Chapter 17: The Witness Who Came Back
The gunshot echoed across the clinic parking lot.
Darnell dropped behind the van.
Rex hit the stranger's legs, knocking him off balance. The pistol skidded beneath a parked vehicle.
"Rex! Back!""
Darnell shouted the command.
The old German Shepherd released the man's trousers and stumbled backward.
His injured leg buckled.
Dr. Harris appeared in the doorway.
"Get inside!""
The stranger scrambled toward the fence.
Darnell moved to intercept him, but the man grabbed a metal pipe and swung.
Darnell ducked.
The pipe struck the van with a deafening clang.
Then the stranger ran.
State troopers arrived seconds later.
Two officers chased him around the building.
A third knelt beside Rex.
"Is he hurt?""
Darnell dropped beside the dog.
"Easy, old man.""
Rex was breathing hard.
Dr. Harris examined his leg.
"He shouldn't have been moving like that.""
Darnell rubbed his head.
"I know.""
Rex looked toward the fence.
His ears remained raised.
Darnell followed his gaze.
The stranger had disappeared.
But he had left something behind.
A small metal key.
And a bloodstained photograph.
Darnell picked it up.
The photograph showed Peter Lawson sitting in a hospital bed.
Alive.
Older.
And staring directly into the camera.
On the back was a date from six months earlier.
Darnell called Rebecca.
"He's alive.""
Rebecca arrived at the clinic with Travis and Michael.
She took the photograph from Darnell.
For a moment, she couldn't speak.
The man in the picture was unmistakably her father.
His face was thinner.
His hair was white.
But the small scar above his right eyebrow was the same one she remembered from childhood.
"Where did you find this?""
"On the ground after the man attacked us.""
Travis examined the photograph.
"Six months ago.""
Rebecca nodded.
"That means Peter was alive six months ago.""
Michael studied the hospital bed.
"There's a logo on the wall.""
He zoomed in.
A small emblem appeared above the patient's shoulder.
It read:
*SOUTHERN MERCY MEDICAL CENTER.*
Rebecca looked up.
"Where is that?""
Michael searched.
"Closed private facility outside Jackson. It was shut down after a funding dispute.""
Darnell pointed toward the date.
"Whoever took this wanted us to find it.""
"Or wanted us to go there," Travis replied.
Rebecca folded the photograph.
"Either way, we're going.""
Dr. Harris stepped forward.
"Not with Rex.""
Darnell glanced at the dog.
"I wasn't planning to.""
Rex gave a low whine.
Darnell crouched beside him.
"You stay here, old man.""
Rex pressed his nose against Darnell's hand.
"I'll come back.""
Southern Mercy Medical Center had been closed for nearly a decade.
The main entrance was chained.
The windows were boarded.
Weeds had grown through the parking lot.
State police entered through a service door.
Rebecca led the search team.
"Check every room. Look for patient records, transfer logs, anything connected to Peter Lawson.""
Travis followed.
The building smelled of disinfectant and decay.
They found abandoned wheelchairs, overturned beds, and medical equipment covered in dust.
In the basement, Michael discovered a locked records office.
The door had been reinforced from the inside.
"Someone didn't want this room opened," he said.
A trooper cut through the lock.
Inside were filing cabinets and stacks of patient records.
Rebecca searched the shelves.
Then she found a folder.
*PETER LAWSON — RESTRICTED PATIENT.*
Her hands shook.
She opened it.
The first page contained a photograph.
Her father.
The second page listed his medical condition after being transferred from Miller Farm.
The third page showed a series of dates.
He had been moved between facilities under false names.
Rebecca turned another page.
A handwritten note had been attached.
Patient is not to be released without authorization from T. Lawson.
Travis read it.
"Thomas controlled his treatment.""
Rebecca nodded.
"He's been keeping him hidden.""
Michael examined the final entry.
"There's a transfer order from six months ago.""
"To where?""
He pointed to the destination.
*PRIVATE RESIDENCE — BLACKWATER ROAD.*
Rebecca looked at the troopers.
"Find the address.""
Michael typed.
A map appeared.
The location was a secluded property near the old timber road.
Travis recognized it.
"That's not a residence.""
"What is it?"" Rebecca asked.
"An old hunting lodge. My father used to take me there.""
Rebecca looked at him.
"Are you sure?""
Travis nodded.
"I haven't been there since I was a kid.""
Michael checked the property records.
"Registered to Lantern Recovery Group.""
Rebecca looked at the folder.
"Thomas's company.""
A noise sounded behind them.
Everyone turned.
The basement door slammed shut.
Then the lights went out.
"Stay where you are!"" Rebecca shouted.
A flashlight beam swept across the room.
Someone was moving between the shelves.
A trooper called out.
"Police! Show your hands!""
A gunshot struck a filing cabinet.
Michael dropped to the floor.
Rebecca pulled Travis behind the desk.
"Stay down!""
Footsteps rushed toward the rear exit.
Two troopers pursued.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
"Rebecca?""
She froze.
The voice was weak.
Older.
But unmistakable.
"Dad?""
A man stepped into the flashlight beam.
His face was pale.
His clothes hung loosely from his body.
He leaned against the doorway, struggling to stand.
Rebecca stared at him.
"Peter?""
The man lifted his eyes.
"Becca.""
She ran toward him.
He caught her in his arms.
For several seconds, neither could speak.
Then Rebecca began to cry.
"I thought you were dead.""
Peter held her tightly.
"I know.""
"Why didn't you come home?""
He closed his eyes.
"Because I couldn't.""
Travis approached slowly.
"You're Peter Lawson.""
Peter looked at him.
"And you're Jonathan's boy.""
Travis swallowed.
"Did you know my father?""
Peter nodded.
"He saved my life.""
Travis glanced at the documents in his hand.
"Then why did his name appear on those contracts?""
Peter's expression darkened.
"Because Thomas used him.""
"Did my father know?""
"Yes.""
Travis looked away.
Peter reached for his arm.
"Your father tried to expose everything. He gave me the original ledger. He was killed before he could deliver it.""
"Who killed him?""
Peter looked toward the basement entrance.
"Wade Mercer.""
Rebecca stepped closer.
"Then why did Thomas say Jonathan was the architect?""
"Because Thomas needed someone else to blame.""
Peter took a shaky breath.
"Your uncle was the architect. He built the operation, used Jonathan's company, and paid Wade to keep the county quiet.""
Rebecca looked down.
"Where's the ledger?""
Peter shook his head.
"Your father hid it.""
"Where?""
Peter looked at Travis.
"He gave it to someone he trusted.""
Travis's voice was barely audible.
"Who?""
Peter answered.
"Margaret.""
Travis stared.
"She has it?""
"She did.""
Rebecca frowned.
"Then why is Thomas looking for her?""
Peter looked at the bloodstained photograph.
"Because Margaret knows where the original ledger is hidden.""
A radio crackled.
One of the troopers spoke urgently.
"Agent Lawson, we have an emergency.""
Rebecca turned.
"What?""
"Thomas Lawson has escaped custody.""
Michael looked up.
"How?""
The trooper hesitated.
"He wasn't alone. Someone inside the transport vehicle helped him.""
Rebecca felt cold.
"Who?""
May you like
The answer came through the radio.
"Deputy Nathan Briggs.""
