Chapter 19: The Man Who Came Back from the Dead
The black SUV remained motionless outside the motel.
Rebecca watched it through the curtains.
"Nobody moves," she whispered.
Michael reached for his weapon.
Travis stood beside Emily, keeping himself between her and the window.
Sarah Briggs stared at the vehicle.
"That's Nathan's truck.""
Rebecca turned.
"You're sure?""
Sarah nodded.
"He drives that model. But why would he come here?""
A knock sounded.
Three slow knocks.
Then a voice.
"Sarah?""
She went pale.
"Nathan?""
"Open the door. Please.""
Rebecca raised her hand.
A trooper moved toward the entrance while another positioned himself near the window.
"State police. Identify yourself.""
The voice answered.
"Deputy Nathan Briggs. I'm unarmed.""
Rebecca looked at Sarah.
"Stay back.""
The door opened.
Nathan stood in the hallway.
His shirt was torn. Blood ran down his forehead, and one arm hung awkwardly at his side.
Behind him stood an older man.
His face was deeply lined.
His hair was gray.
He leaned heavily on a wooden cane.
But his eyes were familiar.
Rebecca dropped her weapon.
"Dad?""
Peter Lawson stepped forward.
For a moment, he simply stared at the stranger in the doorway.
Then he whispered:
"Richard?""
The older man nodded.
"Hello, Peter.""
Rebecca looked between them.
"Who is he?""
Peter swallowed.
"Richard Cole.""
Travis went completely still.
"That's impossible.""
The older man looked at him.
"I'm sorry, son.""
Travis took a step forward.
"My father is dead.""
Richard lowered his eyes.
"That's what they wanted you to believe.""
The room became painfully quiet.
Travis stared at Richard Cole as though looking at a ghost.
His father's younger brother, according to the family stories.
His uncle Richard had disappeared when Travis was a toddler. His mother had always said Richard moved away after a bitter disagreement with Jonathan.
There had been no funeral.
No explanation.
Just silence.
"Where have you been?"" Travis asked.
Richard sat slowly.
"Running.""
"From whom?""
"Thomas Lawson. Franklin Pierce. Wade Mercer.""
Rebecca stepped closer.
"How did you survive?""
Richard looked at Peter.
"Your father helped me.""
Peter nodded.
"Richard was the first person to discover the emergency contracts were being used to fund illegal shipments. Jonathan found the financial records. I was investigating the people receiving the money.""
Travis shook his head.
"Then why did everyone say my father was involved?""
"Because Thomas needed a name to put on the paperwork," Richard answered.
"Your father owned the company. His signature was easy to copy, and he was already being blamed for the money.""
"But the recording—"
"Was real," Peter interrupted.
"Jonathan signed some contracts before he understood what Thomas was doing. When he discovered the fraud, he tried to stop it.""
Richard leaned forward.
"He also helped me escape the night Thomas ordered the fire at the records building.""
Travis looked at him.
"What fire?""
"The fire that supposedly killed your grandmother. She had discovered the payments, too.""
Sarah lowered her head.
"She was my mother.""
Rebecca turned.
"Your mother and Richard were working together?""
Sarah nodded.
"They were trying to get the evidence out of the county. Jonathan had agreed to help them.""
Richard looked at Travis.
"Your father put me in a truck and told me to disappear. He said he would find a way to clear his name.""
Travis's eyes filled.
"And he never came back.""
Richard nodded.
"No.""
"Why didn't you come back for us?""
Richard struggled to answer.
"Because Thomas told me he would kill you if I did.""
Travis turned away.
"Everybody had a reason to stay silent. Everybody had a reason to leave us alone.""
"Travis—"
"No. My mother buried my father. Emily spent years terrified of the woods.
Rebecca grew up believing her father was dead. And you all watched it happen.""
Richard bowed his head.
"You're right.""
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Nathan Briggs stepped forward.
"I can tell you where Thomas is going.""
Rebecca turned.
"Start talking.""
Nathan looked at Peter.
"He's going to the old river pumping station.""
Peter's expression changed.
"Blackwater.""
Nathan nodded.
"He's moving the remaining records there. And he has Margaret.""
Travis grabbed his jacket.
"Where is she?""
"Alive," Nathan answered.
"But Thomas plans to move her before midnight.""
Rebecca checked the time.
"We have less than an hour.""
Michael opened the map.
"Why the pumping station?""
Peter answered.
"There's an underground service tunnel connecting it to the old emergency storage facility. Thomas used it to move equipment and people without appearing on county traffic cameras.""
Rebecca studied the map.
"Then that's where the original ledger is.""
Richard shook his head.
"No. The ledger is already somewhere else.""
"Where?""
Richard looked at Travis.
"Your father hid it beneath the place where he taught you to ride a bicycle.""
Travis stared.
"The old farmhouse?""
Richard nodded.
"The well behind the barn.""
Travis remembered.
A cracked stone well.
His father lifting him onto the old bicycle.
The sound of his mother laughing from the porch.
He swallowed.
"Why didn't Mom tell us?""
"She didn't know the exact location," Richard said.
"Jonathan told me. I never had a chance to get there.""
Rebecca looked toward the door.
"Michael, send a team to the farmhouse. Secure the well and recover whatever is inside.""
Michael nodded.
"And the pumping station?""
Rebecca checked her weapon.
"We go now.""
The old river pumping station stood beside a narrow stretch of black water.
Its windows were broken.
Its concrete walls were stained with years of rain.
State police surrounded the property.
Rebecca entered through the eastern door with Travis, Peter, and Nathan.
Darnell arrived moments later with two members of his motorcycle club.
He had insisted on joining after learning Margaret was being held there.
"Rex is stable," he told Travis.
"Dr. Harris has him resting. I wasn't leaving your mother out here.""
Travis nodded gratefully.
Inside, a corridor led toward the underground service tunnel.
A light flickered at the far end.
Then they heard Margaret's voice.
"Travis!""
He ran.
Rebecca caught his shoulder.
"Careful!""
They reached a large equipment room.
Margaret sat tied to a chair.
Thomas stood behind her.
Wade Mercer was beside a control panel.
Franklin Pierce stood near the exit.
Three men.
The people who had controlled the county for decades.
Thomas smiled.
"Look at this. The whole family.""
Travis raised his weapon.
"Let her go.""
Thomas laughed.
"Still giving orders?""
Wade stepped forward.
"Put the gun down, Travis.""
Darnell moved beside him.
"That's enough, Sheriff.""
Wade recognized him.
His face tightened.
"You're the biker who caused all this trouble.""
Darnell's voice was calm.
"No. Your choices caused this trouble. We just stopped looking away.""
Franklin pointed his weapon toward Margaret.
"Everybody put their guns down.""
Rebecca looked at him.
"You're surrounded.""
"Then you'll have to decide whether you're willing to risk her life.""
Thomas stepped closer to Margaret.
"Peter, I think you and I need to finish our conversation.""
Peter stood in the doorway.
"You had twenty-three years to finish it.""
Thomas's smile faded.
"Your investigation destroyed everything.""
"No," Peter replied.
"Your greed destroyed everything.""
Thomas raised his pistol.
Then a voice came from behind him.
"Drop it.""
Everyone turned.
Nathan Briggs stood near the entrance.
His weapon was aimed directly at Thomas.
Thomas stared.
"You.""
Nathan's hand shook.
"You told me my sister was dead.""
Thomas sneered.
"She should have stayed dead.""
Sarah stepped into the room behind Nathan.
"She didn't.""
Thomas looked genuinely shocked.
Sarah's eyes filled.
"You burned the records building. You told me my mother died because she betrayed you. You made me believe Nathan abandoned me.""
Nathan lowered his weapon slightly.
"Sarah, I'm sorry.""
She shook her head.
"Not now.""
Thomas turned toward Franklin.
"Do something!""
Franklin raised his gun.
But before he could fire, a state trooper entered from the service tunnel.
"Drop your weapon!""
Franklin hesitated.
The trooper fired a warning shot into the concrete.
Franklin dropped his gun.
Wade reached for his belt.
Darnell moved.
He struck Wade's wrist, knocking the weapon away.
The sheriff stumbled against the control panel.
Rebecca rushed forward and forced him to the floor.
Thomas tried to pull Margaret from the chair.
Travis charged.
They crashed against the equipment table.
Thomas struck Travis across the face.
Travis fell.
Thomas reached for his dropped pistol.
Then Peter stepped between them.
"Enough.""
Thomas raised the weapon.
A gunshot rang out.
Peter staggered.
Rebecca screamed.
The pistol fell from Thomas's hand.
Nathan had fired.
Thomas dropped to his knees.
Peter collapsed into Rebecca's arms.
"Dad!""
Peter pressed a hand against his side.
"I'm all right.""
Rebecca looked at the blood.
"No, you're not.""
Peter managed a faint smile.
"You're still a terrible liar.""
State troopers flooded the room.
Thomas Lawson, Franklin Pierce, and Wade Mercer were placed in handcuffs.
Travis rushed to Margaret.
He untied her.
She grabbed his face.
"Oh, my boy.""
He held her tightly.
"You're safe, Mom.""
She began to cry.
Then Travis looked toward Thomas.
The man who had destroyed his family was being dragged away.
Thomas turned his head.
"You think this is over?""
Rebecca stood.
"Yes.""
Thomas smiled bitterly.
"Then you still don't understand who controls this state.""
Before anyone could answer, Michael's radio crackled.
"Agent Lawson, we've recovered the original ledger.""
Rebecca looked up.
"Where?""
Michael's voice shook.
"At the Cole farmhouse.""
A pause.
"There's something else. The ledger contains the names of every official who received payments.""
Rebecca looked at Thomas.
May you like
His smile disappeared.
And for the first time that night, he looked afraid.
