Chapter 13: The Betrayal Hidden Behind a Familiar Face

For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand the words.

Not because Claire’s voice was unclear.

Because my mind refused to accept them.

Victor took Noah.

Victor.

The man who had held Daniel’s secrets.

The man who had stood at my door looking broken.

The man who claimed he loved Daniel like a brother.

The man who told me he wanted to protect me.

My brain searched for another explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A mistake.

Anything.

“Claire…”

My voice barely worked.

“Say that again.””

On the other end of the phone, I heard her crying.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“No, don’t say you’re sorry. Tell me where my son is.””

“I don’t know.””

The answer made anger explode inside me.

“You called me to tell me Victor took him, but you don’t know where he is?””

“I know where he was supposed to take him.””

My heart pounded.

“Where?””

“Emily…”

“Where?””

She went silent.

Then whispered:

“The old Vale warehouse.””

I froze.

The old warehouse.

A place I had never heard of.

But Daniel had.

I remembered the files.

The financial records.

The old business documents.

The name Vale appeared everywhere.

“What warehouse?””

“My father-in-law’s old property.””

“Richard Cross owned it?””

“No.””

Claire swallowed.

“Your husband’s father did.””

Michael.

Everything kept coming back to Michael.

The man who was dead.

The man who was alive.

The man who had started all of this.

“Why would Victor take Noah there?””

Claire’s breathing became uneven.

“Because he thinks he’s protecting him.””

I almost laughed.

“Protecting him?””

My voice cracked.

“He kidnapped my son.””

“I know.””

“No, Claire. You don’t know.””

My tears finally came.

“You don’t know what it feels like to have your child taken away.””

Silence.

Then Claire whispered:

“You’re right.””

Something in her voice changed.

Not fear.

Guilt.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“Then tell me now.””

A pause.

“Victor isn’t working for Richard.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“He’s trying to stop him.””

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

She sounded desperate.

“But Victor believes Noah is the last piece.””

“The last piece of what?””

“The evidence Daniel left behind.””

I closed my eyes.

Everyone wanted the evidence.

Everyone wanted Daniel’s phone.

Everyone wanted whatever he had discovered.

But nobody cared about what it had cost him.

“Claire, why should I believe you?””

“You shouldn’t.””

The answer surprised me.

“You shouldn’t believe anyone right now.””

That was the most honest thing anyone had said to me.

She continued.

“But I need you to know something.””

“What?””

“Victor didn’t want Daniel dead.””

I looked down.

“Then why did Daniel warn me about him?””

“Because Daniel didn’t know the whole story.””

I hated those words.

The whole story.

Always another layer.

Always another secret.

“Claire.””

“Yes?””

“If Victor hurts Noah…”

“He won’t.””

The certainty in her voice surprised me.

“How do you know?””

“Because he loves children.””

I almost snapped.

“That’s not enough.””

“No.””

She paused.

“But because I know why he did it.””

I waited.

“Victor’s father threatened him.””

Richard.

My stomach tightened.

“What did Richard threaten?””

Claire’s voice became quiet.

“Me.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“Because Victor was trying to help Daniel.””

The pieces started moving.

Victor helping Daniel.

Richard threatening Victor.

Noah being taken.

But it still didn’t make sense.

“Claire, why would Victor take Noah instead of telling me?””

“Because he thinks someone else is watching you.””

My hand tightened.

“Someone inside the family.””

Claire went silent.

That silence told me everything.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Claire.””

“I swear.””

Her voice broke.

“I only know that Victor found something in Daniel’s files.””

“What?””

“A message.””

“From who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then what did it say?””

She hesitated.

Finally:

“Protect Noah from the person who knows your home better than anyone.””

The sentence hit me.

Someone who knows your home better than anyone.

My mind immediately went through names.

Margaret.

Victor.

Claire.

But then another thought came.

Someone who had been inside our house.

Someone who knew our routines.

Someone who knew Daniel’s habits.

Someone who knew where everything was.

I remembered the photograph taken inside my kitchen.

The picture of Daniel.

The picture from before he died.

Someone had been close.

Very close.

“Claire.””

“Yes?””

“Did Victor ever enter my house after Daniel died?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“The night after the funeral.””

I stood.

“What?””

“He said he needed to look for something Daniel hid.””

“Did he find it?””

“I don’t know.””

The room spun.

Because suddenly I remembered.

The night after the funeral.

The night I was too exhausted to think.

The night Noah cried himself to sleep.

The night I let everyone come in and out because I was broken.

Victor had been in my house.

And I hadn’t questioned it.

“Emily…”

Claire’s voice pulled me back.

“You need to go to the warehouse.””

I looked at the address Richard had sent me.

Then at the message from Sarah.

Something was wrong.

Everyone was telling me different versions of the truth.

But they were all pointing toward the same place.

The warehouse.

“I’m going.””

“Emily, wait.””

“No.””

I grabbed my coat.

“I’m getting my son.””

“Don’t go alone.””

I paused.

Because that was exactly what everyone kept saying.

Don’t go alone.

Don’t trust.

Don’t confront.

But nobody was coming to save me.

Not this time.

“I’ll be careful.””

I hung up.

Then I looked at Daniel’s phone.

The phone Richard wanted.

The phone Victor protected.

The phone that had started everything.

I opened the recording folder.

There was one file I had never opened.

A hidden file.

The title was simple.

“Final.””

My breath caught.

I pressed play.

At first, there was only silence.

Then Daniel’s voice.

Quiet.

Tired.

But clear.

“If you’re hearing this…”

I closed my eyes.

“It means things went worse than I expected.””

My heart broke.

Daniel.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

A pause.

“Emily, if you’re the one hearing this, I’m sorry.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“Not because I didn’t trust you.””

A shaky breath.

“Because I trusted you more than anyone.””

I sat down.

“I knew you would fight for the truth.””

Another pause.

“But I also knew you would fight alone.””

His voice broke slightly.

“That’s what scared me.””

I covered my mouth.

Daniel continued.

“There is someone close to us who has been helping Richard.””

My heart stopped.

Someone close.

“I don’t know exactly who.””

A pause.

“But I know one thing.””

My breathing became shallow.

“They are not doing it because they hate us.””

I frowned.

“They are doing it because they believe they have no choice.””

The recording continued.

“If something happens to me, don’t look for the person who benefits.””

I listened carefully.

“Look for the person who is afraid.””

The recording ended.

I stared at the phone.

The person who is afraid.

Not the person who gains.

The person who fears.

My mind went back.

Margaret’s fear.

Victor’s fear.

Claire’s fear.

Everyone was afraid.

But one person’s fear had always stood out.

Someone who had been desperate to control everything.

Someone who had been desperate to keep Daniel from discovering the truth.

Someone who had lied for twenty years.

Margaret.

But Daniel had said something else.

They don’t hate us.

They believe they have no choice.

I looked at the clock.

I had spent too much time trying to decide who was guilty.

I needed to find Noah.

I drove to the warehouse.

The old building stood at the edge of town.

Abandoned.

Dark.

The kind of place where secrets could survive.

I parked far away.

I didn’t want anyone watching me arrive.

I took Daniel’s phone.

Nothing else.

No weapons.

No backup.

Just the one thing everyone wanted.

The truth.

The warehouse door was slightly open.

My heart raced.

I stepped inside.

“Victor?””

My voice echoed.

Nothing.

I walked farther.

“Victor!””

Then I heard something.

A voice.

A child’s voice.

“Mom?””

I froze.

“Noah!””

I ran.

And there he was.

Sitting on an old chair.

Safe.

Untouched.

But beside him stood Victor.

My anger came back instantly.

I rushed forward.

“Noah!””

He ran into my arms.

I held him.

I checked his face.

His hands.

Everything.

“Are you okay?””

He nodded.

“I’m okay.””

I looked at Victor.

“What did you do?””

His face was full of pain.

“I’m sorry.””

I almost screamed.

“Don’t.””

“Emily—”

“You took my son.””

“I know.””

“Do you have any idea what you did to me?””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to protect people by destroying them.””

Victor looked down.

“I wasn’t protecting myself.””

“Then who?””

He looked at Noah.

“Daniel.””

The answer stopped me.

“What?””

Victor reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small device.

A recorder.

“Daniel gave this to me.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“The night before he died.””

“Why?””

Victor looked at me.

“Because he knew if he failed…”

A pause.

“He needed Noah to hear the truth one day.””

I stared.

“What truth?””

Victor looked toward the entrance.

And then I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone walking into the warehouse.

Someone who wasn’t surprised to see us.

Someone who knew we would be there.

I turned.

And my blood ran cold.

Because the person standing in the doorway was the last person I expected.

The person Daniel had trusted.

The person who had cried at his funeral.

The person who had called me hours ago.

Claire.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing behind her was Richard Cross.

And Claire’s face was not afraid.

It was empty.

Like someone who had finally stopped pretending.

Victor whispered:

“No…”

Claire looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

My stomach dropped.

Because Daniel had been right.

The person closest to us had been helping Richard all along.

May you like

And it wasn’t Victor.

It was Claire.
