Chapter 22: The Secret My Own Mother Buried
The message sat on my phone like a warning carved into stone.
*Ask your mother what happened.*
Four words.
Four words that made my entire body go cold.
Because the person who sent them knew something I didn’t.
Something about my past.
Something about my family.
Something that connected me to everything happening now.
Jayla watched my face carefully.
“Mom?””
I looked up.
She already knew.
Children know when something changes.
They notice the smallest things.
A pause.
A breath.
A look in your eyes.
“What happened?”” she asked.
I wanted to say nothing.
The old instinct came back immediately.
Protect her.
Keep her away from pain.
But then I remembered everything.
The lies.
The secrets.
The years stolen from her because people believed they knew what was best.
I couldn’t become another person who decided the truth was too dangerous for her.
So I told her.
“The message said we need to ask my mother what happened.””
Jayla’s expression changed.
“Your mother?””
I nodded.
“But your mom…”
“I know.””
She had passed away years ago.
Which meant the answer I needed was buried with her.
Or so I thought.
That night, I searched through everything she left behind.
Boxes I hadn’t opened in years.
Old photographs.
Letters.
Documents.
Things I had packed away because they were too painful to revisit.
My mother had always been a complicated person.
She loved me.
I knew that.
But she also had secrets.
Things she avoided talking about.
Questions she never answered.
I used to think it was just because she was private.
Now I wondered if she was protecting something.
Or someone.
Around midnight, I found an old journal.
I almost put it back.
It felt wrong.
Like opening a door that had been closed for a reason.
But I needed answers.
I opened it.
The first pages were normal.
Daily thoughts.
Family memories.
Small details.
Then I reached a section dated around the time Jayla was born.
My hands started shaking.
Because the first sentence said:
*I don’t know if I made the right choice.*
I kept reading.
My mother had written about fear.
About pressure.
About a promise she made to someone.
A promise involving me.
And Jayla.
The words became harder to read because my eyes filled with tears.
She knew.
My own mother knew something was wrong.
She knew there were people hiding things.
She knew there were questions about Jayla’s father.
But the worst part was this:
She knew I had been manipulated.
She knew someone was trying to separate me from the truth.
And she stayed silent.
I closed the journal.
I couldn’t breathe.
Jayla came into the room.
She must have heard me crying.
“Mom?””
I quickly wiped my face.
But she saw.
“What did you find?””
I looked at her.
“My mom knew.””
The words hurt even saying them.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“About everything?””
“I don’t know.””
That was the most painful part.
I didn’t know how much.
I didn’t know what she did.
I didn’t know what she chose.
Jayla sat beside me.
“Read it.””
I hesitated.
“It’s my mother’s private journal.””
She nodded.
“But it’s also about me.””
She was right.
So we read together.
Page after page.
And slowly, a new picture appeared.
My mother had not been the person who created the secret.
But she had been someone who helped maintain it.
She had believed she was protecting me.
Protecting Jayla.
Protecting our family.
But good intentions didn’t erase damage.
Then we found the page that changed everything.
The last entry before she stopped writing about the situation.
It said:
*Tomorrow I will tell her everything. She deserves to know the truth before someone else decides her life for her.*
I froze.
“Tomorrow?””
Jayla looked at me.
“What happened tomorrow?””
I turned the page.
The next pages were missing.
Someone had removed them.
My mother had planned to tell me.
But she never did.
Someone stopped her.
The question was:
Who?
The next morning, I contacted the person who had sent the message.
They answered immediately.
“I knew you would find it.””
My anger exploded.
“You knew about my mother?””
“Yes.””
“You knew she knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe she had nothing to do with this?””
A pause.
“I didn’t want to hurt you.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was again.
The same excuse.
“You all use the same words.””
“What?””
“You all say you’re protecting me.””
Silence.
“But every time someone says that, I lose another piece of my life.””
The person didn’t argue.
Because they knew I was right.
“Tell me the truth.””
“I can’t.””
“You can.””
“I’m afraid.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone is afraid.””
Then I heard something.
A sound.
Someone else in the background.
I froze.
“Who is there?””
The line went silent.
Then disconnected.
I looked at Jayla.
She had heard it too.
“You think someone was with them?””
I nodded.
And suddenly, I understood something terrifying.
Maybe the person who had been helping us wasn’t the person controlling everything.
Maybe they were also being controlled.
May you like
Maybe this entire time…
Everyone had been afraid of the same person.
