Chapter 11: The Truth Hidden Inside Our Family
My father.
The words felt impossible.
My father had always been the person I respected most.
He was a quiet man.
A practical man.
The kind of person who believed emotions should be handled privately.
When I was young, he taught me how to fix things.
Broken furniture.
Broken cars.
Broken problems.
But maybe that was the issue.
He had taught me how to fix everything except myself.
“What does my father have to do with this?””
Lucas looked uncomfortable.
“He knew about the divorce before anyone else.””
“That’s normal.””
“No.””
Lucas shook his head.
“He knew things about Sophie.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What things?””
Lucas glanced at Sophie.
“I think she should hear this too.””
Sophie’s expression changed.
“Why?””
“Because it involves both of you.””
I called my father immediately.
He didn’t answer.
I called again.
Still nothing.
Then, finally, he picked up.
“Ethan?””
“Dad.””
Something in my voice must have warned him.
“What happened?””
“I need you to answer something.””
A pause.
“Okay.””
“Did you know Sophie was sick before we divorced?””
Silence.
A long silence.
Then:
“Who told you?””
My hands went cold.
“You did know.””
My father sighed.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I need the truth.””
He didn’t speak.
And that hurt more than anything.
“Dad.””
Finally, he said:
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“How long?””
“Since before the divorce.””
Sophie covered her mouth.
My entire body went numb.
“You knew.””
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
My father’s voice became quiet.
“Because Sophie asked me not to.””
I looked at her.
She looked devastated.
“What?””
My father continued.
“She came to see me.””
“When?””
“Three weeks before the divorce was finalized.””
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“Why would she go to you?””
“Because she wanted someone to make sure you were okay.””
That sounded like Sophie.
Always thinking about me.
Even when she was the one suffering.
“What did she tell you?””
My father was silent.
Then he said:
“She told me she was afraid you were destroying yourself trying to save a marriage you thought was already dead.””
I looked at Sophie.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I never said that.””
My father continued.
“She said she didn’t want you staying because you felt responsible for her.””
My heart broke.
Because everyone around us had been trying to protect me.
And nobody realized they were taking away my choice.
“But why did you let me leave?””
My father’s voice softened.
“Because you looked exhausted.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
His honesty surprised me.
“I made a mistake.””
The words from my father shocked me.
He had never admitted mistakes easily.
“I thought giving you space was helping you.””
He paused.
“But I forgot something.””
“What?””
“Sometimes people don’t need space from the person they love.””
My eyes burned.
“They need someone to stand beside them.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my father said:
“There’s something else.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The night before the divorce hearing, Sophie gave me something.””
“What?””
“A letter.””
My heart stopped.
“The same letter she never gave me?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Sophie.
She looked confused.
“She gave you a copy?””
My father answered:
“No.””
A pause.
“She gave me instructions.””
“Instructions for what?””
His voice became heavy.
“She told me if you ever regretted leaving, I should give it to you.””
I sat down.
Everything was becoming too much.
A letter.
A secret.
A divorce.
A marriage that might never have ended.
“How did everyone know what I needed except me?””
Nobody answered.
Because maybe that was the tragedy.
Everyone was trying to save me from pain.
And in doing so, they allowed me to walk away from the person who needed me.
That evening, Sophie and I sat outside the hospital.
Neither of us spoke for a long time.
Finally, she said:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For involving your family.””
“You didn’t.””
She looked down.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
The answer came out before I could soften it.
She looked hurt.
But she nodded.
“I know.””
I reached for her hand.
“But I understand why.””
She looked at me.
“You do?””
“Yes.””
I squeezed gently.
“Because I was afraid too.””
The honesty surprised her.
“I thought if I admitted how much I loved you, I would have to admit how much losing you hurt.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“And I wasn’t ready for that.””
For the first time, she didn’t look away.
She just held my hand.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From my lawyer.
I opened it.
The words made my heart race.
*The court found new information regarding your divorce filing. We need to meet immediately.*
I showed Sophie.
She read it.
Then whispered:
“What if everything changes again?””
I looked at her.
After everything…
After all the secrets…
I finally knew my answer.
“Then we face it together.””
She looked at me.
May you like
And for the first time in a long time…
She believed me.
