Chapter 7: The Name Hidden in the Last Message
Nobody touched the laptop.
Not after what Roy had said.
The old machine sat on the workbench, its screen glowing in the darkness of the garage.
FROM EMILY.
Three simple words.
Three words that carried the weight of everything Mason had lost.
His mother.
His father.
His childhood.
His sense of safety.
And now…
possibly the truth.
Cole Mercer watched Roy carefully.
The man looked like someone who had just seen a ghost.
Not a person afraid of getting caught.
A person afraid of what would happen after the truth came out.
Cole had spent enough time around criminals to know the difference.
Guilt looked one way.
Fear looked another.
Roy had both.
Mason stood frozen beside the table.
His eyes never left the screen.
“Why are you scared?””
His voice was quiet.
Roy didn’t answer.
Mason took a step forward.
“You know what’s on there.””
Roy looked at him.
For a second, Cole thought Roy might finally tell the truth.
But then the old fear returned.
The walls went back up.
“I know enough.””
Mason’s expression changed.
“Enough to steal from me?””
Roy looked away.
“Enough to know you’re in danger.””
Cole stepped between them.
“That excuse is getting old.””
Roy looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
Cole’s voice was cold.
“Then explain.””
Roy clenched his jaw.
“I can’t.””
Mason stared.
“You can’t?””
Roy shook his head.
“No.””
The answer hurt more than a lie.
Because Mason understood.
Roy wasn’t saying he didn’t know.
He was saying he knew and was too afraid to admit it.
Cole looked at the laptop.
Then at Mason.
“Open it.””
Everyone reacted.
Roy immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
This time, Cole didn’t even look at him.
“That tells me everything.””
Roy stopped.
The Road Wolves moved closer.
Not threatening.
Just making sure everyone understood.
Mason slowly reached toward the mouse.
His hand shook.
Cole placed his hand on the table.
“You don’t have to do this.””
Mason looked at him.
“Yes, I do.””
A pause.
“I spent almost a year not knowing anything.””
His voice cracked.
“I need to know.””
Cole nodded.
He understood.
Some wounds never close because people are waiting for answers.
Mason clicked.
The file opened.
At first, there was only a black screen.
Then Emily appeared.
But this time…
she looked different.
Not like the woman in the previous videos.
Not smiling.
Not trying to comfort anyone.
She looked scared.
The camera was positioned somewhere hidden.
Like she had recorded it quickly.
Like she didn’t know how much time she had.
“Mason.””
The boy immediately covered his mouth.
“Mom…”
Emily looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, then I’m gone.””
The words were painful.
But everyone stayed silent.
“I’m sorry.””
She paused.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
Mason’s eyes filled.
“I wanted to protect you from all of this.””
Emily took a breath.
“But I failed.””
Cole frowned.
The word bothered him.
Failed.
A mother who prepared hidden messages.
A mother who protected evidence.
A mother who tried to save her son.
She didn’t sound like someone who failed.
She sounded like someone who ran out of time.
Emily continued.
“There is something I never told you.””
Mason leaned closer.
“Something about the people around us.””
The screen flickered.
“My whole life, I believed I knew who I could trust.””
She looked down.
“I was wrong.””
Roy closed his eyes.
Cole noticed.
Emily continued.
“Your father was not the only person who discovered the truth.””
A pause.
“I did too.””
Mason looked confused.
“The truth about what?””
Emily answered:
“The truth about why people like Roy wanted control of our lives.””
The garage became silent.
Emily picked up a folder.
“The money was never the real target.””
Cole nodded slightly.
Daniel had said the same thing.
“It was what the money was connected to.””
Emily looked at the camera.
“Years ago, your grandfather created a private trust.””
Mason frowned.
“My grandfather?””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“He built a company that helped families recover stolen property.””
Cole listened carefully.
A pattern was forming.
“Your grandfather discovered that certain people were using legal systems to take homes, businesses, and savings from families who couldn’t fight back.””
Emily looked away.
“He collected evidence.””
A pause.
“Lots of evidence.””
The screen showed a stack of documents.
“He created a backup system.””
Mason whispered:
“The toolbox.””
Emily nodded.
“The toolbox was one part.””
Cole looked surprised.
“One part?””
Emily continued.
“There are three pieces.””
Everyone looked at the screen.
“The red toolbox.””
A pause.
“The account records.””
Another pause.
“And the witness.””
Cole frowned.
“The witness?””
Emily nodded.
“Someone who saw everything.””
The screen flickered.
“Someone who knows the person responsible.””
Mason looked confused.
“Who?””
Emily became quiet.
Then she said:
“That is why I recorded this.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“Because the person who betrayed us is not a stranger.””
Everyone waited.
Emily continued.
“It is someone you love.””
Mason’s face changed.
Cole looked at Roy.
But Roy was already staring at the floor.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Like he already knew.
Emily continued.
“I don’t want you to hate them.””
Mason shook his head.
“How can I not?””
His voice broke.
The video continued.
“Because sometimes people do terrible things because they are afraid.””
Cole looked at Roy.
The words clearly reached him.
Emily took a breath.
“But fear does not erase responsibility.””
The sentence stayed in the room.
Then Emily looked at the camera again.
“Mason, if you found the toolbox, you already know Roy lied to you.””
Roy looked down.
“But I need you to understand something.””
A pause.
“Roy did not kill me.””
Everyone reacted.
Mason looked shocked.
Cole’s eyes narrowed.
Emily continued.
“He was involved.””
Roy looked up.
“But he was not the person who caused the accident.””
The room changed.
Because everyone had assumed.
Roy was the villain.
The easy answer.
The person responsible.
But Emily was saying there was someone else.
Someone bigger.
Someone hidden.
Emily continued.
“The person who did this is someone who was close to your father.””
Mason whispered:
“Who?””
The video paused.
Then Emily said:
“Someone who helped us.””
Cole felt a chill.
Helped them.
Someone trusted.
Someone close.
The screen flickered again.
Then Emily said something nobody expected.
“Mason, if Cole Mercer is there…”
Cole froze.
Emily looked into the camera.
“Listen to him.””
The boy looked at Cole.
Emily continued.
“Your father trusted him because Cole understands something most people forget.””
A pause.
“Doing the right thing does not always mean winning.””
Cole looked away.
He wasn’t comfortable hearing that.
Emily continued.
“It means refusing to become the people you’re fighting.””
The words stayed with him.
Then she looked down.
“Mason, there is one final thing.””
The boy leaned closer.
“The person who betrayed us knows about this video.””
A pause.
“They know about the toolbox.””
Another pause.
“And they know about Cole.””
Everyone looked confused.
Cole frowned.
“Me?””
Emily nodded.
“If Cole found you, then they will find you too.””
The video suddenly distorted.
Static filled the screen.
Emily’s face appeared one final time.
“Mason…”
Her voice became urgent.
“Don’t trust the person who comes looking for you.””
The screen glitched.
“Even if they say they’re family.””
Then the video ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The message was over.
But the questions had multiplied.
Mason slowly stood.
His face was empty.
Too empty.
Cole knew that expression.
It was the look people had when too much happened too quickly.
The mind couldn’t process it.
So it shut down.
“Family.””
Mason whispered the word.
Cole looked at him.
“What?””
Mason turned.
“There’s only one person who keeps saying they’re family.””
Everyone became still.
Cole’s eyes moved toward Roy.
Roy looked away.
Mason stepped closer.
“You told people you were my uncle.””
Roy said nothing.
“You told everyone you were taking care of me.””
Silence.
“You weren’t.””
Roy closed his eyes.
“Mason…”
“No.””
The boy’s voice became stronger.
“You lied.””
Roy looked at him.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Mason laughed bitterly.
“By stealing from me?””
Roy had no answer.
Then suddenly—
The garage door shook.
Everyone turned.
A loud impact.
Then another.
Someone was outside.
Jake moved toward the entrance.
“Company.””
Cole raised a hand.
“Wait.””
The door shook again.
Then a voice came through.
“Mason Parker.””
Everyone froze.
Because the voice was familiar.
Not Roy.
Not Victoria.
Someone else.
Someone who sounded calm.
Someone who sounded like they knew Mason.
“I know you’re in there.””
Mason looked at Cole.
His face had gone pale.
“Who is it?””
Nobody answered.
Then the voice spoke again.
“Mason…”
A pause.
“It’s your grandfather.””
The garage became silent.
Impossible.
Mason’s grandfather had been dead for years.
At least…
that was what he had always been told.
Cole looked at the red toolbox.
At the laptop.
At the terrified expression on Roy’s face.
And he realized something.
The truth had not been buried.
It had been waiting.
May you like
And now…
it had come looking for Mason.
