Chapter 13: The Accident That Wasn't an Accident

Raymond didn't move.

He stood in the middle of the training facility, staring at Angela as though she had just spoken a language he didn't understand.

“My father?”” he finally whispered.

Angela nodded, tears running down her cheeks.

“I know how this sounds.””

Raymond took one step toward her.

“Say it again.””

“Raymond—”

“Say it again!””

Angela swallowed.

“Your father was involved in the accident that killed Melissa.””

Raymond turned toward Carter.

The retired chief deputy was still pinned to the concrete, but his smile had disappeared.

“Is that true?””

Carter didn't answer.

Raymond grabbed the front of his jacket.

“IS THAT TRUE?””

Malik immediately moved closer.

“Sheriff, easy.””

Raymond released Carter.

Then he turned back toward Angela.

“Explain.””

Angela wiped her face.

“Fifteen years ago, Melissa contacted me. I was still a patrol officer then. She told me she had discovered irregular payments connected to Miller's contractors.””

Raymond shook his head.

“Melissa was a school counselor.””

“She was also helping you organize your campaign records. She found suspicious financial transfers hidden inside the department's public safety accounts.””

Raymond remembered those days.

Melissa had spent evenings at their dining table with spreadsheets, receipts, and folders.

He remembered asking her why she was so interested in his department's budget.

She had smiled and said she wanted to make sure he started his career as sheriff with clean hands.

He had thought nothing of it.

Angela continued.

“She found payments to a company called Northstar Logistics. The company didn't have a real office. It was registered to an address belonging to one of Miller's associates.””

Raymond's throat tightened.

“What happened?””

“She asked me to help verify the records. I agreed. But I was already working for Carter.””

“Did you tell him?””

Angela nodded.

Raymond stepped back.

“You told him?””

“I thought I could convince him to leave Melissa alone. I didn't know what he was planning.””

Carter suddenly laughed.

Angela looked at him.

“Shut up, Samuel.””

He grinned.

“You still don't understand, do you?””

Raymond turned.

“Talk.””

Carter shifted beneath Malik.

“Your wife was getting too close. Miller wanted the records. Your father wanted them buried. Everyone had a reason to keep her quiet.””

Raymond's face hardened.

“My father didn't kill Melissa.””

Carter shrugged.

“Ask him.””

Raymond stared at the older man.

“He's in the hospital.””

“Then perhaps you should ask before he dies.””

Malik tightened his grip.

“That's enough.””

Carter laughed again.

“Your sheriff thinks his family is innocent. That's what makes this so entertaining.””

Raymond looked toward Angela.

“Did you change the accident report?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Carter told me Melissa had been driving recklessly. He said there was no reason to complicate things.””

“And you believed him?””

Angela looked down.

“No.””

The answer was almost too quiet to hear.

Raymond closed his eyes.

For fifteen years, he had kept Melissa's photograph on his desk.

He had visited her grave every anniversary.

He had told their daughter, Grace, that her mother had died in a terrible accident.

Now he was learning that the woman he loved had possibly been murdered by people he once trusted.

He looked at Angela.

“You watched me bury her.””

Angela began sobbing.

“Yes.””

“You stood beside me at the funeral.””

“Yes.””

“You told me she was gone.””

“I know.””

Raymond shook his head.

“I don't think you understand what you've done.””

Angela lowered her head.

“I do.””

“No. You don't.””

He turned away.

Then he heard Eleanor's voice.

“Raymond.””

His mother was standing near the doorway.

She had been silent since the revelation.

Now she approached him.

“Your father came to me before he disappeared,” she said.

Raymond turned.

“What did he tell you?””

Eleanor looked frightened.

“He said Melissa had discovered something about the old military operation. He said he had tried to stop her from getting involved.””

“Did he say he caused the accident?””

Eleanor hesitated.

“No.””

Raymond stared.

“Then why would Carter say that?””

Eleanor looked toward the floor.

“Because your father told me he had been following Melissa that night.””

Raymond felt sick.

“Why?””

“He said he wanted to warn her. He believed Miller was going to confront her.””

“Did he reach her?””

“I don't know.””

Raymond looked at Angela.

“Where is the original accident report?””

Angela wiped her face.

“Carter kept a copy.””

“Where?””

Carter laughed from the floor.

“Somewhere you'll never find it.””

Dre tightened his grip.

“Keep talking, old man.””

Carter looked at Raymond.

“There's something else you should know.””

Raymond waited.

“Your wife didn't die because she found the money. She died because she found the name of the person who had been receiving it.””

“Who?””

Carter smiled.

“Your father.””

Raymond felt the room go cold.

“My father was receiving payments?””

“Edward Whitaker wasn't just a whistleblower, Sheriff. He was part of the operation before he decided to become a hero.””

Raymond stared at him.

“Liar.””

Carter shrugged.

“Check the bank records.””

Angela suddenly spoke.

“Samuel, stop.””

Carter ignored her.

“Your father received money from Northstar Logistics for three years. When he realized Miller was using him, he tried to get out.””

Raymond looked toward his mother.

Eleanor was crying silently.

“Did you know?”” he asked.

She shook her head.

“I swear I didn't.””

Carter laughed.

“Of course she didn't.””

Raymond turned toward Malik.

“Get him out of here.””

Malik looked at him.

“Sheriff?””

“Take him into custody. Separate him from Miller. Nobody speaks to either of them without an independent investigator present.””

Dre nodded.

“What about Angela?””

Raymond looked at her.

“She's going to answer every question.””

Angela didn't resist when Malik placed her under temporary custody.

But as she passed Raymond, she stopped.

“There's something you need to know about Melissa's final phone call.””

He turned.

“What?””

Angela looked terrified.

“She called me eleven minutes before the accident.””

Raymond stepped closer.

“What did she say?””

Angela swallowed.

“She said she had proof your father was alive.””

Raymond froze.

Angela continued.

“She told me she was going to meet him.””

Raymond stared at her.

Then he asked the question that had haunted him for fifteen years.

“Did Melissa know my father was alive before she died?””

Angela nodded.

“Yes.””

And suddenly, Raymond understood that the accident might have been only the beginning of the conspiracy.

Because if Melissa had met Edward that night, then his father knew exactly what had happened to her.

And he had spent fifteen years hiding it.

At 3:26 a.m., Raymond's phone rang.

The caller ID showed St. Mary's Hospital.

He answered immediately.

“Whitaker.””

A nurse spoke urgently.

“Sheriff, your father is awake.””

Raymond closed his eyes.

“Is he stable?””

“For now. But he keeps asking for you.””

Raymond looked toward the door.

“Tell him I'm coming.””

The nurse hesitated.

“There's one more thing.””

“What?””

“Someone left a package at his bedside.””

Raymond frowned.

“What package?””

“A small envelope addressed to you.””

He ended the call.

Then he looked at Eleanor.

“Mom, I need to go.””

She nodded.

“Bring me the truth this time.””

Raymond promised he would.

But when he reached the hospital, the envelope was already open.

And inside was a photograph of Melissa standing beside a man Raymond had never seen before.
