Chapter 8: The Sister Who Carried Rachel’s Secret
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
For several seconds, he wondered if he had heard her correctly.
Rachel’s sister.
The words didn’t make sense.
Rachel had a sister.
A person who had attended family gatherings.
A person who had held Noah when he was born.
A person who had cried beside Daniel at Rachel’s funeral.
A person who had stood close enough to know every weakness in their family.
But dangerous?
Impossible.
“No.””
The word came out before he could stop it.
Vanessa looked at him with tired eyes.
“I knew you would say that.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Don’t give me another name.””
His voice was filled with frustration.
“Everyone has a story. Everyone has an excuse. Everyone says they were protecting me.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Daniel pointed toward the door.
“My children were afraid because of you.””
Her face tightened.
“I know.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You helped destroy my family.””
A tear moved down Vanessa’s face.
“Yes.””
Her honesty surprised him.
Because he expected another lie.
Another explanation.
Another attempt to make herself innocent.
Instead, Vanessa looked defeated.
“I did terrible things.””
Daniel said nothing.
“I hurt Noah and Sophie.””
His expression hardened.
“You did.””
“I know.””
The room became quiet.
Then Vanessa looked at the letter in his hand.
“But I didn’t kill Rachel.””
Daniel stared.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I expect you to listen.””
Mark stepped between them slightly.
“Why should we?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because if you don’t, the same person who destroyed Rachel will destroy your children.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“Start talking.””
Vanessa nodded.
She sat down slowly.
Her hands were shaking.
“I met your father because of Rachel.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“Not because Robert introduced me.””
She looked at him.
“Because Rachel asked me to.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stared.
“Rachel?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She contacted me months before she died.””
Daniel’s mind struggled to understand.
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of who?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Her sister.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Emily?””
Vanessa nodded.
Rachel’s younger sister.
Emily Hart.
The woman who always seemed gentle.
The woman who never raised her voice.
The woman who stood quietly at family events.
The woman who everyone described as kind.
“Why would Rachel be afraid of her?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Because Emily was obsessed with Rachel’s life.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You loved Rachel.””
“Yes.””
“So did everyone.””
She paused.
“But Emily didn’t just love her.””
Daniel waited.
“She wanted to become her.””
The words felt impossible.
Vanessa continued.
“She copied everything. Rachel’s style. Her interests.
The way she spoke. Even the charities she supported.””
Daniel remembered.
Small things.
Things he had ignored.
Emily wearing similar clothes.
Emily repeating Rachel’s favorite phrases.
Emily always saying she wished she had a life like her sister’s.
At the time, it seemed harmless.
Now it felt different.
“She was jealous?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Not normal jealousy.””
Her voice lowered.
“She believed Rachel stole the life that should have been hers.””
Daniel looked away.
“That’s insane.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa agreed.
“And dangerous.””
Mark crossed his arms.
“How does this connect to you?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Emily found me after Rachel died.””
Daniel immediately looked back.
“What?””
“She knew I had financial problems.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She knew I was vulnerable.””
“And she recruited you.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She told me Daniel needed someone. She told me Rachel would have wanted him to be happy.””
Daniel felt anger.
“She used Rachel’s memory.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“She knew exactly what to say.””
Daniel walked away.
The betrayal felt endless.
One secret after another.
One person after another.
“What was the plan?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then answered.
“Make you believe you weren’t capable of raising your children.””
Daniel froze.
The custody papers.
The false statements.
The fear.
“She wanted custody?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Not just custody.””
“What then?””
“She wanted control.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because Rachel’s children were the last thing she could not take.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward the lake outside.
“Emily believed Noah and Sophie belonged to Rachel.””
A pause.
“And if Rachel couldn’t have your life…”
She looked back.
“She wanted everything Rachel left behind.””
Daniel felt sick.
His children.
His home.
His family.
Everything.
“She convinced Robert to help?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
That surprised him.
“Then why was his name involved?””
“Because Emily manipulated everyone.””
Vanessa stood.
“Robert was investigating her.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“Your father discovered what she was doing.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Vanessa gave a sad smile.
“Because Emily had something on him.””
Daniel remembered.
The hidden money.
The company.
The secrets.
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel studied her.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
For once, she sounded truthful.
“Emily kept information on everyone.””
Mark looked serious.
“A blackmail system.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She collected secrets.””
Daniel thought of the hidden phone.
The schedules.
The documents.
“She planned everything.””
“Yes.””
“But why fake my abandonment?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because she wanted the world to believe you walked away.””
Daniel understood.
A father who abandoned his children.
A family without him.
A perfect story.
“She wanted to replace me.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She wanted to become the person your children trusted.””
Daniel felt a wave of anger.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“No one replaces Rachel.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“No.””
She looked down.
“But someone tried.””
The cabin became silent.
Then Mark’s phone rang.
He answered quickly.
“Hello?””
His expression changed.
Daniel noticed.
“What happened?””
Mark listened for several seconds.
Then looked at Daniel.
“It’s the security team.””
Daniel immediately became alert.
“What about the kids?””
Mark’s face turned serious.
“They’re gone.””
The world stopped.
Daniel felt like the floor disappeared.
“What?””
“The house was empty when they arrived.””
“No.””
Daniel moved toward the door.
“No.””
Mark grabbed his arm.
“Daniel, listen.””
“No!””
His voice exploded.
“My children are gone.””
Vanessa stood frozen.
Then her face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“Oh no.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at the letter.
Then at him.
“She knows.””
“Who?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Emily.””
Daniel grabbed his phone.
Noah’s number.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
Again.
Nothing.
His breathing became faster.
Then a message appeared.
Unknown number.
Daniel opened it.
One photo.
His children sitting together.
Alive.
Safe.
But terrified.
Daniel’s heart broke.
The message below said:
*Now you understand how Rachel felt.*
Daniel stared.
Another message appeared.
*Come alone.*
A location followed.
The old Carter estate.
The house where Robert grew up.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“She wants me there.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“What?””
“She doesn’t want you there.””
Vanessa’s face was pale.
“She wants you to remember.””
Daniel looked at the photo again.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because that’s where Rachel learned the truth.””
Mark stepped forward.
“This is a trap.””
Daniel knew.
He knew it was.
But he also knew something else.
His children were there.
And no trap in the world would stop him from going.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
For the first time, there was no manipulation in her eyes.
Only fear.
“If you go there…”
She paused.
“You may find your children.””
Daniel waited.
“But you may also find out why Rachel really died.””
Daniel looked at the picture.
Then toward the dark forest outside.
The truth had followed him from his home.
To the cabin.
Now it was waiting at the place where it all began.
Daniel picked up his jacket.
“Then I’m going.””
Mark shook his head.
“I’m coming with you.””
Daniel nodded.
Vanessa stood.
“Me too.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You understand I don’t trust you.””
“I know.””
“You could be lying.””
“I know.””
“Then why come?””
Vanessa looked toward the photograph of Rachel.
“Because I owe her.””
The three of them left the cabin.
But they didn’t see the figure watching from the trees.
A woman standing silently in the darkness.
Emily Hart.
She watched the car disappear down the road.
May you like
And smiled.
Because Daniel was finally coming home.
