Chapter 12: The Necklace Hidden For Years

I barely slept that night.

Not because I was tired.

Because my mind refused to stop.

A necklace.

A picture.

My daughter’s face hidden inside something from years ago.

Why?

Who had it?

Why was it important?

And why had someone been desperate enough to erase memories connected to it?

The next morning, Jayla woke up before me.

I found her sitting at the kitchen table.

She was holding something.

A small box.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

She looked up.

“I found it in my room.””

I walked closer.

“Jayla…”

She opened it.

Inside was an old necklace.

I felt dizzy.

Because I recognized it.

Not from memory.

From a photo.

The same necklace appeared in an old picture I had almost forgotten.

“How did you get this?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I picked it up carefully.

My hands were trembling.

There was a tiny opening.

A place where a picture could be stored.

But it was empty.

The picture was gone.

Someone had removed it.

That discovery terrified me more than if it had still been there.

Because it proved something.

Someone had searched.

Someone had taken it.

Someone knew exactly what they were looking for.

Jayla watched my face.

“Mom?””

I looked at her.

“This wasn’t lost.””

“What?””

“This was hidden.””

She became quiet.

The room felt heavy.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A voice.

Older.

Shaking.

“I know you found the necklace.””

My grip tightened.

“Who is this?””

“That doesn’t matter.””

“It matters to me.””

A pause.

Then:

“You need to listen carefully.””

I stood.

“Why?””

“Because if you keep searching, you’re going to uncover something that will hurt people you love.””

My voice became cold.

“People I love?””

“Yes.””

“Like who?””

Silence.

Then:

“Your daughter.””

I felt anger explode inside me.

“Don’t use her to scare me.””

“I’m trying to warn you.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You’re trying to protect someone.””

The person didn’t deny it.

That told me everything.

“Who are you protecting?””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Jayla looked worried.

“What did they say?””

I looked at the necklace.

Then at my daughter.

“They know we found it.””

Her face went pale.

“How?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

Someone was watching.

Someone had always been watching.

That afternoon, we took the necklace to be examined.

The results came back with something unexpected.

There were traces of an old photograph still inside.

A tiny piece left behind.

Enough to prove there had been a picture.

Enough to prove someone removed it recently.

Not years ago.

Recently.

Someone had access to the necklace.

Someone knew it existed.

Someone had been searching for it while pretending they knew nothing.

Then came the final discovery.

The person who removed the photo left behind something else.

A small piece of paper.

Hidden inside the necklace.

A message.

Only four words.

*She was there too.*

I read it again.

And again.

My heart pounded.

Who was “she”?

Jayla?

Someone else?

I looked at my daughter.

She was staring at the message.

And then she whispered:

“I know that handwriting.””

My entire body froze.

“What?””

She touched the paper.

“I’ve seen it before.””

“Where?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“On a note in my room.””

“When?””

She shook her head.

“Before everything happened.””

The mystery had just become even darker.

Because now we knew something terrifying.

The person who had been hiding the truth wasn’t someone from the past.

They were still close.

Still watching.

May you like

Still involved.

And they had been inside my daughter’s room. :::
