Chapter 3: The Boy Who Finally Told the Truth

By noon, Claire had received three calls from the school.

None of them contained an apology.

The first was from Assistant Principal Bell, requesting that the family refrain from contacting other students.

The second was from the district's student services coordinator, asking Claire to attend a formal meeting.

The third came from Mrs. Hawkins herself.

Claire stared at the incoming number before answering.

"Hello?""

"Mrs. Bennett, this is Dana Hawkins.""

Claire said nothing.

"I wanted to clarify what happened this morning.""

"Go ahead.""

There was a pause.

"I understand the photograph looks upsetting.""

"Looks upsetting?""

"I was trying to maintain order in my classroom.""

"Why did you hit my son?""

"I used the ruler to correct his behavior.""

"Did he hit another student?""

"No.""

"Did he threaten anyone?""

"No.""

"Did he damage school property?""

"No.""

"Then what behavior were you correcting with a ruler?""

Silence.

Then Mrs. Hawkins said something that made Claire grip the phone harder.

"Your son was being disrespectful.""

Claire closed her eyes.

"He's twelve.""

"That doesn't excuse dishonesty.""

"You still haven't answered my question.""

"I think this conversation would be more appropriate with an administrator present.""

"Fine. We'll have it with the district.""

Mrs. Hawkins hung up.

Claire lowered the phone.

David was standing in the kitchen, making Mason a sandwich.

Their son sat at the table with an ice pack wrapped in a dish towel.

He hadn't eaten anything since breakfast.

David placed the plate in front of him.

"Turkey and cheese. Your favorite.""

Mason nodded.

"Thanks, Dad.""

David sat across from him.

"Can I ask you something?""

Mason looked up.

"Sure.""

"Why didn't you tell us before that Mrs. Hawkins treated you like this?""

Mason stared at the sandwich.

"She didn't always.""

"What do you mean?""

"She used to be nice.""

Claire pulled out a chair.

"Did something change?""

Mason rubbed the edge of the ice pack.

"After winter break, she started giving Alex extra chances.""

David frowned.

"Extra chances?""

"If Alex forgot homework, she let him turn it in later. If he talked, she gave him a warning. But when I talked, she moved my seat.""

Claire exchanged a glance with David.

"Did you tell anyone?""

"No.""

"Why?""

Mason shrugged.

"Nobody likes getting a teacher mad at them.""

That answer hurt more than Claire expected.

She reached across the table.

"You can always tell us.""

Mason nodded, but his eyes remained on his hand.

Then he said something else.

"Mom?""

"Yes?""

"I think she knew Alex copied me.""

David stopped moving.

"Why do you think that?""

Mason looked toward the hallway, as though the classroom might still be listening.

"Because last week, Alex asked me for help with the decimal homework. I showed him how to move the decimal point.""

"And?""

"Mrs. Hawkins saw us. She told Alex to stop asking me questions because I was making him dependent on other students.""

Claire frowned.

"That's strange.""

"Then yesterday, Alex asked me again. He said he didn't understand the worksheet. I helped him.""

Mason swallowed.

"Today, he copied the answers because he didn't know how to do the quiz.""

David leaned forward.

"Did Alex admit that?""

Mason hesitated.

"No.""

"Why not?""

"Because she's his mom.""

The kitchen became quiet.

At 1:15 p.m., Patricia Price called.

"Claire, I think you should know something.""

Claire put her phone on speaker.

"What's happening?""

"Logan showed me the photograph. I've also spoken to him about the message he received.""

"Who sent it?""

"He doesn't know. But there's more.""

Patricia lowered her voice.

"Logan told me another student may have recorded something during the quiz.""

Claire looked at David.

"Recorded what?""

"I don't know. Logan says Tyler mentioned that someone had taken a short video when Alex was looking at Mason's paper.""

David immediately stood.

"Can you get Tyler's parents to contact us?""

"I'm trying.""

A few minutes later, the doorbell rang.

David opened it.

A teenage boy stood outside holding a school backpack.

Tyler Morgan.

He looked terrified.

"Is Mason here?""

David stepped aside.

"Come in.""

Tyler entered the kitchen.

He glanced at Claire, then Mason.

"I didn't know if I should come.""

Mason looked surprised.

"Why?""

Tyler pulled out his phone.

"Because I saw what happened during the quiz.""

He unlocked it and opened a video.

The recording lasted seventeen seconds.

The camera angle was imperfect.

It appeared to have been filmed from beneath a desk.

But the important part was unmistakable.

Alex leaned toward Mason's paper.

Mason moved his arm to cover it.

Alex leaned farther.

Then Mason pushed his quiz slightly away.

The video ended.

Claire watched it again.

"Where did you get this?""

"I recorded it because I thought Alex was doing something funny," Tyler explained.

"I didn't know it would matter.""

David leaned over the table.

"Did you send it to anybody?""

"No.""

"Did Mrs. Hawkins see it?""

Tyler shook his head.

"Not that I know of.""

Claire looked at the boy.

"Why didn't you show the teacher?""

Tyler stared at his shoes.

"Because Mrs. Hawkins is Alex's mom.""

He glanced toward Mason.

"And because she told us last month that students who spread lies about her son would face consequences.""

Claire felt cold.

"Did she say that in class?""

Tyler nodded.

"She said Alex had been bullied enough and anyone who accused him of cheating would be sent to the principal.""

David took a slow breath.

"Can you send us the original video?""

Tyler nodded.

He transferred the file.

Claire saved it in two separate places.

Then she looked at the boys.

"Thank you. Both of you.""

Tyler stood.

"I should go.""

Mason caught his sleeve.

"Wait.""

Tyler stopped.

"Thanks.""

The boys exchanged an awkward smile.

After Tyler left, David replayed the video.

Then he noticed something.

"Claire.""

"What?""

"Look at the clock.""

The video showed a classroom clock in the upper corner.

The time was 9:46.

David checked the disciplinary referral.

The teacher's report stated that Mason had repeatedly turned toward Alex before the quiz began.

But the video showed Alex leaning over Mason's paper after the quiz had already started.

"That's not all," Claire said.

She zoomed in on the recording.

Alex's hand was visible near the edge of Mason's paper.

Something else appeared.

A small folded sheet of paper tucked beneath Alex's worksheet.

David leaned closer.

"What's that?""

Claire paused the video.

The folded sheet had several handwritten numbers.

Mason stared at the screen.

"I've seen that paper.""

"Where?"" Claire asked.

"Alex had it during the quiz.""

David looked at him.

"What was on it?""

Mason hesitated.

"Answers.""

Claire felt her stomach tighten.

"Answers to what?""

"The quiz.""

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Mason added:

"He told me he got them from his mom.""

David slowly sat down.

Claire looked at the paused video.

The folded paper.

The identical answers.

The ruler.

The disciplinary referral.

Everything suddenly seemed connected.

But there was one question they still couldn't answer.

If Alex had received the answers before the quiz, why had Mrs. Hawkins accused Mason of cheating?

At 2:03 p.m., David's phone rang.

The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.

He answered.

"Hello?""

A boy's voice came through.

"Mr. Bennett?""

"Yes?""

"It's Alex.""

David looked at Claire.

"Alex? What's going on?""

The boy was breathing unevenly.

Then he whispered:

"Please don't tell my mom I called.""

David stepped away from the table.

"Okay. What's wrong?""

There was a long silence.

Then Alex said:

"My mom didn't just know I copied Mason.""

David's face changed.

"What do you mean?""

Alex's voice cracked.

"She gave me the answers before the test.""

A pause.

May you like

"And if you want to know why she blamed Mason, you need to see what she wrote on my quiz paper.""

Then the call abruptly ended.
