Chapter 6: The Man Who Vanished Twice

The garage had never felt so quiet.

Not even after Victoria Shaw left.

Not even after the confrontation.

Not even after Mason learned that his entire life had been built on secrets.

The silence now was different.

This wasn’t fear.

It was anticipation.

Everyone in the room was staring at the laptop screen.

DANIEL PARKER — FINAL MESSAGE

The words seemed impossible.

Daniel Parker.

Mason’s father.

A man who had disappeared years ago.

A man Mason had believed was gone forever.

A man whose name had suddenly appeared everywhere.

In his mother’s video.

In Victoria’s warnings.

And now…

on a file waiting for Cole Mercer.

Mason stood beside the table.

His face was pale.

“Is he alive?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Cole looked at the screen.

He had spent his life riding into uncertain situations.

Broken highways.

Dangerous towns.

Places where people lied and where truth was usually buried under layers of fear.

But this felt different.

This wasn’t just another mystery.

This was a child’s entire world hanging on a few seconds of video.

Cole looked at Mason.

“You ready?””

The boy swallowed.

“No.””

Cole nodded.

“Me neither.””

That honesty seemed to help.

Mason sat down.

Cole moved beside him.

The Road Wolves gathered behind them.

The file opened.

For a moment, there was only darkness.

Then a man appeared.

Older than Mason’s childhood memories.

Tired.

Exhausted.

But alive.

Mason stopped breathing.

Because even after all these years…

he knew.

A son always knows.

“Dad…”

The word barely escaped his mouth.

On the screen, Daniel Parker looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this, then something went wrong.””

His voice was lower than expected.

Older.

Like life had taken pieces of him away.

“I don’t know who found this file.””

He paused.

“But if Mason is watching…”

Daniel looked away for a second.

Like he was trying to control his emotions.

“Mason, I need you to know something.””

The boy covered his mouth.

“I never left you because I wanted to.””

Cole looked at him.

The pain on Mason’s face was impossible to hide.

Daniel continued.

“I know you probably hate me.””

A tear rolled down Mason’s cheek.

“I know you probably think I chose to disappear.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn’t.””

The garage stayed silent.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

The words echoed.

Cole leaned closer.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother was right about Roy.””

Cole glanced at Roy.

The man stood near the wall.

Silent.

Watching.

“He was never just stealing money.””

Daniel’s face became serious.

“He was working for people who specialize in making problems disappear.””

Mason looked confused.

“What people?””

Daniel answered before anyone could ask.

“The Shaw organization.””

Everyone froze.

Cole immediately thought of Victoria.

Daniel continued.

“They operate through businesses, fake investments, legal contracts, and people who are willing to do whatever they’re told.””

Cole’s expression hardened.

That explained everything.

The money.

The house.

The lies.

The missing evidence.

Daniel wasn’t talking about a simple thief.

He was talking about a system.

A network.

A machine.

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

“Mason, if Victoria Shaw finds this file, she will come for you.””

Mason looked at the screen.

“But she said she was protecting me.””

Cole watched him carefully.

Daniel continued.

“Do not believe her.””

The boy’s face fell.

Cole didn’t say anything.

He knew what Mason was feeling.

The worst part about betrayal wasn’t learning someone lied.

It was realizing you wanted them to be telling the truth.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“There is one thing you need to understand.””

The screen flickered.

“My disappearance was planned.””

Everyone reacted.

Mason whispered:

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“I knew they were watching me.””

He looked down.

“I knew I couldn’t beat them alone.””

Cole frowned.

That was not what he expected.

Daniel wasn’t saying he ran.

He was saying he sacrificed something.

“I made a deal.””

The room went silent.

“A deal with someone who could protect Mason.””

Cole looked at the screen.

“Who?””

Daniel continued.

“But the deal required me to disappear completely.””

Mason shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“I’m sorry.””

The boy looked down.

“I’m so sorry, son.””

The word broke him.

Son.

A word Mason probably waited years to hear.

“I watched you from a distance.””

Mason looked up.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“I saw your first day of school.””

Mason froze.

“I saw you ride your bike without training wheels.””

The boy’s eyes widened.

“I saw your tenth birthday.””

Mason started crying.

“Then why didn’t you come?””

Nobody in the room moved.

Daniel answered.

“Because every time I wanted to…”

He stopped.

“Someone was watching.””

The garage felt colder.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“If they knew I was still alive, they would come after you.””

Mason whispered:

“So you just stayed away?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I thought losing me was better than losing you.””

The screen went quiet for a moment.

Then Daniel continued.

“But I made one mistake.””

Cole leaned forward.

“What?””

Daniel looked directly at the camera.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

A pause.

“Roy wasn’t supposed to hurt Mason.””

Everyone turned toward Roy.

Roy looked away.

Daniel continued.

“He was supposed to watch over him.””

Mason looked shocked.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice became heavier.

“Roy was supposed to make sure Mason had food, shelter, and protection until I could return.””

Cole looked at Roy.

The man looked ashamed.

Not innocent.

But ashamed.

Daniel continued.

“But Roy became afraid.””

Roy finally spoke.

“He doesn’t know what happened.””

Everyone looked at him.

Cole’s voice was cold.

“Then explain.””

Roy stayed silent.

Daniel’s video continued.

“Roy discovered the truth about the money.””

Daniel looked angry.

“He realized Mason’s inheritance was valuable.””

Mason looked at Roy.

“You took it.””

Roy looked down.

“I needed it.””

The answer shocked everyone.

Mason stared.

“You needed it?””

Roy’s voice became quieter.

“You don’t know what they would have done to me.””

Cole stepped forward.

“But you chose to take from a child.””

Roy didn’t answer.

Because there was no defense.

Daniel continued.

“Roy was never the mastermind.””

The words surprised everyone.

Cole looked at the screen.

“He was scared.””

Daniel paused.

“But scared people can still hurt others.””

Roy closed his eyes.

The truth hurt because it was accurate.

Daniel continued.

“Mason, the money is not the only thing your mother left you.””

The boy looked at the screen.

“There is another account.””

Cole frowned.

Another account?

Daniel nodded.

“The insurance money was only part of it.””

Mason looked confused.

“How much?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“More than two million dollars.””

Nobody spoke.

The number changed the room instantly.

Even the Road Wolves reacted.

Two million dollars.

A fortune.

A reason people would kill.

Daniel continued.

“But the money is not what they want.””

Cole narrowed his eyes.

“Then what?””

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“The evidence.””

The answer landed heavily.

“They don’t care about the money.””

A pause.

“They care about what the money proves.””

The video glitched.

Then Daniel said something unexpected.

“Mason, there is someone you need to find.””

Cole waited.

Daniel continued.

“Someone who knew your mother before she died.””

The screen flickered.

“Someone who knows where I am.””

Mason leaned closer.

“Who?””

Daniel looked down.

Then said:

“Cole Mercer.””

Everyone froze.

Cole felt the entire room turn toward him.

Daniel continued.

“You don’t know this man yet.””

A strange feeling moved through Cole.

“By the time you find this message, you probably met him.””

Daniel gave a small smile.

“He has a habit of helping people.””

Mason looked at Cole.

The biker stayed silent.

Daniel continued.

“Cole, if you are watching this…”

His expression became serious.

“I need you to do something I never had the chance to do.””

Cole stared.

“Protect my son.””

The words hit differently.

Because Daniel wasn’t asking.

He was trusting.

The video continued.

“There is one more thing.””

Daniel looked nervous for the first time.

“One thing even Emily didn’t know.””

Mason froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“Your mother’s accident was not an accident.””

The room became completely still.

“We were betrayed by someone close to us.””

Cole felt his stomach tighten.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone inside.

Daniel continued.

“And that person knows exactly where the final evidence is hidden.””

The screen flickered violently.

Daniel’s face distorted.

Then, just before the video ended, he said one final sentence.

“The person who betrayed us…”

A pause.

“…is someone Mason has known his entire life.””

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The words stayed hanging in the air.

Someone Mason had known his entire life.

Mason slowly turned around.

His eyes moved across the room.

Then stopped.

Not on Roy.

Not on Victoria.

Not on anyone outside.

On the people closest to him.

Cole looked at the boy.

And he understood.

The danger was not just outside the garage.

It had been near Mason all along.

Then the laptop made a sound.

A notification.

Another file appeared.

No name.

No title.

Just a message.

FROM EMILY.

Mason stared.

His mother’s final message.

But before he could click it…

Roy whispered:

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Because Roy looked terrified.

More terrified than before.

Cole’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Roy looked at the screen.

Then at Mason.

And finally said:

“Because if you open that file…”

May you like

His voice shook.

“You’ll find out who really killed your mother.””
