Chapter 18: The Confession in the Dark

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Raymond looked at his father.

Then at his mother.

Then at Grace.

His entire life seemed to have narrowed to that single sentence.

“He was driving.””

Edward lowered his head.

Raymond's voice was barely audible.

“Tell me she's lying.””

Edward didn't answer.

“Dad.””

Edward looked up.

“I didn't mean to kill her.””

Raymond stepped forward.

“Tell me what happened.””

Edward's hands shook.

“Melissa was going to meet Daniel. I followed her because Miller told me to retrieve the documents.””

“You followed your own daughter-in-law?””

“I thought I could talk her out of it.””

“Don't call it talking. You were sent to take evidence.””

Edward nodded.

Raymond's face tightened.

“What happened at the road?””

Edward looked toward the broken windows.

“Melissa got into the car with me. She wanted to know why I had been taking money from Miller. She had already discovered the payments.””

“And?””

“We argued.””

“What did you do?””

“I told her to give me the envelope.””

“She refused.””

“Yes.””

Edward swallowed.

“She said she was going to expose all of us.””

Raymond's voice rose.

“So you drove away?””

Edward nodded.

“She grabbed the steering wheel. I tried to pull away from her. The car crossed the center line.””

“And?””

Edward closed his eyes.

“The brakes weren't working.””

Raymond stared.

“What?””

“The brake line had been damaged before I got there.””

“Who damaged it?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you know it was damaged?””

Edward shook his head.

“Not until the car started losing control.””

Raymond's hands trembled.

“You were driving a car with your daughter-in-law inside, and you knew the brakes weren't working?””

“No.””

“Then why didn't you stop?””

“I tried!””

His father's voice cracked.

“I tried to keep the car on the road. Melissa was screaming. I couldn't control it.””

Raymond stepped closer.

“Did you survive?””

Edward nodded.

“Barely. The car hit the barrier. Melissa was thrown against the passenger door.””

“And you?””

“I climbed out.””

Raymond stared at him in disbelief.

“You left her?””

“I was injured.””

“You left her?””

Edward started crying.

“I heard people coming. I panicked. I knew Miller would make sure the investigation blamed her.””

Raymond's voice became cold.

“So you walked away.””

Edward nodded.

“I walked away.””

Raymond looked at Eleanor.

“And you knew?””

Eleanor shook her head.

“Not until Grace showed me the letter. I thought your father had been trying to help Melissa.””

Raymond looked at Grace.

“Where is the second letter?””

Grace lifted her chin.

“Grandma has it.””

Eleanor reached into her coat and pulled out a folded envelope.

Raymond approached.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Melissa's.

He opened it carefully.

If anything happens to me, I want someone to know the truth.

Edward is involved with Miller. He has been receiving payments for years. Tonight he came to meet me, but I realized too late that he had brought me to the wrong place.

I don't know whether he intends to hurt me. I only know that he is afraid.

The car is damaged. I can hear something leaking beneath it.

If I don't make it home, tell Raymond I loved him.

Raymond couldn't finish.

His vision blurred.

He folded the letter and held it against his chest.

Then he looked at Edward.

“You knew she was afraid.””

Edward nodded.

“And you still put her in that car.””

“I thought I could get the envelope and let her go.””

“You don't get to explain this away.””

“I know.””

“You don't get to tell me you loved her.””

Edward looked down.

Raymond turned toward Eleanor.

“Why did you protect him?””

Eleanor's tears fell freely.

“Because he was your father. Because I thought he could still be the man you remembered.””

Raymond shook his head.

“You let me believe she died alone.””

“I was wrong.””

“You let Grace grow up without her mother.””

“I know.””

“And you watched me search for answers for fifteen years.””

Eleanor lowered her head.

“I know.””

A sound came from the far end of the building.

Metal scraping against concrete.

Raymond turned.

A side door opened.

Robert Miller stepped inside.

He held a pistol.

“That's enough family history.””

Edward stiffened.

Miller looked at the folder in Raymond's hand.

“Put the manifest down.””

Raymond didn't move.

“You're finished.””

Miller laughed.

“You still think this is about a few stolen weapons?””

He gestured toward Edward.

“Your father was useful. Carter was useful. Angela was useful. But none of them understood the real purpose.””

Raymond stared at him.

“What purpose?””

Miller smiled.

“The shipment was a test. The weapons were only the beginning.””

He stepped closer.

“We were moving equipment, communications systems, and restricted technology through military channels. The people buying it weren't just criminals. They were people with government contracts.””

Raymond's jaw tightened.

“Names.””

Miller laughed.

“You don't have enough time.””

Then he raised the pistol toward Grace.

Raymond instinctively moved.

“Don't!””

Miller's eyes flicked toward Edward.

“Tell him what happened after Melissa died.””

Edward looked terrified.

Raymond turned toward his father.

“What?””

Edward swallowed.

“Miller told me the accident wasn't enough.””

Raymond's blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Edward looked at Grace.

“Someone had to make sure she never talked.””

Grace began crying.

Miller smiled.

“Your father made a deal.””

Raymond stared at Edward.

“What deal?””

Edward whispered, “I gave them the second letter.””

Raymond looked at the envelope in his hand.

Then at Eleanor.

Then back at his father.

“You said you didn't have it.””

“I thought I had destroyed it.””

Miller laughed.

“You gave us the original. This one is a copy.””

Raymond felt the floor shift beneath him.

Miller raised his weapon.

“And now that you've found the truth, I need the last copy too.””

Before Raymond could respond, the lights went out.

A gunshot exploded in the darkness.

Grace screamed.

Raymond lunged toward her chair.

Something heavy crashed against the floor.

Then a familiar voice shouted from the doorway.

“Sheriff! Get down!””

Malik.

The emergency lights flickered on.

Miller was gone.

Edward lay on the concrete, blood spreading across his shirt.

And Grace was no longer in her chair.

Raymond dropped beside his father.

“Dad!””

Edward struggled to breathe.

“Raymond…”

“Stay with me.””

Edward grabbed his wrist.

“Don't chase Miller.””

Raymond looked toward the open side door.

“Where's Grace?””

Edward's eyes filled with terror.

“He took her.””

Raymond stood.

Malik appeared beside him, holding a radio.

“Dre is after the SUV.””

Raymond drew his weapon.

Then Edward whispered one final sentence.

“Raymond… Miller isn't taking her for the letter.””

Raymond turned back.

“Then why?””

Edward's voice broke.

“Because Grace knows who ordered Melissa's death.””

Raymond froze.

“Who?””

Edward's eyes began to close.

“Not Miller.””

His father struggled for one last breath.

May you like

“Someone above him.””

And then the monitor in the ambulance outside began screaming.
