Chapter 5: The Enemy Hidden Among Them

Daniel had spent four years trying to accept Rachel’s death.

He had told himself that some things in life could never be explained.

Some losses could never be fixed.

Some pain simply had to be carried.

But now his entire understanding of that night was collapsing.

Rachel had not simply disappeared from his life.

She had been afraid.

She had been searching for answers.

She had been trying to warn him.

And according to his father, someone had made sure she never got the chance.

Daniel stared at Robert.

The man standing in front of him was the same father who taught him how to ride a bike.

The same father who attended every school event.

The same father who told him that loyalty was the most important thing a person could have.

But now Daniel wondered something terrifying.

Had Robert taught him loyalty because he believed in it?

Or because he needed Daniel to stay loyal to him?

“Say it again.””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

Robert looked at him.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You said someone killed Rachel.””

Robert remained silent.

“Say who.””

The older man looked toward Noah and Sophie.

The children were watching.

Confused.

Scared.

Daniel noticed immediately.

Whatever happened next, they couldn’t be caught in the middle.

He turned to Mark.

“Take them outside.””

Noah grabbed Daniel’s hand.

“Daddy?””

Daniel knelt.

“I need you to trust me.””

Noah looked uncertain.

“You’re coming with us?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“I promise.””

That was enough.

Noah nodded.

Mark guided the children out of the room.

When the door closed, Daniel faced his father again.

“Now.””

Robert sat down slowly.

For the first time in Daniel’s life, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just old.

“You think Vanessa was the person behind all this.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

“You’re wrong.””

“Then explain.””

Robert looked at the floor.

“Your mother and I built Carter Industries from nothing.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that have to do with Rachel?””

“Everything.””

Robert leaned back.

“Success creates enemies.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Turn this into some business story.””

Robert’s expression hardened.

“Because that’s exactly what it is.””

Daniel stared.

“You expect me to believe someone killed my wife because of a company?””

“Not because of the company.””

Robert paused.

“Because of what the company knows.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Robert stood and walked toward the window.

“Years ago, before you took over daily operations, your mother discovered something.””

Daniel frowned.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Robert looked outside.

“Financial crimes.””

Daniel said nothing.

Robert continued.

“People inside the company were stealing money. Creating fake accounts. Moving assets through different companies.””

“And you?””

“I investigated.””

Daniel watched him carefully.

“What happened?””

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“I found out it wasn’t just employees.””

A silence followed.

“Who?””

Robert looked back.

“People close to us.””

Daniel felt uneasy.

“Who?””

Robert didn’t answer immediately.

That bothered Daniel more than anything.

Because Robert was never speechless.

Never uncertain.

Never afraid.

“Dad.””

Robert finally spoke.

“Rachel found the same information.””

Daniel’s breathing changed.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before Noah was born.””

Daniel stared.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Robert looked away.

“That is the question.””

Daniel felt anger rising.

“No. You don’t get to do that.””

“Do what?””

“Act like she was the problem.””

Robert remained quiet.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You keep talking like Rachel made mistakes. Like she caused this.””

“I’m saying she became involved in something dangerous.””

“Because she was trying to protect us.””

Robert didn’t answer.

And that silence told Daniel everything.

He was hiding something.

“You knew.””

Robert looked at him.

“You knew she was investigating.””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

Daniel laughed.

The sound was empty.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Robert’s face tightened.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You protected yourself.””

The words hit.

Robert looked hurt.

But Daniel couldn’t stop.

“You knew Rachel was afraid.””

“Yes.””

“You knew she found something.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Vanessa was connected.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The admission was worse than any lie.

Daniel stepped back.

“You let her into my life.””

“I didn’t know how far Vanessa would go.””

“But you knew she was dangerous.””

Robert didn’t answer.

Daniel’s voice broke.

“She was around my children.””

“I was watching.””

Daniel stared.

“You were watching?””

Robert nodded.

“I made sure nothing happened.””

Daniel looked at him in disbelief.

“My children were locked in a room.””

Robert looked away.

That was the moment Daniel understood.

Robert had not been protecting them.

He had been monitoring the situation.

Waiting.

Allowing things to continue because he thought he could control them.

Daniel felt sick.

“How long?””

Robert didn’t respond.

“How long did you know Noah was scared?””

Silence.

Daniel’s voice became louder.

“How long?””

Robert finally whispered:

“Months.””

The answer destroyed whatever was left.

Daniel turned away.

He pressed his hands against his face.

Months.

His son had been afraid for months.

His daughter had been crying for months.

And the people around him had been moving pieces like it was a game.

When Daniel looked back, his expression had changed.

“You’re going to tell me everything.””

Robert nodded slowly.

“I will.””

“No more secrets.””

“No more.””

Daniel stared.

“Start with Rachel.””

Robert took a deep breath.

“Rachel discovered that someone was using Carter Industries to hide illegal transactions.””

“Who?””

Robert looked toward the door.

As if checking that no one was listening.

Then he said:

“Your uncle.””

Daniel froze.

“My uncle?””

“Michael.””

The name felt familiar.

But distant.

Daniel hadn’t seen Michael Carter in years.

His father’s younger brother.

The charming one.

The funny one.

The family member everyone loved.

“He’s alive?””

Robert nodded.

“He disappeared after Rachel died.””

Daniel felt cold.

“Why?””

“Because he knew she was close to exposing him.””

Daniel stared.

“Are you saying Uncle Michael killed Rachel?””

Robert’s face became serious.

“I’m saying he had a reason.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Robert looked at him.

“It’s a warning.””

Daniel hated that.

He hated every answer that created more questions.

“What does Vanessa have to do with Michael?””

Robert hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Dad.””

Robert sighed.

“Vanessa was not working alone.””

“Who was she working with?””

Robert looked toward the hidden phone.

“Michael.””

Daniel went silent.

Everything connected.

The phone.

The custody plan.

The lies.

The manipulation.

But something still didn’t make sense.

“If Michael was behind this, why involve you?””

Robert’s expression changed.

“Because he needed someone close to you.””

Daniel stared.

“And that was you?””

Robert looked away.

“Yes.””

The answer was almost impossible to hear.

Daniel stepped back.

“My own father.””

“I was trying to get close enough to stop him.””

“You were trying?””

Robert’s voice became emotional.

“Daniel, you think I wanted any of this?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Robert continued.

“After Rachel died, I knew Michael wasn’t finished. I knew he would come after you eventually.””

“So you let me marry Vanessa?””

“No.””

Robert shook his head.

“I tried to control it.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t control people.””

A sudden noise interrupted them.

Both men turned.

A sound from upstairs.

A door closing.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Mark?””

No answer.

He moved quickly toward the hallway.

“Mark?””

Nothing.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

Daniel ran upstairs.

The bedroom door was open.

The room was empty.

But on the bed was something new.

A photograph.

Daniel picked it up.

His blood turned cold.

It was a picture of him.

Standing outside the hospital the night Rachel died.

On the back, someone had written:

*You should have listened to her.*

Daniel looked at Robert.

His father’s face had gone pale.

Because he recognized something Daniel didn’t.

“What?””

Robert stared at the handwriting.

Then whispered:

“He’s back.””

Daniel tightened his grip on the photo.

“Who?””

Robert looked terrified.

“Michael.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Then the phone in Daniel’s pocket rang.

Unknown number.

Daniel answered.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then a familiar voice whispered through the speaker.

A voice Daniel had not heard in years.

A voice that belonged to someone who was supposed to be gone.

“Hello, nephew.””

Daniel froze.

May you like

The voice continued.

“I think it’s time we talked about your wife.””
