared his throat.

"We can arrange temporary alternative instruction for Mason while the review continues.""

David frowned.

"You're removing the victim from the classroom?""

"We're trying to minimize disruption.""

Claire stood.

"No. You're trying to make the problem disappear.""

Shaw looked toward Bell.

Bell didn't move.

Then Claire noticed something.

A second folder was sitting partly underneath Bell's laptop.

Its label read:

*HAWKINS — PRIOR INCIDENTS*

Claire pointed toward it.

"What's that folder?""

Bell quickly pulled it closer.

"Internal personnel information.""

"Why is it on the table?""

"It was part of another review.""

Claire looked at Shaw.

"Does Mrs. Hawkins have previous complaints involving students?""

Shaw didn't answer.

But Bell's hand remained firmly on the folder.

And that told Claire more than either administrator intended.

As the meeting ended, Shaw asked them to wait outside while the school discussed next steps.

David and Claire stepped into the hallway.

A minute later, the conference room door opened.

A woman Claire had never seen before approached them.

She wore a district identification badge.

"Mrs. Bennett?""

"Yes?""

"My name is Eleanor Grant. I'm from the district's compliance office.""

Claire looked at her.

"Are you involved in the investigation?""

Eleanor glanced toward the conference room.

"I wasn't supposed to speak with you today.""

"Then why are you here?""

The woman lowered her voice.

"Because I recognized the name on that folder.""

Claire felt her pulse quicken.

"What folder?""

"The one marked Hawkins.""

Eleanor looked over her shoulder.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"Your son's case isn't the first time someone has complained about her. And the last family was pressured into withdrawing their complaint.""
